Dojo update: Masterpieces

Do not adjust your monitor. This is still the Nintendo Wii Fanboy Dojo update you know and love, even if today's dojo announcement falls squarely in the region of "Dubya. Tee. Eff."
Basically, Brawl will be shipping to stores with several "Masterpieces," disc-based trial versions of Virtual Console games. There's nothing too obscure in the selection revealed so far (Super Mario Bros., Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, Super Metroid, and Star Fox 64), but Sakurai has promised that more titles are on the way. Obviously, because they're trial versions, you can only play them for a limited time (though that may not deter some people).
You can view this feature in two ways, we suppose. Some will see it as a fitting tribute to the greatest videogame company of all time. Others might decipher this as a cynical piece of free advertising for the Virtual Console. As for us, we're just happy that new or younger players will be getting an insight into Nintendo's outstanding body of work. Just don't look at the games Japan is getting. That would make you angry.

Great idea actually. How long have we been B&M
that we need a playable preview for VC games. Now if only they made this a feature that was built in to the shop channel, allowing you to try whatever game you please, I would be super happy.

Watch the video at:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29966.html
Pause the video 12 seconds into it. Is that the official roster for the game?!
Aero @ Jan 25th 2008 12:37PM
That has to be fake. Just look at Zelda's character selection box, it was already proven that her box has her and Sheik shown. So that has to be fake.
TWOO DEE @ Jan 25th 2008 1:12PM
44 characters? i don't have any audio output here at work, but that would be simply amazing!
ChaOS @ Jan 25th 2008 1:22PM
it looks like batman in the bottom middle...
no way man...
hvnlysoldr @ Jan 25th 2008 10:00PM
That was faked. They put it in the video questioning what the complete roster really is. That guy who looks like Batman is Black Shadow of F-Zero.

I want Earthbound!
So.. I guess this is the end.
What will I look forward to looking up every day now?
Also, I kind of wish this game came out in Japan and America on the same day..
hvnlysoldr @ Jan 25th 2008 2:03PM
The Japanese page shows that Fire Emblem 1 that stars Marth and Mother 2 aka Earthbound and Ness will be Masterpieces.
MountainLionLink @ Jan 25th 2008 12:18PM
Screw this trial versions of games marketing idea. Just give me the full version of Mother 02 aka Earthbound. Then I'll be happy.
Nate @ Jan 25th 2008 12:33PM
I'm cool with this, though I have to say I've played and beaten most of the games that are listed there.
TheOverlord#2 @ Jan 27th 2008 10:10PM
So, i guess Nintendo is confirming Ness...(Lucas wasn't in MOTHER2...right?)
Makes me want Earthbound so much more...
Ty @ Jan 25th 2008 1:02PM
The roster is fake. GT just placed it there for laughs before their feature video...
As for this feature, I feel it's more inclined to "this-generation's" players who decided to get the Wii just for Brawl. When they notice this feature, they may want to try out these classics before they're convinced to purchase them off the Wii shop...
Sonic_13 @ Jan 25th 2008 1:08PM
I think this is an awesome idea. It is always great to know the history of the numerous characters and elements that make Super Smash Bros.
Interestingly, IGN lists Earthbound as one of the playable demos! Hopefully that means Earthbound will be released on the VC soon...

At first, I thought, "Finally!" After the VC SMS games announcement this morning I thought Now, though, I'm kind of baffled as to why they chose to do this only through Brawl. Additionally, I'm disappointed that a trial system isn't being implemented into the Shop Channel permanently. At least some demos are better than none.

My guess is that this is a dry test of a possible VC demo system, to see how people react to the idea
Or this is just the icing on the cake, a last-minute feature thrown into the biggest game of the Wii's life (ok, Wii Sports is bigger, but they didn't know that going in)
glass soldiers @ Jan 25th 2008 1:25PM
will someone tell sakurai to stop making this so good, this might be the only game i need until smash bros. 4 (5 years later....)
gevenstaines @ Jan 25th 2008 2:12PM
i think this is a great idea. i won't be using though, as i have emulators.
is gametrailers a reliable, respected source for information? why would they doctor a fake roster "just for laughs"? if they were going for laughs they could've put in master chief at least...
Evangelist Pinto @ Jan 25th 2008 7:22PM
I wonder if you can hack ssbb to have infinite amount of playtime.....but I wouldnt hack though. Just wondering...
raindog @ Jan 26th 2008 2:18AM
I don't know if the time limit will really encourage people to play the games. The casual gamers who haven't played Mario and Zelda to death already don't mind time limits; I think the decision to include a time limit as a gameplay feature in Pac-Man CE for the 360 demonstrates that pretty well.
Chase @ Jan 26th 2008 3:04AM
This game has boobs. Huge boobs.
