Metareview: No More Heroes
We've been eagerly anticipating the release of No More Heroes for a long time. There aren't too many titles that offer Wii gamers a mature experience, and we're looking for more diversity in our libraries. With No More Heroes, Suda 51 attempts to sate our cravings, while at the same time making the game ridiculous and quirky. But, is it any good?
You can release the breath that you've been holding; it looks like No More Heroes lives up to all the hype (or at least, most of it).
Need some proof? See for yourselves:
You can release the breath that you've been holding; it looks like No More Heroes lives up to all the hype (or at least, most of it).
Need some proof? See for yourselves:
- IGN (78/100) thinks that despite the game's shortcomings, No More Heroes is worth getting: "No More Heroes isn't the most polished game out there, and it certainly has its fair share of quirks all around, but it deserves to keep its place in the libraries of the more serious Wii gamers just the same. Suda 51 promised a violent, stylistic spectacle, and he delivered."
- GamePro (90/100) raves over the game's combat and its use of the lightsaber: "For every gamer who's felt disappointed by tacked-on motion controls, I present the game that has completely captured the essence of the Force. No More Heroes? Try No More Competition."
- NGamer (94/100) says that the playing No More Heroes is a unique experience: "The mishmash of visual styles, music and the world's most flamboyant dialogue has no comparison to anything else; it's impossible to put the game in a box, except to say that it is unquestionably, undeniably, unequivocally No More Heroes, and you have never played anything like this before."

I was surprised that you didn't post Gamestop's unexpected 9.0 review. Now if only I could find a damn copy.
Matt @ Jan 24th 2008 10:42AM
I'm glad the reviews are good. Lets just hope this won't be another Zack and Wiki incident.
Now if I could only beat shinobu.
ramuji @ Jan 24th 2008 4:55PM
Shinobu kicked my ass badly. The only other assassin that gave me as much trouble was Holly. And that was all on the easiest setting. I'm looking forward to playing through again on the hardest setting.
xeleion @ Jan 25th 2008 12:08AM
Haha, to beat Shinobu... Lock on to her and dodge as soon as she attacks. Then proceed to beat her ass without mercy, hoping you can make her dizzy and do the suplex.
I just beat her on my 3rd try.

I gotta say that recently my agreement of IGNs reviews have fallen way off. I used to be dead on with what they would review in a game, now the very things they're pointing out as flaws I wont even notice, or care for. They seem to be VERY overcritical of Wii offerings. The good ones. That EVERYONE else scores higher.
Jonathan Tran @ Jan 24th 2008 11:08AM
IMO you should have posted the 3 worst scores, just like you did for Endless Ocean, lol.
Orion @ Jan 24th 2008 11:30AM
haha, we knew that joke was coming :)
im shocked he didnt put the 100 score from g4 and use the "but it's from a good source' excuse. ::rolls eyes::

I'm sure you were probably being facetious so that you could get in your little jab at us ;), but just so you know, the IGN "78" we put in there is the lowest score listed so far on Metacritic.
vidGuy @ Jan 24th 2008 11:16AM
I've now decided to get this game, if only I could find it.
vidGuy @ Jan 24th 2008 2:38PM
I had only slight problems finding mine. My local Gamestop, Target, and Best Buy are all in the same block. I hit up Target and Gamestop, no copies at either. Best Buy had at least 20. Awesome.
Now, if only I didn't have four hours of reading to get done today...
Cheese Muffin @ Jan 24th 2008 11:21AM
My waller appears to be telling me, No More Money.
I weep.
John Rios @ Jan 24th 2008 11:22AM
I bought the game (and did my civic duty) last night and popped it in, intending to check it out for a half hour or so and get back to it this weekend. I ended up playing the sucker for about 4 hours and simply said, the game ROCKS. The combat is so much fun and, it in the short time I played it, there was innovation around every corner. I like everything about it... except the oddly lifeless free-roam city they give you to explore. A minor gripe for a game that seems to be filled with a TON of fun. Seriously, you've gotta try this! Well played Suda.
ejamer @ Jan 24th 2008 11:37AM
Hmm... I don't mind IGN's review as long as you read the text. They just sounded very disappointed with the city environment where you travel from mission to mission. Early reports about the game had me looking for a GTA-level of coolness, and No More Heroes would've been a huge disappointment for me as well if that expectation hadn't been adjusted.
That said, action sequences are what the game is all about and they are wild. No More Heroes definitely has more than it's fair share of style.
:)
(By the way, nice selection of quotes for the article. Picking one review from the top, one from the middle, and one from the bottom gives a good range of what different reviewers are saying without making the numbers appear skewed. If I'm going to be critical when it's done poorly, I should also be complimentary when it's done right.)
:thumbs up:

I LOVE they way they incorporate the cell phone calls. What an incredible way to draw a connection between the game and its controls.
If I didnt know better, I could swear that Quentin Tarantino wrote this game.
Rocketboy @ Jan 24th 2008 2:25PM
Well, if QT did write it, it would suck. So that's one big difference.
(BTW: I loved Reservoir Dogs.)
xeleion @ Jan 25th 2008 12:18AM
I thought the same thing, man. Good thing I love Tarantino...
Justin @ Jan 24th 2008 11:54AM
Xplay gave his game their first 5 out of 5 for the year and said it hands down the best game out right now.
MountainLionLink @ Jan 24th 2008 12:25PM
I find it funny that so many individuals claim to not have found the game at any Gamestop. When I went yesterday to purchase One Piece Unlimited Adventure at a local KCMO gamestop, I asked the employees about the game. Since a lot of other stores were said to not have any copies. This is what they told me:
[note: copies mean original amount received by the store]
No More Heroes - 06 copies, no purchases, pre-orders
Endless Ocean - 04 copies, 01 purchase, no pre-orders
One Piece Unlimited Adventure - 03 copies, 03 purchases, no pre-orders
NeverSage @ Jan 24th 2008 12:38PM
This is game is pretty awesome. I found mine at Best Buy and played for an hour or so last night. Good stuff!
Though it's true what people are saying about the city, it's pretty pointless.
Perverted @ Jan 24th 2008 1:02PM
*cries* I want this game! Especially in it's non-censored form!
Lucky Yanks ¬_¬
Mr Khan @ Jan 24th 2008 2:21PM
This game's sole flaw is the city. The City looks like it was ripped out of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 in terms of its graphics, the city is lifeless and filled with irritating invisible walls
The game completely makes up for it by the fact that it is Otaku, Punk Rock, and Tarantino-esque all in one. Plus the combat, the combat is just a barrage of light and sound, a throwback to the fighting games of yore
And i love the dialogue
"Ok, if i get to number one, will you do it with me?"
Ghaleon @ Jan 24th 2008 3:14PM
Another great Wii game -- definitely something different + worth the price of admission. Really fun. It does have some technical issues, but nothing that gets in the way of how fun & sweet the game is.
I don't remember many huge-selling DS games when it was only a year old -- hopefully all these sweet Wii games that the mainstream doesn't pick up on will still make a profit and encourage more creativity for the system devs.
gihun @ Jan 25th 2008 5:57PM
I have many heroes. They can be collected into one type of person, and that type is the one who lends a helping hand when no one's watching, being careful to avoid the limelight lest anyone would give them too much credit. They're just helping those who are in need, what each person on this planet should already be doing. For all those who do thankless jobs day in and day out, they are my hero.
