Dojo update: The Mushroomy Kingdom
It makes perfect sense: Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a game that oozes Nintendo from every pore. And if there's a level in gaming that is more quintessentially Nintendo than World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros., we have yet to see it. It is iconic.
The Mushroomy Kingdom -- note the extra "y" -- is Brawl's re-imagining of the most famous stage in Nintendo, nay, videogame history. It's not aged well, however. Nearly a quarter of a century has passed since Mario last visited 1-1, and it shows -- just look at the state of that flag. Some things haven't changed, though. As you fight, the stage still scrolls gently sideways, and every block and pit is still in place, just ... older. Better still, selecting this level may occasionally allow you the chance to visit World 1-2. Awesome, much?
Just looking at these pictures brought a smile to our faces this morning, and listening to the Mushroomy Kingdom theme only helped matters.

This just takes the cake. But really, please let there be many more stages still unannounced! What would be sweet is Nintendo to offer other stages from this game and others that are downloadable. Like, nearly perfect recreations, though having them aged is a nice effect.
Now please do this with Green Hill Zone!!!

The aged thing is odd. I understand there is a story to the subspace emissary, but I am disappointed that they have a post-apocoliptic 1-1. I'd think I'd get a kick out of beating subspace and seeing it returned to form though... oh shit, I guess I found the point.
Mario has returned to 1-1 recently. World 1-1 in Super Paper Mario is a basically a reimagined version of 1-1, am i rite?
Mr Khan @ Jan 23rd 2008 2:16PM
From my recollection, they didn't do a dedicated recreation of 1-1 in SPM, but they did do a dedicated recreation of 1-2, as a sub-world in the first stage of the Pixellated world
AnOffday @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:22AM
Is it just me or do none of the screenshots work?
ChrisCanberg @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:34AM
This stage is my new favorite. Just when I thought that the staff behind this game can't get anymore "genius" than they already are, they always surprise me with something fantastic. This is just another example. Plus, that music is perfect. It's really great.
To see all that this game is going to be compact with makes me happy. And then I remember that it got delayed another month. And I keep thinking that it's still coming February 10th. And then I realize that theres another month to wait, and I'm sad again.

Did Nintendo take the update down?
More importantly why?
samfish @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:58AM
This is the best stage yet by far.
I'd really really like to see Bowser's Castle as a stage, though.
NeverSage @ Jan 23rd 2008 1:23PM
Whoa whoa whoa, that's awesome. Now they need to remake the all of SMB1 with those graphics, this I command.
Sonic_13 @ Jan 23rd 2008 1:48PM
This level sounds sweet! I love how it is side-scrolling.
I think 1-2 is going to be even better because you have to fight while escaping through tunnels and making sure you don't get dragged away off screen by the level.
RDX @ Jan 23rd 2008 2:06PM
Definitely a very cool concept...
but makes for a bit of a boring backdrop, no?
samfish @ Jan 23rd 2008 3:08PM
I don't think it's boring.
Although I think it would be cooler if it were more being over run by nature.
RDX @ Jan 23rd 2008 3:58PM
That would be cool. Add some vegetation in there and I'd be really happy. But at least we know it's next gen, what with all the brown and all.
...did I really just use an ancient next gen joke?
racecar @ Jan 23rd 2008 2:16PM
The remake of the Mario theme is pure brilliance and shows just how awesome of a composer Kondo is.
After hearing some of the compositions, I wouldn't mind having a soundtrack to the game, in general.

Agree:
This game will clinch "original soundtrack of the year" for whatever awards institution dishes it out. The level of dedication to making music for this game is unreal
John @ Jan 23rd 2008 2:36PM
Man, seeing 1-1 in shambles is kind of a downer! THE AWESOMEST DOWNER OF ALL TIME! Can't wait to geek out on this game.
Croove55 @ Jan 23rd 2008 3:55PM
But there's more! World 2-2 is filled with ship wreckage and uranium, world 3-1 has a red glow on its black horizon, and world 8-4 is now an actual depiction of Dante's 9 circles of hell!
Not to say that I don't like the new stage, but when I read the one caption explaining the state of things, I felt like someone just told me my first neighborhood was hit with a nuke.
ScoTT @ Jan 23rd 2008 4:48PM
I love how they made the graphics for this level to make it look similar to other stages. It's like it went on "Pimp My Kingdom." Adding world 2-2 was a great idea too.
ScoTT @ Jan 23rd 2008 4:50PM
Oops I meant world 1-2.
glass soldiers @ Jan 23rd 2008 5:15PM
i cant wait to play 1-2
Dig @ Jan 23rd 2008 6:04PM
I see this level and I have to wonder. What happens when the level scrolls to the end castle, but there is still time left in the round? Do the characters fall into an infinite void that sits at the edge of the level?
Shadow31 @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:45PM
Was wondering that too. I'm assuming it somehow takes them back to the start; generally, that's what the moving levels did in Melee. At first when I noticed World 1-2's screenshot, I was wondering if it kept going through more levels. That would've been sweet.
Hey, the level editor should let us do scrolling stages so we can recreate all the SMB levels. :)
