Square Enix announces Final Fantasy IV sequel!
... for cell phones. In February, Square Enix will release Final Fantasy IV: The After -- Return to the Moon for FOMA 903i and better cell phones on NTT DoCoMo's network, with a release on au's phones to follow a month later. The game stars Theodore, a descendent of reformed Dark Knight Cecil, and takes place on the moon. None of the things we just said matter, because those cell phones are way more powerful than anything we've got outside Japan, and we are approximately 0% likely to see this game, ever.Yes, it is a crime and an insult that this game is not on the DS. Like it or not, cell phones are pretty much the only mobile device that Japan has more of than DSes, and the only device for which Square Enix could farm out a cheapo sequel to a major Final Fantasy game and get away with it.

From what I understand, Square-Enix DID release some of their cell phone games over here. Having said that, boy are they REALLY ramping up their cell phone gaming division!
This probably just like how the Parasite Eve people felt: disgusted and sad.

In Japan, yes.

i just recently got back from japan and the power of the mobiles over there is ridiculous!
full on games with graphics better than ps1 on decently sized screens a bit longer than a ds screen, although shorter.
i really wanted to buy one but wasn't sure of the dangers of bringing it back to the uk - language/operator :(
they're even using the same technology as panasonic viera tv's! :S

I hate you, Squenix. Yeah, release a sequel to my favorite game in the series on a platform which I'll never be able to play it. **** you.

Wait?! Didn't Square Enix release Final Fantasy V already? Aren't they suppose to be on VIII? Am I going crazy? Did I fail math? Does Japan have some sort of weird numerical sequence that no other part of the world uses? Somebody tell me how numbers work!
That was kind of fun to write, but I'm sure I'm not the only person that gets a little confused as to what is a new game in the series because of their numbering system.

Anyone who has played the Final Fantasy series for any period of time knows that just because it goes from IV to V, that doesn't constitute a sequel. Just look at Final Fantasy X-2.
This is very disappointing. Final Fantasy IV is the best in the series. Here's hoping it comes to the DS (or ANY system for that matter) in the US.
Brello @ Dec 14th 2007 12:40AM
Hey, that doesn't involve a DS at all!
TD @ Dec 14th 2007 1:16AM
Oh well. Final Fantasy sequels tend to suck hard, don't they? X-2 anyone? Or Dirge of Cerberus? Best to stick to the main series and the creative offshoots like Tactics or Crystal Chronicles.

Actually guys, it's Theodore from Alvin and the Chipmunks; it's a fact, look it up :)
elend @ Dec 14th 2007 4:16AM
Uhm. "The After" is something like "The Anus" in german. And I doubt they'll change the title, once they release it over here? IF they'll release it at all, that is..
