Dragon Quest IV boosts DS sales in Japan
Let's be honest, DS sales didn't really need a boost in Japan, but it seems that the handheld got one anyway with the release of Dragon Quest IV. DS hardware sales went up by over 55% for the week of 11/19 to 11/25, jumping from 76,069 units sold to 116,694. Hardware for all other platforms went up, too (perhaps in response to the upcoming holidays), but none rose as significantly as the DS.
The sales for the week ending 11/25 are as follows:

Its interesting how Japan and North America both embrace the Wii and DS, but when it comes to the Xbox America loves the thing and Japan can' stand it. I mean 7117 units. Thats poor.

It's simply a case of who has had (and spent) more time pushing the console in the specific region. I remember a story a while ago about MS linking with a pizza delivery company in Japan and they sold Xbox themed pizzas or something. And there were prizes or incentives etc.
Do you get that in the US? No, you get Halo 3 adverts with reallllly high production values.
Similarly, I'm sure Nintendo knows its Japanese market very well (being a Japanese company primarily, etc).
So in the least "trying make a point" way possible, I don't think it's interesting at all. It's quite expected.

And of course, they're just minor examples, not definitive ones. ~
