VC brings in cash, but it doesn't print money

Hatano also revealed how this translates to money, reporting that the VC has brought in 3.5 billion yen (approximately $33 million USD) in sales. This confuses us a little, because even if every game downloaded was a NES game (the cheapest available), at $5 a pop that would lead to a minimum of $39 million in sales. Unless, of course, Hatano is talking about net profit (after licensing costs, server fees, etc.), in which case the figure he gave makes more sense.
Hatano said, "We're currently unsure if this is a lot or low. They're not bad figures." With almost 15 million Wii owners in the world, these numbers are certainly not stellar. Of course, considering that not all Wii owners have their consoles connected online, 7.8 million isn't terrible, either. In any case, $33 million is some decent profit for not even a full year, and the VC's first year, at that.

I think its a total profit, Minus marketing , Dev, and research.

It is a little odd, all the Nintendo published properties should be next to pure profit, even if they're not getting everything from the Genesis, Neo Geo, T16, and 3rd party titles (which they wouldn't, of course)

With all the money that Nintendo makes in all the areas I am shocked that we are not seeing more of that money invested back into the little white box with more updates and games. I know with all the profit that we could have more. Unless Nintendo is holding back for the future.

Either way, that's still not a bad number. Without the virtual console, that's $33 million they probably wouldn't have seen at all.

Hold up what's that picture? Can u make VC point cards?
andyhoffmandy @ Nov 29th 2007 7:52PM
Can we say Dreamcast addition anyone? eh? eh?
Almadi @ Nov 29th 2007 8:06PM
Is that for Nintendo only? As in is that Nintendos cut from non-Nintendo VC games?
How much are Nintendo getting out of a $9 NeoGeo game?

Do regions outside of the US get to specify how many points they want aside from multiples of 10? Because if so, I wouldn't have to spend 20 dollars every time there's one game that I wanted if America's shop channel got that feature.

I must disagree, http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7895/wiimoneyvz1.png

Hi. The image posted above is the widget I created for OS X. I created it to test the beta version of Dashcode (the developer tool to make widgets) and to simply create a widget. I based the currency/point amounts on what I researched (mainly Wikipedia). It's nothing amazing, just a simple tool to tell you how much money a certain amount of Wii Points will cost. It might be out of date by now - I'll have to check, someone let me know if they can.
You can download the widget here:

Yeah, that must be a "net profit" number... I know they've gotten at least $50 from me...in some cases, for games that I bought from them years ago (also for a profit)....
Cliff @ Nov 30th 2007 1:54AM
The reason it doesn't print money is that they don't offer the best games. Nintendo is following a strategy of holding back their games so that third parties can put stuff on the system. When I first got my Wii, I immediately lost interest in the virtual console, because they didn't offer any good games on it.

... still waiting for Earth Bound, Super Mario RPG, and Kirby Super Star...
If any of those appear, I HAVE TO buy something on the VC... for now, I just want a lot, but get a little.

You think Walmart sell those points cards at cost?
