Dojo update: Talking display preferences
Today's dojo update focuses on the display options for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The game will support both standard, 4:3 display and widescreen, 16:9 display. And, should you not be all up to snuff on your knowledge of widescreen vs. normal display options, the game will let you know which display option is best for you based on the TV your Wii is playing the game on.
Oh, and there's also a nice musical track you can give a listen to.

Are people truly that retarded that they can't tell the difference between wide(16:9) and standard (4:3)?
hvnlysoldr @ Nov 27th 2007 12:20PM
Yes
Charles @ Nov 27th 2007 12:22PM
Well, when it comes to some technologically impaired parents (or otherwise), seeing these numbers there, just like that isn't gonna tell them anything...obviously once you explain it once it gets through forever (or a period of time at least) but I would be willing to bet that if you ask a couple of people just passing by in the streets what the difference between 16:9 and 4:3, lots will tell you they don't know...and to all those that will reply to this, this is not a form of defense towards what Sakurai has created, but rather an informed comment.
Thank you,
Charles

Some people might not be able to tell. Like kids. Or dolts. They shouldn't be cut off from the gaming experience. LOL
Charles @ Nov 27th 2007 12:25PM
WHY ARE THEY DOLTS?! Just because they are misinformed, doesn't mean that they are dolts!

Correction: "...and 4:3 IS,..."
Nate @ Nov 27th 2007 12:36PM
I'm not saying they should be cut off, but the Wii has settings in the console for 4:3 or 16:9. I don't understand the need for a second place for the setting...
Zertoss @ Nov 27th 2007 2:16PM
Maybe this setting can set the Wii's screen setting, so people who don't understand the screen ratios have a way to set the display that gives you a perfect visual way to adjust the screen.
Also, being able to change the screen options from in-game could be great if you've taken your console somewhere and, oh crap! Forgot to change the screen settings before starting the game! Don't need to leave the game to fix it, the settings are right there. If that's how this works, then the sound settings should be adjustable too, and I'm talking Mono, Stereo or Surround, not just volume.

Woah woah woah, I never said you HAD to be a dolt to not know, nor was I calling everybody who didn't know a dolt. I was just saying there might be some good reasons for not knowing, on top of which the obvious reason is there is no real need for everybody to be familiar with the terms 4:3 and 16:9. Lol I merely meant that people who aren't so bright and don't care about electronics don't ever have to worry about their screen in this system. But yeah I am perplexed since Wii comes with a setting in the firmware.
sn1per420 @ Nov 27th 2007 12:52PM
The wii has a 4:3/16:9 option, and I thought games displayed whatever was selected there. Why do we need a new option within the game? Also, does the pushed-back release date mean we won't be getting many more useful updates from now on?
Shadow31 @ Nov 27th 2007 12:53PM
Wow, what an update... I'm expecting this is to stretch out the updates, including nearly useless information. Give us a demo and I don't care if they stop updates until the game comes out.
In other news, anyone else think the remix of Donkey Kong sounds amazing? No, just me? Fine, I will have my own party... with blackjack... and hookers... in fact, forget the party and the blackjack... aw, screw the whole thing...
Joshua @ Nov 27th 2007 1:00PM
I think it's interesting to note that, based on the screenshots from the official website, while you gain some horizontal field of view on the sides in the widescreen mode, you also lose some vertical field of view on the bottom of the screen compared to the same screenshot in 4:3 mode, so the horizontal gain isn't as much, and there is a more "zoomed-in" effect going on in widescreen mode.
troy @ Nov 27th 2007 1:18PM
but dude... widescreen is cooler
Joshua @ Nov 27th 2007 2:08PM
Haha, I guess that will be the general public's view on the matter.
As for me, I'm sticking with 4:3, like I do with all my Wii games (even though I play on a 16:9 TV).
Dash @ Nov 27th 2007 1:34PM
Hey, now that we are really out of cool updates to read about, anybody wnat to guess which will be the next ones?
We shoul make a pool: "What you think will be the next Dojo Updates"
First guess: "Sound Options - Song selection, Sound Test, and even the volume control"(well, if they consider display an update)
Second guess: "Capcom smashs in. Megaman is the new Brawler, and Wesker a new assist trophy" (a guy can dream)
Anybody else want to take a guess?
Croove55 @ Nov 27th 2007 2:04PM
I lawled.
Yeah, I can see him pulling something like Sound Options in order to stretch the updates. And yes, Capcom needs to join the party. I wanna have a match between Megaman and Samus. 2 colliding charge beams = EPIC.
My bet goes on the first one though.
Mike @ Nov 27th 2007 5:02PM
Im already doing something like that. Check it out.
