Dojo update: Saki Amamiya to dole out punishment for your sins
No doubt about it: the Assist Trophies announced thus far for Brawl have pretty much rocked. Andross, Little Mac, a Nintendog, Gray Fox, Excitebikers, Samurai Goroh, a Hammer Brother, Mr. Resetti; the sheer randomness of this list delights us, and when it comes to unleashing some Assist Trophy hurt on our opponents, we probably won't know where to start.
Today's dojo update has only exacerbated our dilemma. See, it's not so much that we really like Treasure's exquisite N64 game Sin and Punishment (available on the Virtual Console now, as if we needed to remind you). It's more that we unconditionally love it, want to marry it, have its children, and settle down in the 'burbs with it for a life of rosy contentment.
Hence, the news that the star of that game, Saki Amamiya, will be an Assist Trophy in Brawl has put us in a right old tizzy. He sounds pretty useful, as well, with his Cannon Sword doubling up as both a sword and a gun, allowing him to slice and shoot his way through whoever's silly enough to get in his way.

I'm not a fan of these sword-welding Assist Trophies. I think there's too many :(
But that's just my opinion. Half of these Assist Trophies I've never even heard of. But I'm sure whatever hard-core fans of the series that a certain Assist Trophy is from are flipping out when they see these. I don't know, I guess I just haven't been involved in enought Nintendo series from the past to know where half of these Assist Trophies are from...

If half of the trophies are "sword guys", the other half will be spam-guys, such as the Excitebikers (from Mars?) and the Advance Wars trophies, they're the same, just differnet graphics.

You know what this game really needs? A resident evil character. Add Leon and this game is complete.
Drew @ Nov 22nd 2007 5:09PM
Yeah, I think Leon is actually a really good idea.

I never even thought of Suki when I go over idea of who could be in Brawl. I always just think of Red/Blue/Seven Force from Gunstar Heroes if Treasure was to get involved.
But now that I see him in the game, I really want him to be playable. Along with Lyndis.

You know something, these Assist Trophies, as cool as they are, are only cool for characters that DON'T have potential to be playable.
Some of these reasons might be that they don't have enough material to make movesets, but that can be said about some playable characters as well. For example, Captain Falcon. He's a racer, you don't ever see him actually fighting. Peach too. The only legit Mario adventure she's been playable in was Super Mario Bros. 2. Same goes for Zelda, but Sheik is understandable. They've just never been seen fighting.
Out of all the Assist Trophies named, this is up there on the list of Assist Trophies that could have been playable. Why not Lyndis playable? Why not Saki playable? It's like Sakurai said himself in today's update, Saki has absolutely no problem fitting in. Who else could suffer this fate you say? Uhhh let's see. Knuckle Joe could have been awesome. Gray Fox, enough said, and the most important potential character, Little Mac. If this is gunna be Brawl's way of representing one of the best games on the NES, then that's a shame. He's a boxer, and you're telling me that you can't think of a good enough moveset for him?
All this means is that the actual playable characters had better be sick. Sorry that this comment is so long, but this has been an impending problem I've been having with this. If Assist Trophies are gunna get right in your face and slash at you with a sword or punch you all over or whatever, there's no reason that they shouldn't be characters. Except if there really isn't a way. Like Samurai Goroh.

Stupid Pokemon! All they do is come out and attack! Some just sit there and spam, or jump at them and miss! I'm whining!
I almost feel how you feel that these characters aren't playable, just like those pokemon; however it's better than being just trophies or stickers.
SoshiKitai @ Nov 23rd 2007 12:27AM
*sigh* ... don't complain, these trophies are cool to have...
>_> Besides most assist trophies just plain aren't Nintendo-enough to be considered as a playable character.
Sure, there are some characters that may not even seem Nintendo, but they're the surprise of the game, giving the game a whole 'nother edge.
In all honesty, if this character *points at picture above* was a playable character, it'd feel like Soul Calibur, not Super Smash.
It's supposed to be a rock-em sock-em battle, not a flashy and precise fight.
I find it kinda ridiculous to even EXPECT MORE from an upcoming Super Smash... it's like an anniversary party- they threw the party, so they can choose the cake.
Super Smash isn't some regular fighting game, it's a game that throws surprises for everyone.
---I'm not sure if I'm even making sense... stupid Thanksgiving making me slow to the head.

Have you not played Super Mario RPG? Peach uses both a parasol and frying pan in the game, and again in Melee.
Donald @ Nov 23rd 2007 9:47AM
And lest we forget Super Princess Peach...

All I can take out of this is there will be a new Sin game. I just hope that is the case and of so this time I hope it will not only stay in Japan.
