Dojo update: Lucas is packing moves
Lucas just might be our new favorite character to hate, as today the dojo reveals his special move list. Sure, Fox has the annoying ability to reflect everything and spam his pistol across the whole level, but Lucas might have him beat with the Psi Magnet maneuver you see above. It allows him to absorb projectiles and turn it into health.
Since our favorite character is Samus, he could very well be a lot of trouble to fight.

Does this mean no more Ness? They're basically the same.
Mr Khan @ Nov 8th 2007 4:47PM
Sweet, its like they took Ness back to the shop, took away the hat (although i'll miss the hat), added wavy blond hair, and then increased the number of moves that involve PSI
I think we're going to love Lucas (but miss Ness)

I'll have to disagree #1. On Melee, with a cursory glance you might say that Marth and Roy are "basically the same" but anyone who's spent a significant time with the game will tell you there's a world of difference. Same goes for Fox/Falco, Falcon/Ganandorf, Mario/Luigi. Yes they are clones, but they handle much differently. Plus, you can't tell from screenshots how a character will move on the ground or in the air. Maybe he's a little heavier and can't jump as high but he's stronger, or maybe it's the other way around. I, for one, hope that Ness is there too. Can't wait!

I have to retort, worm. Yes, clone characters played slightly differently from the characters they copied. But they're copies of that character. And Brawl's creators have said they're not going to be doing clone characters again. And why would they go out of their way to reveal and hype a new character in this way on the dojo if he's just a clone of another character? I think it's fairly certain at this point that they've replaced Ness with Lucas. And why not? Ness was only in one game: Mother 2. There have been 3 Mother games, each staring a different protagonist: Ninten, Ness, and Lucas. All of whom are extremely similar. When Melee was released, there were only two, and Ness was the most recent protagonist. But since then, Mother 3 has come out and now the most recent protagonist is Lucas. There really isn't a particular reason for them to keep Ness. The only half-decent reason would be fan preference. And hey, let's face it. The reason people play Ness is for his play style and moves, not his cutting wit and personality.

I think I know my character in Brawl! Just look at the distance of that PK Thunder! Can you say: Use bat + Aerial back kick until enemies thoroughly annihilated?

Now, in case people skipped over the first sentence on the official Smash Update...
"There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now, and Lucas is very similar."
Notice the statment, "...up until now..."
Which would imply that Ness is no longer with us.
HawthorneKitty @ Nov 8th 2007 6:27PM
Ness had a good run...
Hopefully he comes back as an AT at least. =[
AlgusUnderdunk @ Nov 8th 2007 6:49PM
I'm still put off that they'd remove a character from the game that both American and Japanese gamers could enjoy, and replace him with a character only Japanese gamers could really sink their teeth into...
...although I have played Mother 3 to the end, it's a great game, and guess what? Ness shows up in it.
Specifically, Lucas and company will spot Ness and company in, guess where?
New Pork City.
Yes, the same New Pork City that's been confirmed as a stage. SO, they chose the ONE location in Mother 3 where both Lucas AND Ness show up.
Hmmmmmm.
Croove55 @ Nov 8th 2007 7:16PM
You make a wonderful point, Algus. Besides, Sakurai (or his translator, one of the two) is known for being sneaky in his blogging methods. Ness might have a chance in appearing in some form, whether as a playable character, an assist trophy, or a stage element in New Pork City.
On a second note, PK Freeze looks niiice. Hopefully it's *slightly* faster than PK Flash, just enough to give it more regular use. But probably not.
Mr Khan @ Nov 8th 2007 7:19PM
@ Croove55
Yeah, if PK Flash had been faster, and if Ness had been given a more forceful up-smash attack, i could've really gotten good with him in Melee (i was excellent with Ness in the original)
Lucas, actually, seems to have fixed those flaws somewhat
worm @ Nov 8th 2007 7:48PM
So Drahken, do you think we won't have Luigi? He is "just a clone" I suppose. It would be pretty silly to have a Smash bros game without Luigi. Clearly, you didn't play Melee enough to appreciate just how completely different the so-called clones are.
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Nov 8th 2007 10:09PM
Luigi wasn't a complete clone of Mario in Melee (in the original, though, he was). As he had the Green Missile attack in Melee.
Dr. Mario, though... Is not only a clone, but he's a CLONE.
Croove55 @ Nov 9th 2007 5:16PM
LUCAS: He's Ness, only blonde and smart enough to NOT use a yo-yo in battle. HOORAY LUCAS!
I'm still going to miss Ness if he doesn't show up, though.
