Meowth is pretty much the best Pokemon ever
With this morning's Smash Dojo announcement, we thought that today was as good a time as any to remind you about why Meowth is the awesomest Pokemon of all time (the anime character, not the species). Of the hundreds of reasons we could bring up to support this argument, we've picked out five for you to chew on:
- Meowth is one of the VERY few Pokemon who can converse with humans. Respect.
- Meowth actually taught himself to speak and walk upright, all so he could win the heart of a female who rejected him. He eventually got over her trifling ways and pursued other flames.
- Even though he grew up in Hollywood, Meowth has a Brooklyn accent. That's just how he rolls.
- Like Pikachu, Meowth doesn't bother with that Poke Ball mess. He has more dignity than that.
- Because of Meowth's intense determination to mimic human traits, he never learned a lot of battle moves, including his species' signature attack, Pay Day. Despite that, he still rocked Brock's Onix, acting as both trainer and Pokemon, throwing buckets of water on the boulder-ish creature.
- BONUS: Meowth cranks dat Soulja Boy.
Meowth realizes his calling:

Could it be? Did someone else watch a bunch of Pokemon cartoons somehow? I remember this episode.
KaBob799 @ Oct 17th 2007 11:34PM
Heh meowth was cool, too bad the show isnt worth watching anymore.
hvnlysoldr @ Oct 17th 2007 11:57PM
I've seen hundreds of Pokemon episodes. I still occasionally watch the reruns.

I agree with Eric. This was definitely one of the best episodes in the entire series. Some serious character development and backstory here.
It's a shame, though, Team Rocket's Meowth is weak in battle due to its higher intellect. Though, I always wondered why they didn't just use a TM to teach it Pay Day? Then again, I don't recall TMs/HMs ever appearing in the Pokémon anime.
Maddie Blaustein's perfomance of Meowth is one of the things I miss the most about the switch from 4Kids to PUI (actually, I liked all of the voice actors; They do good work, it's not their fault 4Kids excessively censors everything). In comparison, I've found Meowth's Japanese voice to be a bit grating and irritating. (the related video links had the JP version of the flashback).
Today's Japanese lesson:
ice cream = ice cream (アイスクリーム, aisukuriimu)
fried chicken = fried chicken (フライドチキン,furaidochikin)
XD

You should hear the current voices on the show that is on Cartoon Network. Horrible!

Yeah they sound terrible.
Croove55 @ Oct 18th 2007 12:50AM
Master Caoili, I can say that you have made a very odd last post for the day. Bravo. I don't know where my opinion lies on the subject though.
Turdis @ Oct 18th 2007 1:27AM
Whoa whoa whoa, am I the only one disturbed by the fact that they hung him from a tree (presumably to die) just for knocking over a container of baseballs?
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Oct 18th 2007 1:30AM
Maybe your negaself in Earth Minus One saw the more awesome episodes of Pokemon.
Croove55 @ Oct 18th 2007 1:35AM
FS, it is far too late for references to PA.
Nah, just kidding. It's never too late for Penny Arcade. Not EVER.
David W. @ Oct 18th 2007 1:47AM
Am I really the only one who winced when I read this article? Pokemon? honestly? sooo elementary school...haha
Author X @ Oct 18th 2007 2:28AM
@Turdis: Who said they left him there "to die"? They were probably just hanging him there either until they figured out what to do with him, or just for some hours for punishment.
And the Training Daze episode was pretty sweet (and flashbacktastic), but then, I always liked Meowth the least of the three and that episode somewhat confirmed my suspicion that Jessie and James could have been a lot better off if he wasn't messing them up.

You must also be wincing at every Nintendo game with an 'E' rating. How terrible life must be for you... I hate to imagine what your reaction must be to "pre-school level" entertainment. Seizure, perhaps?
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Oct 18th 2007 3:37AM
@Author X:
Whose to say it's Meowth's fault that the Team Rocket trio fail every single time? Jessie and James haven't shown to be all that well in following through with plans, either.
@Trashman:
While I don't think the new cast is as good as the 4Kids cast (but, that may also be due to hearing the same voices for, what, eight years?), I don't think they're horrible, either. However, it seems like most of them impersonate the old cast, instead of giving the characters their own voices. Which usually results in failure.
On the plus side of the Pokémon USA dub, they don't alter the BGM like 4Kids did (really, that's so pointless), however the theme songs they come up with are a step worse than any of 4Kids' music (One Piece rap excluded).

I hate that stupid crap accent they call brooklyn. Before anyone turns on their flamethrowers i have to say I WAS BORN AND RARED(people raise cattle, trust me its the appropiate term) IN BROOKLYN and we don't talk like that nor does anyone else that lives in nyc. To tell you the truth it is a disrespect to italian americans and caucasian americans, and they dont even sound remotely like that. But i do like that episode, poor meowth.
Metayoshi @ Oct 18th 2007 5:56AM
No... NO Soulja Boy please... That canceled out EVERYTHING you said that was good about Meowth.
ELIJAH @ Oct 18th 2007 8:15AM
I kind of get sad when i see this episode because meowth never meant wrong and still got dumped. i hope she has a pokeSTD.
ELIJAH @ Oct 18th 2007 8:29AM
@JC FLETCHER how is it remotely possible that you posted a comment corresponding to the article exactly one minute before the article was uploaded :). Did you catch CELIBI? It's still impossible even with time travel,Do you have the seven dragon balls?
Mike Sylvester @ Oct 18th 2007 9:23AM
I admit to having watched a few eps of Pokemon, so I'm familiar with that one. It's my favorite episode and really endeared Meowth to me. It broke my heart when he went on to slaughter the younglings and hit his pregnant wife on his slow descent into the dark side.
LeChuck @ Oct 18th 2007 11:28AM
What always seemed odd to me, why didn't Meowth come up with a name for himself rather than going by his species name like all other Pokemon. Seems silly to go to all that trouble to be an individual and not have your own name. I wondered the same thing about 7-of-9 from Star Trek Voyager, lol.
jo @ Oct 18th 2007 7:14PM
Awww I remember this episode, it made me cry haha... Poor meowth.
