Dojo update: Tourney game mode revealed
For those of us who've participated in many a Smash Bros. tournament, Nintendo has provided us with a Tourney game mode now. Complete with brackets and an official approach, there's no getting out of your loss. Documentation proves who kicked the crap out of who.
So, yeah ... Tourney mode.

am i the only one, but does anyone else think the main menu screens for SSBB look very unprofessional/slopped together? i mean i REALLY liked the one from SSBM..in particular i think the font choices are really ugly...
Crazy-8 @ Sep 28th 2007 2:22PM
Does anyone else think the chick with the purple headband on the tourney screen could be a new character. And if so, who?
Sonic_13 @ Sep 28th 2007 2:23PM
@#1 - I disagree. I actually just commented today on how cool I thought the menus looked.
I am really excited about this new tournament mode. This really opens up for some exciting possibilities.
Sonic_13 @ Sep 28th 2007 2:27PM
@#2 - Nice job noticing that.
I believe you are referring to this image with the players named SET and RAM.

It could be a new character, although when I look closely it sort of looks like Zelda with a purple headband instead of her gold one.
worm @ Sep 28th 2007 2:42PM
Um...check out the champion of the tournament's name in the last image, then check out my username. They are the same! I've been using the name "WORM" for smash for several years and i've never seen anyone else with it. I'm famous!
Nushio (NDF - Blue) @ Sep 28th 2007 3:21PM
Regarding Set and Ram: I believe that's Wario.
Sonic_13 @ Sep 28th 2007 3:43PM
@#5 - Congrats on your new fame! :P
@#6 - Is that a joke, because it is clearly not Wario...
GoldenPie @ Sep 28th 2007 3:59PM
Isn't that Zelda? =/

This is great news for me. In my apartment we always used to have Mario Kart tournaments on the Gamecube, and we were hoping to do Smash Bros. tourneys this generation (or at least until Mario Kart comes out), and now we don't even have to do it by hand...the game keeps track of it for us ^_^
Only thing that'd make it better is if you could do a tourney online with, say, 3 or 4 people at my place, and 5 or 6 at a friend's house, and 1 or 2 at another friend's house...that'd rock.
BluClouds7 @ Sep 28th 2007 4:22PM
could this mean that there are at least 32 characters....?
Mr Khan @ Sep 28th 2007 4:30PM
meh, the tournaments i do, either alone or with friends, are much better when i build them because i can get more options (like double elimination in 4P matches, eliminate 3rd and 4th place from the match) I also like to mix and match game modes (time, stock, coin, bonus) to upset anyone whose particularly good in any one, plus i can seed characters and have close to the exact number of characters (impossible in Melee, since it was 25, so i just repeated Dr. Mario)
Yeah, i use a lot of paper keeping track of it all, but its worth it
But i like this game's menu system, reminds me of the severely underrated Kirby Air Ride
badboy007ing @ Sep 28th 2007 4:39PM
oh man now just put this online with 64 players in one tourney and this game will kick a$$ this game is getting better and better with each new update
worm @ Sep 28th 2007 4:54PM
Do you guys not know that this "tourney mode" is almost exactly the same as the one on Melee. I mean, literally, a copy-paste from Melee.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 28th 2007 5:04PM
Melee was perfect. Melee is the foundation they are building the most perfectest game on.
Case Boyle @ Sep 28th 2007 5:54PM
It really breaks my heart to see people getting all excited over the in-game tournament mode. As 13 said, this is indeed a copy-paste from Melee's tourney mode, just maybe a little easier to setup? Either way, still not the way anyone who's played in real tournies will want their tournament setup.
Personally, MLG tournament rules have always made for the most balanced outcome of players skill in Smash. I'll prolly get burned for taking the game so seriously, but I love the competitive scene for Smash Bros. Melee was definitely ups from N64, and hopefully Brawl still has all the technical play that Melee had, including WD'ing, L-cancels, etc.
Also, the girl with the purple headband - yes, that is Zelda. Especially considering that Zelda is an announced character, and that's the only icon on there that resembles her...
Anyway, the tourney mode - eh. Unless it has stuff like best 2/3 and stage limitations and whatnot, it's not gonna replicate the way a lot of people who actually play in tournaments will want it.
Mr Khan @ Sep 28th 2007 6:09PM
@ Case Boyle
That's exactly what i mean, even though i don't do tournaments for competitive reasons (they're just ways to kill an hour with lots of fun) I still require far more options to satisfy me than what is digitally offered
A better system would've been "Create a tourney" building them from the ground up, allowing mixing and matching just like they had with Special Brawl
jjjjjjjjjjjjjj @ Sep 30th 2007 6:36PM
ugh this really sucks, now tournaments can only hold 32 players :(. If you notice the screen with the 32 bracket it only shows the arrow going left so basically it cant go right because there cant be any more than 32. WOW THAT SUCKS this is supposed to be an upgrade from melee, in which i always did 64. but wow this is just like yeah we also threw in tourney mode, just like online. Its there, but a little half butted. AND yeah the melee menus are WAY better @1
LeChuck @ Sep 30th 2007 8:42PM
I was a lot more excited for the game before the online details came out. These aren't as disappointing as that but still not quite satisfying.
