Winamp streams to the Wii
Many may profess that iTunes is the ultimate application for listening to music on the PC. For us, Winamp has always been (and probably always will be) where it's at. And, we're quite happy to report that Winamp now works with the Wii.
Users then can do a little thing here or there, point their Wii's web browser to here and stream music directly from their internet-enabled PC. You can also allow other users to stream content from your PC set up on the Wii, allowing them to check out video and music from your host machine.
Technology, ain't she grand?

I have an unhealthy and intense hatred for Winamp, (opting instead to use VLC or WMP) but this particular feature may make me download a copy to try it out, even then I have no actual use for such a feature.
But still, it sure is cool.

Best. News. Ever.
Winamp is undoubtedly the best application for listening to music. iTunes has its merits, but it still doesn't hold a candle to Winamp.

Yesssss.
Although I am mainly a Linux user, Winamp is by far my number one choice as a media player for Windows.

Winamp is the best music player for Windows, though I still prefer VLC for videos. But, since I don't have a wireless router/that damned USB Adapter, I'm screwed. But my Wii and PC are in the same room, so no big deal.

"Powered by Orb"
Wait... Orb? They use the exact same thing as Orb, even my Orb account was used for login. Sorry, I'm not interested in anything that Orb does since their interface was horrible.
I just tried this Orb with Winamp's name on it, and it was WORSE than what Orb has. I can see 2 out of a BUNCH of playlists that I created in winamp, whereas I can see a LOT more in Orb. Tell me when they get past Beta and maybe I'll give it another try.
Backslash @ Sep 18th 2007 12:49AM
This is the same program Orb uses, as Metayoshi says. Just use Orb -- it's better anyway.
Either way, this is still terribly inconvenient -- and still outdated and apparently unupdated, too.

lame... this doesn't work for linux user. seems like an application like this would be right at home on linux. i could really use it too...
nair @ Sep 18th 2007 1:09AM
linux sucks, there is very little that it works with. i like winamp for my windows pc but i dont see much of a point for having it on my wii.

These people are obviously idiots.

I use WinAmp for audio and VLC for videos. I only use iTunes to get my podcasts and update my iPod. I tried Orb when it first became Wii compatible, and I hated it. So I'm gonna pass on this one, but I'm happy they're still trying.

iTunes' primary function isn't even playing music, it's transferring authorized content to iPods (and as a billion-dollar corollary, selling said content to iPod owners).
iTunes for Windows has to be one of the worst apps ever made. It rivals Internet Explorer in its frustrating retardation. The OS X version can at least be kludged to usability with Applescript.

Orb worked in fits and starts for me so I finally gave up on it. I used an earlier version of Winamp Remote that was more suited for mobile devices than the Wii but it worked well. When I went to sign in last week I saw the new interface and was like dag, it's just like Orb and not going to work. Well I have yet to have any issue with it, and dig the Halloween color scheme. I does video streaming much better than Orb which I know makes no sense as they look to be the same but maybe the good people at Null Soft tweaked some things or something.

@RUBANG i know its gonna be hot. when i get it and wifi access do u wanna battle. We could probably trade FC's. this applies to everyone though.

On a related note, check out Sockso: http://sockso.pu-gh.com/ . It's a free "personal music server" and its built-in Flash player works great with the Wii browser-sound quality seemed quite good to my untrained ears.
Just start up Sockso on your PC, set up a folder of MP3s to share, and point the Wii browser to your PC's IP address and Sockso's port, e.g. 192.168.0.100:4444 . Confirmed to work for streaming from Linux and XP.

Orb? no thanks. I tried it. Concept is cool but having to stream my music from my LAN to the 'net and then back through my LAN again is not the most efficient use of my 100baseT network :D hehe. I'll try out that Sockso. LAN to LAN. That's the way it should be.

How on earth is Winamp superior at all -- let alone vastly -- to iTunes? I see next to no basis for this statement unless the claim is coming from someone who a) hates Apple, or b) wants to do some weird, haxxor-style thing with their multimedia program that iTunes doesn ot facilitate.
And no, I don't own a Mac.
iLoons @ Sep 22nd 2007 12:32AM
Yeah, wanting to use itunes to transfer music off an ipod is soooo haxxorish.
Wanting to use standard Windows conventions for batch file manipulation is just so out there.
iTunes sucks. It's at an Internet Explorer-level of suckitude, and just like IE only morons are satisfied with it.
