Wii is officially best-selling next-generation console

That's the word from the Financial Times, who we'll choose to trust about the finances of the times. The publication aggregated Japanese sales data from Enterbrain, U.S. sales from the NPD group, and European sales data from GfK to determine that the Wii has sold about 9 million units worldwide, versus 8.9 million units sold of its (extremely) close competitor, the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 has sold 3.7 million units.
Of course, for maximum gloat-effectiveness, we must point out that the Xbox 360 has been out for a year longer than the Wii. A little advice for Microsoft: try selling your consoles in Japan!

And just to think, Galaxy, Brawl, and Wii Fit haven't even come out yet! Also, this means Nintendo is already close to halving the worldwide sales of the GCN. Insane!

Those games don't matter in the short term, though... The console is still consistantly sold out EVERYWHERE i look, yes you can find one, but wiis aren't going to be flying off the shelves for brawl because there arn't wiis sitting on them... I honestly don't think Nintendo could sell more wiis if it wanted to without upping production.
So all these new games might make the length of time before we start seeing wiis regularly a bit farther away, but their weekly sales really cant go up much higher then they are if you ask me.
WHOOO NINTENDO!

I think that XBLA might be to rescue of M$ situation in Japan. Price to develop games for XBLA is minuscule compared to full-featured disk games. That might interest Jap indie and amateur game devels.
If only M$ did advertised well in Japan. Last I heard, their ad campaign in Japan was made actually in US. Talk about bad taste.

For some reason I found this to be extremely funny!

This is really a Next Gen console...
Sonic_13 @ Sep 13th 2007 3:08PM
I believe that Wii is the next gen sales leader, but that group has its numbers too low.
In Nintendo's June annual report it was reported that Wii had already sold 9.27 million units.
I know this group is limiting the sources from which it gets its numbers, but they are too low, especially when making big claims like they did.
srenehan @ Sep 13th 2007 4:28PM
@10 - I'm guessing these numbers are at least a month or two old... in order to gather all the different numbers from different regions...Makes sense that they're behind the times... of course that means Microsoft has been behind a while now...and they're even less likely to come back with the "halo 3 boost" that i honestly don't see happening
Danny @ Sep 13th 2007 4:32PM
@Sonic 13-
The "sales" figures 1st parties like to release is frequently a measure of consoles shipped to retailers, not consoles sold to consumers. This could explain the difference in these figures.

So let's all get fitzjangled and start an AIM chatroom and play some DS or some Strikers or something to celebrate?
Marrvia @ Sep 13th 2007 5:55PM
I thought the big quote from Nintendo when Wii was first announced and everyone was skeptical about if it would even do well was...
"Wii is not competing with Xbox 360 and PS3"
So why is this news then?
JC Fletcher @ Sep 13th 2007 5:56PM
Right! PR statements made by companies are not only always accurate and free from hyperbole, but they're always prophetic as well!
Mr Khan @ Sep 13th 2007 6:14PM
@ Danny; Nintendo is known for using "sold" figures, although they may shade the numbers in their favor if its possible
But all of these numbers are well behind the vgchartz figures...
