Wii Warm Up: Civilization -- are we squealing alone?
Are we alone in our extreme enjoyment of the Civilization franchise? Well, we're probably not alone, since it's a big seller, but we mean here. Are you guys on the boat, especially now that we know it'll offer online play? We've played console versions before and have been less than impressed, but we can't help but hope that this time, it'll be as smooth as, say, snot on glass. Which is pretty darned smooth for such an icky image.

Its too bad we have to wait so long for it to arrive.
brian @ Aug 26th 2007 11:07AM
I have never play any of the games so i'm not squealing.
vidGuy @ Aug 26th 2007 11:46AM
What brian said.
Mr Khan @ Aug 26th 2007 11:53AM
Strategy is fun, online is fun, i see no reason not to squeal
Even if i've never played them (my PC doesn't have the stomach for games at all, even if i slaughter the recommended system requirements, like i did with PSO: BB, it always comes out unplayable)
DonWii @ Aug 26th 2007 11:55AM
I'd be more excited about it if it wasn't 6 months late and coming to the DS. I am a handheld junkie. Choosing to wait 6 months is not an option.
What will probably happen is that it won't sell well, and 2K will be like "SEE, this doesn't sell on Wii" when, in reality, it is just 6 months late to the party.
Drahken @ Aug 26th 2007 12:29PM
Are you kidding? I didn't sleep for 48 hours after I installed Beyond the Sword last month. And I've been whacking off nightly to articles about Civ Revolution.
Sarah @ Aug 26th 2007 1:01PM
I used to be into Civ years ago, sort of lost interest. I'm not interested in online play because nintendo's online anything is broken. Until they fix that...
DonWii @ Aug 26th 2007 1:42PM
@Sarah,
If you mean FC, Fat Chance. If you mean anything else, I'd be interested to hear, since I see no problems with Strikers.
Tom Hands @ Aug 26th 2007 1:54PM
I'm hugely excited. Civ II is the only one I've played (on PS) and I was still addicted even with the crappy control scheme.
Online and 3D? Count me in.

Voice and Vision Chat? I am praying that they dont mean just for ps3 and 360, and that this is correct, as it will be an A++++++ game before it is released, IMO. I have always loved strategy games, and online games anyway, so this sounds like a MUST HAVE.
Michael K. @ Aug 26th 2007 2:56PM
im not with you in being excited, i dont hate the series or anything but there are way too many better games to get my time and money
Nessuno @ Aug 26th 2007 3:36PM
I'm not excited in the least. I have sunk many an hour playing Civ 4 and it's expansions. But based on every impression of the console version that I have read, I am not impressed in the least.
The developers seem to have adopted the notion that console gaming must be arcade-like and the only way to make an arcade Civ has been to dumb down the features and strategy.
MisterL @ Aug 26th 2007 5:11PM
You know what gets me excited? Starcraft! It's the only PC game I still play online, besides WC3.
Sensai @ Aug 26th 2007 5:39PM
I'm excited for it...
..kinda. I'm a big Civ4 dude, so, if this is online and such then I'll be game.
magnus @ Aug 26th 2007 5:17PM
In the past, people have enjoyed dedicating large portions of their lives to playing video games, but there has always come a time when one needs to stop playing, if only to uphold one's main body functions. Things such as the need for sleep and basic nutritions have always defeated the desire to keep playing.
This may be the game that ends that struggle. If they pull it of, with an intuitive interface and good online multiplayer, this may very well be the game that brakes me as a human being.
Dirk Dorkelson @ Aug 26th 2007 5:19PM
I'm super excited for this, but I'll be buying it for my 360, not my Wii, for what most likely will be a better online experience. Still, though, it's cool it's coming out for the Wii.
Dan @ Aug 27th 2007 11:01AM
Civ 4 multiplayer doesn't work, IMO. It's too long, too tedious. You have to play on an artificial "2 city victory" mode because it would just be too damn long to play a full multiplayer game. Too many people would drop link before a game is done.
I'm excited to see Revolution come to the Wii, and hopefully it can be a win-win for Civ and Nintendo.
James @ Aug 26th 2007 9:12PM
I'm pumped for it. I love the Civilization games, and as long as there is a pointer/mouse it's an RTS worth playing in my book.
iofthestorm @ Aug 27th 2007 12:48AM
Yeah, I think I'll be getting this at some time in the future, although when I'm not sure. One of my friends is obsessed with Civ4 so I kinda want to see what the series is like (although I know this game isn't going to be representative of the series). Thing is, there's too much first party stuff coming out for me to have time/money to play stuff like this.
thebes @ Aug 29th 2007 9:59PM
ohhhh ahhhhh
this sounds awesome!
James @ Aug 27th 2007 11:45AM
I'm holding my excitement until I see how they "distill" the gameplay -- they've already said that the new Civ will be a boiled-down version of the classic, with things "streamlined" to play faster. This could be great -- I don't think I've actually *finished* more than two or three games of any existing version of Civilization; I just never had the time -- or it could lose everything that made Civ great in the first place. I don't think we'll know anything useful until much, much closer to release.
Tye @ Aug 28th 2007 9:23PM
Civilization is the best video game series out there, in my opinion, so I see no reason why this shouldn't be a serious game of the year contender. Of course, that is assuming that they can competently translate the game from the PC version to the console versions.
The only thing that I see standing in its way is an audience that is unfamiliar with the series.
Mr Khan @ Aug 27th 2007 5:41PM
@ Tye
I don't know about that. A lot of hardcore PC gamers have Wii as their sole console, as its the one console that offers the experience that the PC can't, while PC pwns the two HD consoles
Anything's possible
