Wii Warm Up: What do you hate about the Wii?

Surely, such a post title is hard to read, quite possibly causing a massive heart attack in our older readers. But, we all must face the fact that, although we love it, the Wii is in no way perfect. It has its issues, which we've talked about before. Some are more like little pet peeves, while others are full-blown deal breakers.For us, our biggest nuisance is the fact that we have to enter our credit card information every time we go to purchase some Wii Points (outside world, be damned!). It's caused us to be the unwitting recipient of memorization, as we no longer need to grab our wallet and extract the card to input its long chain of numbers. How do you know we haven't reserved that space for some other, more useful, knowledge, Nintendo? Like ... how long is the perfect time to cook a burrito in the microwave. That's knowledge that was fought for, and won! Many burritos gave their lives to provide us with that information ...
Take those two cents of yours and toss 'em right in! What bugs you about the Wii?

3) Lack of AAA quality games coming from anyone but Nintendo, for the most part
4) The Wiimote is pretty gimped as a general use controller. If it had '3' and '4' buttons and an analog stick where the speaker is, you could do SO much more with it.

Ditto Chicago_Josh on the HD space. My Opera Browser crashed b/c of lack of RAM for cache space. In addition, another peeve of mine is the lack of multiplayer madness in (e.g. Blazing Angels) where on other consoles the game was made for (i.e. 16 people over internet connection). Argh, Nintendo. Argh. I gotta know what those USB ports can do! I want an external HD for the Wii! SD cards are annoying.

The Wiimote isn't sensitive enough and is hard to hold pointing directly at the screen as in CoD4.

How about the heat the console puts off while in standy/WiiConnect 24 mode? My brothers and I use it to send stuff back and forth all the time, else I'd just turn it off. Hope that if something ever fails because of it, it does so before the warranty is up!

1. After the firmware update I have to reconnect my wireless access on my laptop after going online with my Wii.
2. Lack of any really interesting Wii Channels (so far. Fingers crossed).

For the record, Ghen, the Wiimote works just fine as an FPS controller as long as the game is designed correctly (i.e. Resident Evil 4)...
Personally, now that I've taken the Wii on vacation a few times, it would have been nice to have it play DVDs. That, and I'll second/third the Friend Codes complaint!

Lack of any online headset for online play, if I'm playnig my friends online I want to be able to chat with them, otherwise it's just like playing single player.
I can understand Nintendos concerns about abuse but surely it wouldn't be hard to add an optional voice comm block into the parental control section. That way if you prefer to play in silence it's optional rather than forced.
Please make an announcement before Battalion Wars 2, online co-op without communication will spoil it completely, bet we'll just get a few preset text messages to choose from when communicating with out friends :(

Lack of games. VC games are the best downloads on any console, but the selection of retail games is awful, especially in Europe.
The whole online gaming experience is a joke. I can appreciate that it costs money to run servers, but did Nintendo deliberately engineer the 'friend code' to actually stop people from connecting with other Wii users? I have three friends who own Wiis and I gave up tryining to connect to them. Even after successfully entering the friend codes, exchanging Miis, messages etc was horribly painful. And it's not like I can actually play any games with them anyway.
Inconsistent UI design between channels. This is a minor peeve, but shouldn't there be some sort of unified design template for the channels, at least to keep the Wii Menu button in the same place and with the same design?
No support for 720p. I can live without 720p in games, but browsing the Wii news/weather/internet/photo channels is extremely frustrating in 480p. Nintendo created an incredible interface for the Wii and then let themselves down with the display.
Sure, that last one isn't going to happen, but the first three issues are all fixable. The games will come now that developer confidence in the platform has been well and truly established. It's up to Nintendo to fix the online experience, and hopefully they're just waiting for that one killer game to implement it (Mario Kart?).

I have to say that the "Gamecube" support is somewhat lacking. I normally wouldn't have cared because I didn't have any Gamecube games or accessories before but since there has been such a lack of games for the Wii (good ones anyway) I decided to get the Gamecube Metroid Prime and MP2 so I would be ready for MP3 when it comes out.
This has resulted in me having to go out and get another freaking controller and a memory card when I already have a "classic controller" that has all the same buttons that the Gamecube controller does - yet doesn't work with the Wii in Gamecube mode. This is ridiculous.
I understand that the built in Gamecube chip doesn't recognize the bluetooth wireless that the Wii remote sends it but there could have been an easier way to make it so that we could still use the Classic Controller. I imagine a simple "Classic Controller Bluetooth Reciever" plugged into the gamecube controller port would allow you to do just that, but instead they want us to buy up all of their old GameCube inventory.

Third-party games are half-assed made, and I'm not only talking about the ports.I guess I would of complained about the consistency of good games, but since we're getting MP3 this month, Bwii in Oct., Galaxy in Nov, and most importantly, brawl in Dec, I can't really say anything... but that lineup is flippin sweet, and Nintendo should just focus on the games...and not just for the causal crowd*stares down wiifit*

From online play, to the VC, to the rudimentary web browser, Nintendo really has allot of work to do on their whole online setup.
Nothing warrants more work (IMO) than the VC. This thing has been a complete bore since launch. Not only are the games that I played to death in childhood not as good as I remember, but they're relatively expensive when you consider that you can get most of them (ROMs) for free on your computer.
As they already have the perfect controller for it, I want to see some old arcade style light gun games on the VC. You know, T2, Operation Wolf, and more than anything Chiller. This generation horror (Hostel, Saw, and the like) fans will LOVE Chiller: the 80s most disturbing bit of programming outside of Custer's Revenge. But perhaps Chiller would be rated AO if it came out these days.
Which brings me to my second complaint. I thought the Wii was supposed to expand the market and have games for everyone from innocent children to the sick and depraved. I thought for sure with such interesting controls, that we were going to see more mature games launch on the Wii (and perhaps inspire the other big 2 to support AO rated games) but with the recent backslap to Manhunt 2, I'm really not expecting much of anything new now. In fact, the only thing I'm looking forward to now on the machine are the old standards (Mario, Metroid, and... well... what else?) and I know that's going to get old quick. And it's not just the super-violent adult games like Manhunt and GTA that will make me happy I still build my computer for games but the raunchy dating sim games my wife likes so much could reach whole new levels of craziness on the Wii, it's a shame that they plan to deprive us of that.
So what I'm trying to say here is that while the few games that I have for the Wii are fun and I'm sure the stuff coming out in another year or so will be even better, I can't help but be disappointed at the limits Nintendo has put on themselves and us.

Probably echoing everyone else but here goes:
The 512 Memory limit. I'm past full on that, and redownloading is a pain.
Lack of GOOD 3rd Party games. I'm sick of minigames and PS2 ports.
Lack of decent online. This includes the Friend Code thing, but more options would be nice. Pokemon Battle Revolution is about as barebones as online can get.
Lack of Keyboard support for the Browser.
Lack of Leaderboards for VC games.
Modification of games like Wave Race, Devil's Crush, etc. If the point is to give you the classics as they were, DON'T CHANGE THEM!

Interesting points people are making, I have often wondered about the various features of the Wii, what people are actually trying to use.
1. Internet Browsing - simply unusable in my opinion. I do quite a bit of work on the internet daily, I simply don't have the patience to use the wiimote to navigate and type letters in one at a time. A wireless keyboard would be OUTSTANDING.
2. Friend codes, simply put, are something that needs to be brought back to formula. I don't know if this is something done to keep costs down, or to protect the kiddies from online idiots, but online games are ridiculous to try to play because of them.
The rest of the stuff people mentioned, like a uniform template, the resolution and stuff, doesn't bother me. I bought the product for the game play and group experience, I am not a big graphics guy. I have seen the other systems and don't get me wrong, the graphics are amazing, but if I had to choose between playing the next Zelda or getting a game on the 360 that has amazing graphics, I am going the Zelda route. (which is exactly what nintendo wants and was thinking, I know I know).
The lack of DVD support, I have never used my systems as DVD players, all though I do see the application for college students, travel, vacations etc. MP3 support doesn't bother me, the last time I played music through a system while I was playing games was with the old Turbo Grafix 16 console, I had some two on two hockey game and I used to play Van Halen through it while I played. Very cool, but I don't have an application for that anymore because I enjoy the sound through the games.

Surprisingly little, but the same old stuff as everyone else - lack of harddrive space and laggy online play.
I haven't had a game drought and I'm probably one of the few that sees the genius in Friend Codes. Lack of online leaderboards and chat doesn't really bother me. And I have had no problems with the hardware or remote; actually, I laugh at the people that think the remote is supposed to be pointed directly at the spot on screen and then complain that it doesn't work that way. It's a freaking gyro mouse not a lightgun, people!
I think the thing about the Wii is that it was so hyped up and it has continued to be hyped in the media that many people expect everything that the 360 is offering plus more. Compared to the 360 and PS3, the Wii's feature set looks weak. But compared to the last Nintendo console, Wii is a huge step in the right direction. Hopefully Nintendo will improve on some of these issues through firmware updates and such, but a lot of them will probably be saved for Wii v2.
The next Wii Warm Up should be predictions about Nintendo's next console. I'll throw mine out there - announced in 2011 for release in 2012, Wii Gen2 will have the power of the 360 in a Wii case, HD output, 80GB HDD, and improved Remote+Nunchuk for $249.

I'm dissapointed that the Wii doesn't have as cool a download service as XBOX 360. There's the obvious reason that it doesn't have a hard drive... but c'mon... Demos would surely increase sales.
It seems to me they really missed a trick here. I wouldn't mind my Wii being a few millimetres bigger to accommodate a laptop hard disk...
One killer app that I would love to have would be iTunes Shared Music Support. All the macs in my house have a music library, and they all share between each other - but it would be nice to be able to pick it up on the tv as well.
Increased DS support would be cool. I'm not really sure what, but perhaps some minigames you could play with 1 or more DS's and 1 or more Wiimotes...?

1) Hi Def. To be honest I never thought this would be an issue for me, but I find myself wanting to play certain games on my 360 rather than Wii because they're prettier. It doesn't help that developers are being lazy with the graphics on games. Tiger Woods 07 (& 08 apparently) are sad they look so bad.
2) Hard Drive support. Iexpect this to be fixed in a future update though. Expect Nintendo to realize how much money they can make on a Wii branded USB HDD.
3) Friend Codes. 'nuff said.

-Lack of MP3 player. i have my wii hooked up to my stereo. why can't i take advantage of this? if they want the wii to be the center of everyones attention, the focus of fun and entertainment for the family, i dont see why the last 2 things i mentioned aren't included. A simple firmware update would make me very happy.
Besides those things, i love my wii, and will continue to support nintendo in everything they are doing with it.

Also, Opera crashes when you try to play large flash files. I wanted to try a "Speed Test" to see how goog Nintendo's Wifi connection was, but it crashed.
Lack of online gaming until right now...(Though I do love Strikers, how long did it take? Come on...)
Lack of effort. Why are we getting games that we barely accepted for GameCube, PS2, and Xbox? Especially in terms of their graphics, but also in lakc of polish overall.
That's most of it--I'm still happy with my console, but if I played more games, I'd be disappointed with my purchase.

Wow, where to begin. I do love my DS but as for my Wii I am tired of "playing" Everybody Votes. There is a lack of non-minigame games with few titles to look forward to this year (try to name more than a handful). The online play is non-existent and I was never blown away by the over-priced VC retro games. I was hoping for some value priced packs of like Mario or Zelda games and got gouged for an emulator port. At least the 360 enhances the graphics on their retro stuff plus offers original titles. I do not understand the Wii success really except it is a cheaper console that skews for a younger audience.....like Gamecube was except with waggle control. Guess that makes all the difference in terms of selling it or maybe it is the ipod white color.

1) I wish the gamecube controller could be used to navigate the channels menu- it would be more convenient for playing gamecube games on wii if I didn't have to pick up the Wiimote just to select disc channel. Plus, if SSBB is going to have a gamecube controller option, the same issue would exist for players who choose that control scheme.
2) Could DVD playback be added with a software update like someone else mentioned? That would make me very happy.

Lack of true Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Surely Dolby Pro-Logic has gone the way of the Do-Do by now!
Also lack of great games, how many times can one play Resident Evil 4? I love sports games and shooters, don't like Mario and Zelda much unfortunately, but what I do love is the Wiimote and Nunchuck combination, an outstanding achievement to keep games as intuitive and immersive as possible.

1. No Hard Drive. This is something I really didn't realize was lacking so much until I look at my 360 and see all my downloaded XBLA Games, Demos, Music, and Game Previews on it. Why haven't I been able to play ONE Wii demo since the system has come out? With so many crappy 3rd party games, I'd pay for a HDD Add-On to try them out before getting suckered in to wasting my time getting it from Gamefly or wasting my money renting or buying it.
2. No 720p or higher support. Most people won't have this complaint, but I just bought a new HDTV that goes up to 1080i. And my 360 looks very nice and sharp (I need to stop comparing these systems), but my Wii, quite frankly, looks like crap in 480p. When characters are large or close to the screen, they look pretty clear and crisp, but far away enemies and characters just look like piles of pixels in Zelda or RE4. I was pretty suprised to see these games look so bad. Now, I believe their is some hope for future games because Mario Strikers, the newest game from Nintendo, looks pretty decent, and I hope Galaxy and Smash Bros look decent too.
3. DVD Support. I say this only as a matter of convenience. I'm going on vacation next week, my family and I are renting a beach house and I wanted to bring the Wii because we all love Wii Bowling. However, we also want to watch movies and the place doesn't have a DVD player, so we need to bring that too.
4. Online Gaming. Can't say anything that hasn't already been said.
5. Connecting Controllers. Why is it such a pain in the ass to connect my controllers to my friend's Wii? Why do we need to pause the game and go to the menu and then connect each controller one at a time? Why can't I just press 1 & 2 together or something and connect to their Wii at anytime? That would be so much simpler!
I guess that's it for now, most of my other gripes are about Gamecube games that don't have widescreen support, but that's another whining for another day.

I can't believe only one person has mentioned the annoying-ness of the Wii remotes. It seems like they memorize which position they are in - I typically use one remote as my main one, and even when I turn the system off and turn it back on, pick up a different remote and try to play, it won't work. I have to go back and pick up the other remote that I originally used as the first player. Why does it remember its position?! The "first player" should be the first remote active for the system when it starts up!
Another incredibly annoying thing about the wii remotes is when you are setting up a multiplayer mode. Why do I have to go into a separate screen and press buttons 1 and 2 together repeatedly, usually taking up to 30 seconds for the Wii to recognize an additional remote? Why not just automatically check for additional active remotes or bring that screen up automatically when I press 2 players?!

right now? it's simply a lack of software targetted for a mature audience, with a depth of gameplay. i enjoy the casual games as much as anybody, and understand they're a huge cash cow. and I know mario will offer a depth of gameplay, and I know metroid will offer a more mature storyline too. but I'm eager for a totally new title, maybe even a third party title, that takes advantage of the hardware and still pushes the envelope on story and depth.

If and when I repeat anyone's previous comments, just consider that my vote in referendum on those complaints:
1) I hate having to buy separate component cables just to get frickin' 480p.
2) I hate that not only does Wii Shop Channel fail to save my credit card #, it outright refuses to accept ANY of my credit card #s to purchase points! Even Microsoft got this right, I make purchases on the 360 all the time. But if I want Wii Points, I have to schlep it to GameStop for a card.
3) I hate my f'ed up 2nd Wiimote that a) refuses to synch with the Wii as Player 1 and b) sometimes refuses to synch with the Wii at all.
4) I hate friend codes and the multiplayer setup in general, especially compared to Xbox Live.
5) I hate that my Wiimote can turn the Wii off, but not on. What's up with that?
That's about it. I have a few dislikes and strong dislikes, but only for 5 hates.

Its like they need to make a Wii: Pimped Edition. I wouldn't mind them adding Gameboy VC games (by gameboy, all the gameboy platforms) I also would like to see them update some of the Virtual Console games, like improved graphics/etc... Yeah, and I'm not too hot for most of the 3rd party games I've seen. I haven't tried RE:4 yet though. Also I am looking forward to their "Player's Choice" line for cheaper games, if ever. Plus the ability to receive free WiiPoints would be nice. I know this would be asking a lot, but many of us have extensive nintendo/snes/n64 libraries, it would be totally awesome if nintendo created some sort of USB device that you could put those old cartridges on and get the game stored on your Wii, thus making me not feel so stupid about spending $5-$8 on getting a game that I already have, if I just were to actually hook up my older systems.

It surprises me that most people object to the FC thingy. What's the matter with registering your 16 digits where it's appropriate?
My complaints so far are:
1) No decent A/V outputs:
a) Only Nintendo-branded proprietary cables are possible - why no standard S-Video/RCA connectors, so I can use better (IXOS) cables?
b) no digital outputs for either audio or video (this is a *real* bummer AFAIC)
2) No online capability in their Wii killer-app (Wii Sports) - heck, no online support in any interesting game;
3) No (free) game trials to get from the Wii shop

honestly, i pretty much only use my Wii for VC games.. the only halfway decent Wii game is Resident Evil 4.
I dont give a rats ass about DVD (and neither should you.. seriously, who doesnt have a DVD player already?)
A HDD is unneccisary. VC games take up nothing.. if you run out of space, just delete those games you never play *Cough* donkey kong *cough*
IM OVER MOTION CONTROLS.
I actually dont mind the opera browser.. as long as i dont have to type.

For anyone hating the Friend Codes business, I'm doing my best to improve 'online play' with Wiilationships.com a site dedicated in part to sharing those codes to build up rings of friends for use, with each title supporting online play as its released. At least until Nintendo gets their head out of their ass and simplifies the procedure.
I too, hate the fact that there's no DVD aspect of it. But also respect that, since they didn't gouge the shit out of me for a 'superior' new DVD player a la PS3.
My biggest complain though, is simply the ports. It's easier to get a GamePass from Blockbuster, than buy shitty version after shitty version of games that kick ass on other systems.
Still love my wii though.

@Czaries: You have only temp-synced your remotes - that's why you're having to go into the sync screen and hit 1-2. That's mainly for when you take your remote to someone else's Wii and want to temporarily sync your remotes to their system.
You want to hard sync them to your Wii. Open the battery compartment for the remote and press the red button. Then press the red button on the Wii behind the SD card door flap. That will hard sync that remote to your specific Wii. Do that for each of your remotes. I have 4 remotes and have never gone to that temp sync screen where you press 1-2.

The resolution is pitiful... you can leave the games in 480p but at least upscale them so that when i browse the net it is in 720p!

Personally, the only complaint is the lack of good 3rd party games, and the online community thing, the latter isnt as much of a big deal.
For those that are complaining about VC games, they are emulated, they arent meant to be online play, for those that want them improved? Why, the point of the games are to played them as they were when the games first came out.
For the 512 MB storage space, yea, ill agree, 512 MB of memory isnt enough in today's world, but it is sufficient.
For those comparing the wii to the 360, realize this, the 360 costs quite a bit more for what it has, moreover, the online community of the 360 costs money, remember? The wii's online service is free, they are focusing on releasing multiple good games, rather than having a few bombshell games.
Ill agree that the numerous ports on the market are ruining the consoles PR, but once all ports are been and done, new games are starting to come out, look at the FULL fall lineup, not jus 1st party titles.
as for the controller problems, people, you do realize that this controller isnt connecting on the same tech as the 360 controller, this one is bluetooth, which connects differently from regular wireless. And you can use any controller to connect to the console, i dunno what kinda problem you're having dude.
As for 720p, realize this, why do u think 360 costs more? the higher end graphics chip, that is what allows 720p, so if u a wii with 720p, it would be no different from a 360...
The wii is what it is because it takes a different route from all the other consoles...

My biggest frustration at this point is that Nintendo sold us on the hardware and the control scheme, but now they (and 3rd party devs) aren't following up on the massive success of the Wii with anything substantial. Don't get me wrong, RE:4, MP:3, Super Paper Mario, and others are/going to be great games, but I'm not seeing any real innovation past the control scheme. Give me the equivelent that Pikmin was to the GC. I mean, when the majority of games being played on my Wii are GC games you know somethings wrong. It's not that I don't love you big N, just remind me why I do....

I don't care if it doesn't play DVDs cuz i already got a good divx dvd player. Heres some of the issues that i hate.
- loading times on the shop channel
- it would be cool if u can post ur highscores online when playing VC games
- no communication with online games
- wiiconnect24 heats my wii so i turned off standby mode
- i HATE buying extra needs like the nunchuk to complete the wiimote
other than that i still love the wii!

1) Lack of LAN play. The thing has frickin' wireless built in. Why can't I throw three or four Wii's in a house/dorm/apartment building, have them all discover each other and play some racing, FPS, or other mulitplayer games.
2) Lack of Dolby Digital.
3) Lack of Bluetooth device support - keyboard, mic, & headphones
The Wii has some nice tech in it (USB, Bluetooth, 802.11) but it's not being exploited anywhere near what it could be.

I enjoy the wii but I play GC games more on the wii then wii games. There is just a lack of good games to play there about 10+ games I am gonna buy for my 360 and only about 5 for my wii which aren't coming for awhile. Also being a 360 owner I expect online play to be included with almost every game(with a few exceptions MP3) no one wants to play by themselves. SSBB better have online and Mario Galaxy maybe some kind of online co-op because it has been confirmed as off-line co-op. These games are first party exclusives make them better with online. With every nintrendo game I play I enjoy the campaign but after I beat it it goes back to the shelf where it ultimately remains. Online capabilities give incentives to continue playing the game
