WiiControl keeps your console cool

Though Nintendo UK denies that it has received any reports of Wiis being bricked due to the WiiConnect24 service, you can never be too safe with any $200+ investment. Xtremetuner has created a hardware mod with the specific intention of guarding the console from overheating while it is in standby mode.

WiiControl acts as an external interface that monitors and displays the temperature of the system on its LCD screen. When the mod detects temperatures beyond 35°C, it automatically activates the Wii's fan, even in standby mode. An audio warning will also notify the user if the temperature ever exceeds 44°C. The fan is disabled once the console has cooled down to 30°C. Check past the post break for a video demonstration.

rather than voiding my warranty by installing a hardware mod, i would rather have the system "brick" itself and have nintendo do the warranty repair. maybe after the warranty period is over would i consider something like this...

I second it's not worth voiding the warranty for a non-issue. Also if your console is getting that hot you'd think you've got more problems to worry about. I mean if it really does get that hot it's not going to be in good condition even with the fan running. Make sure it gets proper ventilation. Turn off WiiConnect24 if you're too conspiratorial. And remember Nintendo's customer service is real good so they can replace your console and transfer Wii points, VC games, and saves and everything over to the replacement.

And if this was UK and they are modding them and get bricked... Pirates wore eye patches for night vision.

The Wii has a 1 year plus warranty so if Nintendo's going to release shoddy hardware then let them be responsible for the consequences.

from what i recall, if your wii ends up getting trashed from overheating on warranty, nintendo will fix it and this will prevent future overheating issues, correct?

I sent my wii in a month ago because of that overheating issue. they sent me a brand new wii and gave me a brand new 1 year warranty. if it breaks down in that time again I'll just send it in again. Maybe once the warranty ends I might do something like this, but I dunno.

Being that the Wii uses 10w in idle and only 7w more during game play you’re talking a small 17 watts of max power the Wii pulls. Assuming 100% of that power converts straight to heat (in reality, only maybe 5-10%) that’s 58 BTU/Hr about equivalent to the heat output of a candle. Any processor out there can handle at least 160 deg F. If someone can prove to me that they can heat water up to 160 deg F with just a candle given that the surface area is the same as a Wii and has the same size fan blowing over it, then I might believe that the Wii can over heat. Until then I don’t see a reason to buy any of these add-ons to cool the system.
