Wii Warm Up: On Metroid
Yesterday, we discussed what other games you might be interested in, but today we thought we'd get back to one of the heavy hitters -- specifically, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. We know a lot of people are disappointed with some of the development decisions (like no online multiplayer), while others are excited for this game like no other. Where do you fall in the spectrum? Do you think this is a purchase for you, or perhaps a rental ... or might you skip it altogether?

before they announced no online multiplayer I was as hyped for this game as any other gamer on the planet. Now without said multiplayer features I don't think this game can make the cut for me this year due to the many other great games on the horizon.
WhoDey @ Jul 29th 2007 10:30AM
Definite buy on Day 1 for me. This is the first game I'll be buying on release since Super Paper Mario. There are other Wii games out I'd like to play but I'm waiting for price drops. Not for this one.
I'm sure I'm in the minority but I'm glad they chose to cut the online aspect of this game because I can't connect anyway. More time spent on the solo experience and less time spent on the multiplayer is always beneficial to me since 99.5% of my gaming time is spend playing solo. I'm looking forward to it.
Chris @ Jul 29th 2007 10:42AM
Multiplayer would have sucked. I played it on MP2 twice, and that was when I first got the game. Maybe someday we'll live in a world with good Nintendo online capabilities, but we don't right now, so why not bask in what we DO have?
MP3 is going to be amazing for the controls. And from what I've seen, it'll be the first Wii game to do the controls justice. Day 1 purchase.
Hunter @ Jul 29th 2007 11:08AM
I put in for my preorder yesterday. The lack of online does not really bother me because if the game was not built without it in mind and it was tacked on after it would have blown. I find it interesting that everyone got that bent out of shape, but Bioshock which everyone is drooling over (with good reason) does not have mulitplayer either. Both games are story driven action adventure games that just happen to be told in the first person. Just because a game is and FPS does not mean it has to try to be Halo.
Hunter @ Jul 29th 2007 11:09AM
Edit that should have read "with it in mind"
mirage @ Jul 29th 2007 11:09AM
Back in my day, I used to have to walk 20 miles in the snow to get to school. That was uphill you know! Oh! Multiplayer? Maybe one of you kids can tell me how THAT works sometime because we couldn't fathom such a thing as multiplayer Metroid. No, back in my day it was all about the single player story experience. The game had to immerse the player in the environments and the gameplay. I literally BECAME Samus Aran (until I found out about the boobs anyways) and the thought of playing against another never even crossed my mind. That is all.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 29th 2007 11:20AM
I wonder if they'll ever put Justin Bailey as an Easter egg in her games. Yeah I'll buy it, should find MP2:E first though.
tenaciousscott @ Jul 30th 2007 12:51AM
I wont buy it. Ill get a copy free from nintendo. One of the perks of being a GameStop manager. I already have a free copy of Strikers charged and its very good, if your looking for a title with great online and off line multi player Strikers is a must buy.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Jul 29th 2007 11:29AM
I wonder did they got rid off of the silly timed missions. That was 2nd most annoying part of Metroid game on DS.
Also as huge PC FPS fan, I can't live w/o instant load/save. But seems like you console people used to suck with the "same rooms" or whatever. Will have to see how it would be in game. (Instant save is needed if something had popped up and you can't play anymore right now. Well, adult life, you know.)
1st the most annoying part of Metroid games is - boss fights. I'm not sure why console games still stick to the crappiness. But that's precisely why I avoid "serous games:" you just can't turn it on and enjoy yourself for 30-60 minutes. Boss fights are hardly enjoyable and with limited time I have for gaming really impose *huge* barrier to any game.
In Wii's Zelda, boss fights were easy. Yet often they had barred me from playing it for weeks: "Oh my. I have to fight boss and I will not make it tonight. Probably some other time."
I dropped many games that way: I got stuck somewhere, had no time to look for way out and later on forgot controls or even that I played the game.
And that's why I'm really saddened that there is no MP. With MP, I can turn it on any time, get on-line, shoot some guys, get shot by some guys and turn it off. Quick sweet piece of unbound action. Any time *I* like.
Rico @ Jul 29th 2007 1:19PM
I have to laugh at Justino who says he's no longer excited for the game because it lacks online multiplayer. I feel the opposite - removing the tacked-on multiplayer (especially with the headaches of co-ordinating games over the internet) frees up resources to concentrate on what people really care about: the single player experience.
There are plenty of other games that are focused on multiplayer and lend themselves much better to online play (although few, I'll concede, are on the Wii)
Vohaul 79 @ Jul 29th 2007 11:35AM
Metroid never was, and never should, be about online multiplayer. Slapping it into MP2 was a slap in the face. Please Nintedo, don't make Metroid another FPS / Halo clone. There are plenty of FPshooter / fragathons out there, don't ruin the unique character of this game by making it one.
I applauded Nintendo for making MP1 SPECIFICALLY non FPS, and used a unique control style to try and avoid this confusion.
Will be buying Day 1
djbuhhda @ Jul 29th 2007 11:47AM
i say. sounds kinda kool but without online multiplayer WTF is the point. does it have splitscreen so that i can look at my enemies screen while i kill him. i just think that nintendo needs to go will the kool crowd (Microsoft) and do every good game that should have online, ONLINE.
Krandle @ Jul 29th 2007 12:25PM
Preorderd and buying day one
You people who are complaining about no online multiplayer in MP3 are missing the whole point of the Metroid series, a deep and engrosing single player experience. I agree with Vohaul, MP2's multiplayer felt tacked on and sloppy. Also, consider MP Hunters for DS. The empahsis was on multiplayer which resulted in a boring repetitive single player campaign. Metroid does not need to be turned into a Halo clone. Let another original IP do that job, not Metroid. If you want a massive FPS online game for Wii, go see the next Medal of Honor, because THOSE types of games are appropriate for online multiplayer, Metroid is not. And don't say that Nintendo is hurting the franchise because they're not including online because neither Prime game before needed it to be successful.
Unless Retro or NTS decides to focus on a multiplayer only Wii title, Metroid will and should remain what it is, an atmospheric epic single player affair. That's what has made the franchise successful for years folks.
zeldazeppelin @ Dec 25th 2007 12:12PM
This will be better without multiplayer
elmer @ Jul 29th 2007 12:52PM
I don't think anyone demanding multiplayer understands the first thing about METROID.
I mean, it's like not buying a book about loneliness because the writers won't let you read it in a book group.
OK, bad example.
Anyway, I wrote this on Infendo:
"The problem is there are no decent alternative FPSs on the horizon for Wii (thanks a lot all you 3rd party bastards) so we all look to Metroid, but any sort of multiplayer doesn’t really work in the Metroid Universe. It’s about loneliness, not bombastic swearing at your ‘bud’. The weapons are Boss oriented energy beams designed to wear the enemy down, not for a 20 second life between frags. The atmosphere is about eerie alien environments, not blood stained war trenches."
If you ever played and loved a Metroid game, you'd understand why it isn't a fit. Hunters does work, but it's a completely different game.
Just_a_guy @ Jul 29th 2007 1:02PM
Now that they have finally confirmed that they are working only on 1 player mode, I know this game will be better than ever...
Am I one of the only people who actually doesn't want to play multi player because I have MPH?
Jared @ Jul 29th 2007 1:17PM
perhaps preordering, def picking up though; i don't normally preorder games, too lazy.
Mr Khan @ Jul 29th 2007 1:18PM
Elmer's right
While Metroid Prime Hunters was fun, it was fun because it was tailor-made to include online, the way Metroid is constructed for consoles you have too much health and inappropriate weapons to make a fast-paced, thrilling online experience (that's why games like Halo have those wimpy shields, quick kills in a dog-eat-dog world make for a more fun experience than having 1500 Energy points)
But Metroid is my favorite franchise, so this game would be a no-brainer either way. I'm incredibly amped, but saddened by the 1 week delay, which puts it at the second day of my Senior year for me, but then again i'll have all of labor day weekend to really sink my teeth in
Pedro UK @ Jul 29th 2007 1:33PM
I'm definitely excited about this game and will buy on day one without a doubt. My biggest worry sin't that it doesn't have MP but that it has voice acting - this, to me, offers the biggest risk to the Metroid universe.
As far as multiplayer goes I would like to see Prime Hunters Wii Edition. If I remember rightly there was talk that if MP: H was succesful there would be a continuation of that series and maybe even spinoffs featuring the others bounty hunters...
Michael K. @ Jul 29th 2007 1:50PM
ONLINE MULTIPLAYER IS FOR LOSERS. i was happy when they said that this game wont have multiplayer, this game is too good for it, its not mindless crap like halo.
Chazz @ Jul 29th 2007 2:36PM
I'm not sure about this one. I'm not much of a first person shooter fan. I played the first one and didn't like it, but the new controls kinda make me want to play it.
Soiden @ Jul 29th 2007 2:45PM
Let's see... I don't know why, but some people are going too far [I don't know if it's fanboyism or what]. Online multiplayer is for losers? Pfft.
First, with or without online/multiplayer, I'm buying this Godish game. I enjoyed MP1 and MP2 like heaven, and I'm sure MP3 will be the best of the trilogy.
Second, the lack of multi can, in fact, means that the single player is better than with a multi option. BUT I wouldn't complain if there's one.
Third, why are you so insane with the 'metroid-is-not-multiplayer' idea? Before Metroid Prime Came out, almost everyone thought it was a bad idea, that the Metroid universe was in doom, that they wouldn't play that game, ever. An FPS Metroid? That idea sounded very strange some years ago. But they released the FPS Metroid, and what happened? OMG what a great game! And it won the place of best game of the year! Well, some said Metroid was a platformer in 2D, and that an 3D FPS would kill the franchise. Today is bigger than ever.
Now, someone tell me, could an online multiplayer option kill the game? Kill the single player mode? kill the Metroid universe? I say NO WAY! It could even make it bigger than now. An Online Multi Metroid, now sounds strange, but in the future, it would sound great and normal.
I'm sad there's no multi option, but I want this game, I want it very very much.
Mr Khan @ Jul 29th 2007 2:56PM
I also agree with Soiden. There's nothing keeping the two from co-existing, but like i said before, it wouldn't work with THIS game, because it hasn't been constructed with multiplayer in mind, and lacks certain elements to make a really thrilling multiplayer mode
stephen @ Jul 29th 2007 3:42PM
Metroid Prime Hunters 2 aka metroid prime 2.5 (as Hunters was metroid prime 1.5) This is the best option, i say E for all may unveil it.
Slack @ Jul 29th 2007 3:46PM
I'm glad there isn't an online version *YET*, because thats one less thing you vaginas are likely to bitch about.
Spencer @ Jul 29th 2007 4:12PM
I really want this game! But I don't think my dad will let me get it, he hates FPS games...
samfish @ Jul 29th 2007 4:14PM
I'm not a fan of FPS style games, so in all probability, I'll be passing on Metroid.
There's a chance that I'll end up buying it anyway, out of sheer morbid curiosity of the new control scheme...but it's not exactly a launch-day purchase for me, either way.
todde7 @ Jul 29th 2007 4:46PM
Foolish people Metroid has and always should be a "Single" player game. That's like saying Zelda should be online multiplayer (although that would be kinda sweet). Echoes multiplayer was stupid and to say that this game wont be worth it for just single player is majorly stupid. Has anyone played Metroid Prime before??? OMG one of the best games of all time and guess what? It's only single player. Morons!
mian @ Jul 29th 2007 4:56PM
I wouldn't be willing to shell out $50 for it, considering the lack of online, but I'm thinking about getting as my free game from VGL: http://www.videogamelagoon.com/?ref=65048
It's a shame the best FPS controls on any system can't be used in multiplayer combat, but I suppose I still want to try them out. A little.
Taino @ Jul 29th 2007 5:25PM
must buy!!!
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Jul 29th 2007 5:26PM
I do not understand what people have against MP.
All you need a screens for (1) your appearance selection and (2) map/level selection.
You jump on level with all guns enabled. Energy is capped at say 100 points. Who kills - scores point. That's it. Nothing more.
FPS's MP didn't changed much since times of Hexen and Doom2.
But of course maps have to be specifically created. Or (usual to Metroid) force fields need to limit players to some contained place - so there is no running away ;)
Compared to SP, MP is really easy to implement.
[ I might guess that Nintendo, now riding on wave of family entertainment, doesn't want to get into "killer games", as they are called now. ]
[ Or they try to save some money on servers which would be needed to connect MP players. ]
Even if MP in MP1 and MP2 sucked - it wouldn't harm to try to redo it again.
IntelligentIdiot @ Jul 29th 2007 5:49PM
todde7: "That's like saying Zelda should be online multiplayer"
Phantom Hourglass, anyone?
Anyway, I'll definitely end up preordering this and buying it on day 1.
David Kearns @ Jul 29th 2007 6:13PM
It's why I have a Wii, of course I'll buy it. But then I'm a bit of a fan boy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dkfour/376822630/
AzaMcWazza @ Jul 29th 2007 6:16PM
When I discovered Metroid for the first time (Prime) I was amazing at how great this game was. Even though I'd been playing FPS games for years before that on the PC and consoles.
All the previews of this games suggest it's going to be awesome. This is a day 1 buy for me.
A Rusty Butter Knife @ Jul 29th 2007 7:01PM
I'm going to buy it on day one. Both of the preceeding MP titles have been jaw-droppingly fantastic. It's still a disappointment not to have online multiplayer though, considering Nintendo's claim that this game has the best FPS controls of any game that's come out... if the controls are really that good, online multiplayer ought to make this a killer app; a great way for Nintendo to sell Wiis to the hardcore crowd.
Rich @ Jul 29th 2007 7:07PM
I'm getting it day one. I loved MP:H multiplayer and long for a console version, so I'm hoping they do a second game focusing on multiplayer. But I'm excited as hell for MP3:C.
James @ Jul 29th 2007 8:48PM
Can anybody explain to me why people make asinine posts like #1 up there about Metroid, but nobody ever says stuff like that about (lack of) online multiplayer in Zelda? Or Mario? Or any of a thousand other single-player-only games that are fantastic and wouldn't make any sense with multiplayer? When did people get this crazy idea that they wanted to play Metroid, a game about exploring new worlds, solving evironmental puzzles, and discovering interesting new abilities, as Yet Another Shitty Deathmatch? If somebody could figure out an interesting way to make Metroid co-op -- maybe Samus gets a sidekick, I guess, but I always liked that she works alone -- I could see complaints about promising something like that then dropping it. But no deathmatch? Who the living hell cares?
stephen @ Jul 29th 2007 9:23PM
@ 37
Most every online console showed off its online with a *star* Fps Online Deathmatch game, Microsoft had Halo 2, the Ds had Hunters, Ps3 has Resistance, Wii should use Metroid. Im not as unhappy as someone who only has a wii as ill get Online Deathmatches from the 360 with Halo 3, but what about those who only have a wii? They dont deserve a good First-Party Online FPS Deathmatch? I don't mean MP3, i just mean a console version of hunters.
Matt @ Jul 29th 2007 10:37PM
I'm going to buy it but I might wait to find a deal. The way I figure it, I use GameFly anyway. So, I can hold onto it as long as I want, and when I find a deal, I'll buy/order it, and send back the GameFly one. (Or, if I got an unscathed one, possibly just buy it directly from GameFly with $5 off and 5% off, haha)
`gman @ Jul 29th 2007 10:34PM
I will preorder MP3. I feel it doesn't need multiplayer.
Hey Nintendo can use the MP3 engine to create a spin off MP game designed for brainless multi player action. I'd buy that game too.
Kael @ Jul 30th 2007 1:02AM
I feel ambivalent about Prime 3. I'm glad the Prime games became popular and brought the Metroid name into a more prominent spot in Nintendo's lineup, but it's really the Original Metroid Series' weird little cousin, and it gets all the love these days.
Where's Metroid 5?
matt @ Jul 29th 2007 10:58PM
I'll be picking it up. I still love Super Metroid much more than the Prime series, but the control scheme might win me over. Bring back the Metroid sidescrollers, Nintendo!
Yoshi @ Jul 29th 2007 11:53PM
I'm still going to get it on the first day, I've already put in my pre-order for it, but I am VERY disappointed in the lack of online multiplayer. If Super Smash Brothers Brawl is not online, then the Wii will have failed me...
mattwillis4 @ Jul 31st 2007 4:19AM
I do have to say, the game is awesome. I've been able to play several different build of it at Best Buy achievers events. The controlls are solid, and the gameplay sucks you in quickly. I'm going to be first in line to buy this one.
Grey Acumen @ Jul 30th 2007 2:03AM
I've never been able to really enjoy a FPS before, and I've been waiting to see what the Wii is capable of doing for that at its best. Online play has never been a huge deal for me, so that's really not going to affect my purchase of the game, but I'm also really not terribly concerned about its arrival. I'm more hyped about Brawl.
So I'll be getting it eventually, along with Resident Evil 4, and a bunch of other purchases down the road. Probably most of them will be from ebay or secondhand though.
flameofdoom666 @ Jul 30th 2007 4:25AM
Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes were FANTASTIC games. This will be a day 1 purchase with out a doubt. Multi player in Hunters was good, but they made the game with big rooms specifically for it. I think Metroid Prime 3 Corruption should ONLY be a single player experience. Since the disc size is 4 times that of a Gamecube disc, Metroid Prime 3 Corruption could potentially be a HUGE game. A lot of value! :-)
psyborg @ Jul 30th 2007 5:53AM
If your disappointed about the lack of multiplayer then you don't understand Metroid.
Granted a deep-non-halo-like MP could be made for Metroid but then the game wouldn't be coming out anytime soon.
Day one purchase for me regardless of multiplayer.
g3kg3k @ Jul 30th 2007 6:24PM
I'm just still confused about why Samus is getting SURPRISE BUTTSECKS on the cover there.
Neal Eaton @ Jul 30th 2007 10:23AM
I have already pre-paid for this, so I will be picking up on day 1. I am re-playing MP2:Echos now to get back into the right frame of mind.
No online multiplayer is not a deal breaker for me...but I don't like the FPS deathmatches...they get boring and repetiive very fast.
Metroid has always been about isolationism and exploration. I am sure that this game will blow my socks off for the next few months...and I an really looking forward to it.
soulgrind @ Jul 30th 2007 2:00PM
MP3 never HAD online multiplayer.
MP1/2 had tacked on multiplayer that no-one played and that was a waste of developer resources. Result: everyone complained.
MP3 has no online multiplayer because it wouldn't fit the game and would be a waste of developer resources. Result: Everyone complains.
Poor devs can't win.
I can only imagine that those people complaining that an adventure/platform game doesnt have FPS multiplayer included are people who have NEVER played a metroid game before, and clearly don't even understand what kind of game it is. It is zelda. It is castlevania. it ISN'T halo.
