John Carmack continues to eyeball the DS, considers Quake-style game
After some waffling and then an announcement (as well as a recent re-announcement) of the mobile game Orcs & Elves headed DS-ward, programmer and co-founder of id Software John Carmack is toying with yet another idea for the handheld: a Quake Arena-style game. Carmack offered the system some backhanded compliments while discussing his work on Orcs & Elves, saying that he loved working on the system, but that he noticed a few of what he termed "rookie mistakes." We can only guess that he is talking about issues that came up with the newer features of the DS, because we're pretty sure that Nintendo knows a thing or two about handhelds by now. However, Carmack must have enjoyed himself, because now he's toying with this new idea of a Quake game on the dual screens, so we'll keep an eye out and see what develops.

If he wants to make a Quake-style game, why not just go all-out and give us a QuakeWorld DS? I'd forgive the ancient graphics for the whole "instant QuakeWorld LAN party anywhere" thing.

The "rookie mistakes" he was referring to had to do with the 3D hardware - and Nintendo did make some mistakes there. They aren't new to the handheld business, but they are to 3D handhelds.
Also, Carmack's a little late. QuakeDS, a homebrew project, already supports wireless multiplayer. Of course, Internet wifi would be nice, but we'll see what happens .

Man, let's hope so. It's about time id put out another game that doesn't rely on ridiculous amounts of upgrading. The last time was what, Doom?

C.O.R.E. may beat Carmack to his own punch. I'd love to see Id do a Quake I/II hybrid. A 2 cart game. One for Single Play and one for Multi.
Maybe get Valve on Board and do a Team Fortress Classic game. There's no single player, but GAWD I loved TFC "Cap the Prez"!!! Gotta have Bots right from the start though!

@5 Abscissa:
Doom did require excessive upgrading.

I remember people upping machines for Doom.

Yeah, Castle Wolfenstien pretty much ran fine on most 386s back then. But when Doom came out, everyone wanted a 486 badly. By the end of that time, everyone was pimping 486 DX4 100s and then Quake came out and it was literally 8fps. It made a lot of grown men cry. So the upgrade to Pentium 60s and 90s made life alright for a while. Man, iD really moved a lot of cpu upgrades back then. Pretty amazing.

Not to mention the fact that Quake gave a serious kick in the pants to the then-uncommon dedicated graphics board..
