IGN dislikes MySims, seems to have never played Animal Crossing
Maybe it's us. Maybe we're the ones who just don't get it. But the last time we checked, lots of Nintendo fans enjoy cuteness (hi2u, Kirby!) and the look of Miis, and it doesn't mean we magically became casual gamers overnight. However, to hear IGN tell it, a fondness for anything cute obviously means it's family-friendly ... which these days, seems to be code for "non-hardcore." IGN confirms that theory when, at the bottom of their latest MySims preview -- which is as devoid of actual content as they claim the game to be -- they say, "This isn't likely to be a game that appeals to hardcore gamers, but families will probably enjoy some innocent fun in a creative environment that will provide some interesting challenges and problem solving."
Did we maybe miss a memo about how games can't be fun? Because we like to think of ourselves as pretty hardcore -- we like to sweat and toil and swear our way through hours and hours of gaming of all types -- but we also like to have fun. If MySims is fun, how is it somehow only okay for families and not "real" gamers? The preview doesn't deny the fun factor. And there's no age limit on being a hardcore gamer. So what gives?
We can only guess that the folks at IGN have never heard of a little game called Animal Crossing ... or maybe they just assume that only children want to beat up Tom Nook when he starts asking for his mortgage payments. After all, seems that MySims is pretty much Animal Crossing that trades the animals in for more building elements, and nothing in their preview contradicts that image ... except their idea that "hardcore gamers" won't like it. Personally, we're looking forward to giving it a try. The building elements of The Sims were always fun, and perhaps this new spin will make the actual gameplay more engaging.

I really liked Animal Crossing and I really like the Sims. So if EA is willing to combine the 2 games into something that looks interesting, I'll give it a whorl. I might treat it like a car and wait till I find it used, but I will still try it.
tiamat1990 @ Jul 12th 2007 5:49PM
IGN are idiots. This games looks friggin awesome. It's a game you can play for months.
Nmaster @ Jul 12th 2007 6:14PM
I applaud you Alisha, well put. I couldn't have said it any better...
Alisha Karabinus @ Jul 12th 2007 6:22PM
Why, thank you. Commentary like this just... I don't know. To me, it seems irresponsible and uninformed, and I would like to expect better of IGN. It's one thing to not like the game -- but that doesn't seem to be the case! They don't say anything bad about it, and yet they brush it aside.
oni-link @ Jul 12th 2007 6:26PM
IGN is a dying site/publication that's getting more out of touch with it's core audience. Between Matt's wild/pyscotic claims of playing Halo DS(didn't he say that he was going to bring out proof by E3?)and huge disparity with reviews and previews compared to others in the industry the have lost a lot of credibility in the industry!!!
accidental @ Jul 12th 2007 6:30PM
tiamat1990, how do you know if you haven't played it? Admittedly it does look awesome – especially for Animal Crossing fans – but AC has a very refined 'soul' that really makes the game what it is, if MySims doesn't have that then it will feel like a knock-off.
With a game of this style there isn't much of a goal, think of playing it as kinda like 'getting to know someone'. With AC that 'person' is very likable and genuine. With MySims that 'person' might look cool but when you get to know them they're really quite shallow and faking it.
I guess we'll find out when we play it.

Yeah, "hardcore" gamers won't like it because it's on the Wii, that immasculating device that carries games that you can play with your FAMILY? *GASP* Shun your eyes! Hurry to your $600 George Foreman grills and play any one of your games that makes you feel like a man. Oh that's right, that's ALL of your games. Oh yeah, and shouldn't "hardcore" imply dedication? Like buying a console from a company that not only has been churning out hits for 20+ years, but is STILL revolutionary? Wait, that's not dedication, that's COMMON SENSE! Or you could buy from a company that has been making game machines for 6 or 7 years? Don't get me wrong, I like games that are now considered "hardcore," but only when they're good.
Steve 3.2 @ Jul 12th 2007 7:46PM
The writer, Dan Adams, is from their PC sub-site. He needs to go back to his FPS games and let the regulars handle the Wii games.
Dan @ Jul 12th 2007 7:47PM
"hardcore gamer" doesn't even mean someone who has discriminate taste, looking for interesting game play.
it's funny how "hardcore gamer" has been commandeered and now means "more of the same FPS bullshit".
newsflash: copycat games designed for a specific target market are NOT hardcore.
Kyle @ Jul 12th 2007 8:05PM
Alisha, you are really hitting the nail on the head lately. Hardcore gamers are slagging on Nintendo for new releases that fall outside the traditional boundary of gaming -- but, at the same time, they're celebrating that exact same thing in Guitar Hero and Rock Band, which are totally comprised of peripheral-based minigames. Why is there such a double standard? I think it's because young male gamers feel threatened by anything that targets a broader audience, but I would love to hear your explore this topic in another post.
JC Fletcher @ Jul 12th 2007 8:41PM
IGN != hardcore gamers.
Alisha Karabinus @ Jul 12th 2007 8:54PM
You may get your wish, Kyle... it's something I've been pondering. It seems that since news on the Wii and Wii games first started to materialize as something more than just a concept, there's been a real split -- amongst the media outlets, that is. But is it true for the gamers themselves? I'm not so sure. You do make an awfully good point with regard to the Guitar Hero franchise as well. Why is that okay, when something like this apparently isn't, according to some? Is it because thrashing about with guitars is inherently manly and MySims is cute? I don't think that really reflects the opinions of most gamers, even if it is being printed as truth.

whats with the IGN bashing as of late, they are very
good at what they do and I go to them when its time to
read a review on a game because they are not bias to the
games just because its on wii, and acknowledge the good
and bad things about the system. you can't claim IGN
thinks cute is not equal to hardcore other wise they
wouldn't be pushing zack and wiki as hard as they are.
and as you said IGN never said the game wasn't fun. and
contrary to what you said, the the very qoute you took
from the preview says its "not likely" not that it
won't. I consider myself a hardcore gamer and while the
game may be good, its not something that appeals to me
because it does not fit my taste in gaming, that is what
IGN meant. it seems to me like you just took the first
chance you got to take a stab it them.
and for your information it was IGN who ask Miyamoto-san
when we can expect animal crossing on the wii, and asked
questions that I for one really wanted to get answers to.
if you are going to read there previews looking for
faults maybe you should watch there interviews too.
Geoff @ Jul 13th 2007 9:00AM
your article headline and your writing with in it completely takes IGN's preview out of context. and to all who blasted ign try reading that preview first and see that your auto defense of the game is not needed.
shyam @ Jul 13th 2007 1:11PM
looks like IGN dont like nintendo and the wii, coz they r in love with that brick thats called a ps3
Neil @ Jul 13th 2007 1:40PM
Did you even read the article? I don't take much stock in anything IGN says, but really this post is just IGN bashing and nothing more.
CADreamin @ Jul 13th 2007 7:16PM
IGN.."good at what they do"... please. that place has been on a slide since it merged w Gamespy and now that Perry is gone its lost its way. Hard for them to take that real gamers love the Wii and that Sony's reign is over...
Geoffrey @ Jul 13th 2007 11:55PM

ok your opinion about ign is yours. now how about you go read IGN's preview. and tell me she did not twist one sentence into an out right bash fest. my whole point is that dispite wether you, Alisha or anyone does or does not like IGN. it is outright wrong to blatantly lie about what they write to purposely start a flame war about them.and even more so for alisha seening as how she is a journalist herself.
Wildhalcyon @ Aug 9th 2007 10:25AM
I have to agree - I think the IGN article was largely positive. I do think that their terminal sentence was a little harsh or negative, but overall the folks at IGN are pegging the game as a cute, unique alternative to other sim games. I don't think they're quite as excited as other folks are about the game, but I remember hearing virtually nothing about Animal Crossing before it came out. Now its considered one of the greatest Gamecube games of all time.
