VC Monday Madness wrap-up 7/9/07 [update 1]

Air "Zonk" (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!
Don't let the ridiculous cast of characters, including the game's protagonist, fool you: this game has got it going on. With a quicker tempo than Bonk, the game is more action-packed and helps define the genre, rather than promote its faults as the last few shoot-em-ups for the TG16 have.

Mach Rider (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: download it!
Update: Something we didn't try when playing the game, apparently Wikipedia says the US VC release includes some functionality that was only special to the Japanese release of the game that allowed those with the Famicom Data Recorder to save custom tracks. Now, we can too!
If there's any kind of setting we love most, it's an apocalyptic future set on Earth. As the one and only Mach Rider, players must not only operate a motorcycle (the controls are a bit complex for a NES launch title, asking players to shift gears), but also take down enemies and search for survivors whilst doing so. Overall, the game is pretty fun.

Yoshi (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download
Sure, we've admitted our addiction to puzzle games before, but we have always felt that the definitive puzzle experience on the NES was a war, raging for eternity, between Tetris and Dr. Mario. As such, our opinion of this game is a personal one, and perhaps a bit biased, so take that as you will.
As always, if you have any tips or rumors regarding Nintendo's Virtual Console service, be sure to let us know and come back next week when we take a look at the latest titles available on the Nintendo Wii.

I have a question for ya Dave.
How many games have you bought, for the VC, and do you still have space left?
Just wonderin'
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 9th 2007 4:34PM

Nushio,
As hvnlysoldr said, I ran out last week (or the week before, can't remember). In fact, me and JC were looking at SD card bargains online. If you happen to stumble across any (without ridiculous shipping charges), I'd be happy to hear about it.
Thanks for reading!
Dave

I've found that the better SD (and USB thumbdrive, but that isn't important) bargains are found in brick-and-mortar, once you take shipping into account
I've always liked Mach Rider, it was just another game that SSBM turned me on to (like Ice Climber, Fire Emblem, and Mother)

This VC Monday Madness was certainly not as cool as the ones with video, but, as always, solid job David, and I really appreciate the recommendations. I don't have the kind of money to just toss at any VC game I want, so this weekly feature really gives me something to consider when purchasing games. You guys here at NWFB are awesome. Please keep up the good work.

Yoshi trumps Dr. Mario anyday! I would prefer the NES Tetris myself, but Yoshi is absolutely a contender and can (in my opinion) have a more frantic feel to it along the lines of, say, Puzzle Fighter, in terms of the way the game is played. Plus, I ditched my Gameboy copy when I switched over from SP to DS and I kinda miss it. $5 FTW.
Yoshi (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
I say: download it!

Yoshi was kinda simplistic. Gets old fast.

Jared,
Wow, thank you. I'm glad we here at Wii Fanboy could help you. As always, thanks for reading (and praising)!
Charles,
You make some good points and I love to read what you guys think about the VC games too. Not enough folk disagree/agree with me and explain why in these posts. Thanks!

♫I want Charles in charge of my fist in his face.♫
Dr. Mario is the best.

Damn you Scott Baio, you ruined my childhood!!

Yoshi rules. I never played it when it first came out on the NES, but when I was playing multiplayer with a bunch of friends a few years ago, we hooked up the Yoshi and it RULED. Way more enjoyable than Dr. Mario and totally accessible. I'm not the best puzzle guy, but this was fun and it was fast paced. It's very much like a meteos sort of thing mixed with Puzzle League.
I say download, hell - the game even got me lucky once! How is THAT a bad game???
