Top ten Mario sellout moments (as determined by some guy)
Prepare to put on your angry hat, because we've got quite the ridiculous video for you to watch. As you gathered from the post title, it's the supposed top ten Mario sellout moments. Now, we'll say that Mario did sell out a couple times during his time as Nintendo's mascot, but some of these claims in the video are just downright hilarious. Appearing in Super Smash Bros. is a sellout? Yeah, right!
Sorry, but we can't embed the video, so you'll have to hit the link.

The WORST video I have ever seen. It's not just that I disagree with his list... his list doesn't even make sense. How can Mario be a "sellout" in his own games?
I like'd the intro. That would have been a good video: where has Mario appeared outside of his videogames? But no, this guy had to go and put together the worst Top 10 I've ever seen.
Don't waste your time.

You know, the movie may not be what it should of been, but it was still a dang good movie.

Wow. Did I just watch that? That voice sounded like the guy is past his puberty... but... but... the commentary sounds so idiotic.
"Mike Tyson's Punch Out marks one of the first Mario cameos OUTSIDE of a Mario game..."
AND?! And because Mario's appearance, the game sold well when the game didn't deserve it (sarcasm)?! Is Mario's retirement assured because of the royalty fees he's reaping from VC sales?! Please continue - what's the reason it's a sellout?
That movie was even worse than the first Nintendo Short Cuts video (http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2007/05/24/first-nintendo-short-cuts-entry-uploaded-to-the-tubes)

Horrible movie and the list made no sense.
steve @ Jun 20th 2007 2:04PM
The movie may be a sell out, but it was one of the few good game to movie conversions.

...I can't think of anything to say, except that guy is an idiot.

* I agree with Super Mario Sunshine being on the list.
* I agree with the baby Mario nonsense, but that got even more absurd when Baby Mario started appearing in games with adult Mario. (Don't you hate it when you show up at an event and your baby self is there too?)
* The movie should have been #1
But I would have added:
* Mario being given a terrible, kiddie, Micky Mouse voice that is used way too much.
* Changing the pronunciation of his name from "Ma-rio" to "Mar-eo". I keep waiting for Mar-eo to visit a spanish world where he saves "Princess Mar-eeha" instead of "Princess Ma-ria"

This really wasn't worth watching.
All I can guess is he came up with the concept for a school project and was strapped to find 10 things, then figured that the teacher wouldn't know a thing about Nintendo or video games in general and would let the lack of supporting details slide.
He lists Mario Paint purely because Mario's cap is on sideways in the box art.
He lists Smash bros as a "watered down" fighter, when it's possibly the best fighting game I've ever played, second only to its successor; Smash Bros Melee.
He lists the one DDR game for the Gamecube. Admittedly, I can possibly let the sellout part slide, but DDR is fun, period.
A cameo appearance in punch out as selling out? I don't quite get how that works.
Mario 64 for DS actually does have an analogue stick simulator in its touch screen. It really needed refinement, but again, how does this work for selling out?
As completely out of touch the Movie felt compared to the video game, I actually liked the movie.
I'll let the Doubledash and Mario Sunshine parts slide. I really wasn't satisfied with either of them. Mario Party has its moments, but the times when it randomizes things just pisses me off. Baby Mario was a little irritating, but Yoshi's Island was an incredibly fun game.
Taking all of that and adding his rather emotionless commentary make this a general waste of time.

10. Second they started with Super Mario Sunshine I knew the video was gonna be crappy. Wasn't the greatest game or anything, but DEFINITELY wouldn't crack the top ten worst ones. (How can Mario sell out in his own game?)
9. Super Smash Bros = amazingness, and anyone who argues with that must be stoned (in the sense they're high AND in the sense they must die from stones thrown at them). If that is selling out, then I think Mario definitely should sell out more often.
8. DDR Mario Mix, I definitely understand. Don't get me wrong, I love me some DDR, but why the hell throw Mario in there? Not to mention the difficulty was laughably easy. Mario... stay out of my DDR games.
7. Mike Tyson's Punchout... yeah, that is selling out as well. Did nothing to save the game.
6. Mario Paint, sorta sold out. His reasoning sucks though. Who the eff cares if his hat is sideways on the boxart?
5. Super Mario Bros Movie, obviously was selling out, won't argue there. Barely had anything to do with the Mario games...
4. Mario Party 4... why target 4? He never gave a reason, he just condemned the whole series (the first few were fine, they just make too many now...) Though I don't personally care for 4...
3. Yoshi's Island, great game, shut up. I agree with him that Baby Mario's crying made me want to punch infants. But the game itself was put together well.
2. Super Mario 64 DS... well, once again, how is he selling out in his own game? And definitely wasn't in the top ten worst appearances, I thought the game was well adapted to the DS, despite lacking control sticks.
1. Mario Kart: Double Dash, the worst?!? Yeah right, go screw yourself! That game saved the Mario Kart series (Mario Kart 64 nearly killed it and Mario Kart: Super Circuit didn't do anything to help it), and its only flaw was lacking online play. Which I didn't expect 'cause GameCube wasn't an online system, 'cept for the PSO games. But multiplayer still keeps me entertained, and so many unlockables...
Dax @ Jun 20th 2007 3:19PM
Of course, the big question is: how can a fictional character "sell out" in the first place? Nintendo isn't some obscure indie band, they're a large corporation, "selling out", a.k.a. making a profit, is what they do. If Nintendo didn't try to "sell out" as much as possible, they could go under and cease to exist as a company. And then all the Mario fans would cry.
And Smash Bros. is fun. Now making a relatively simple and fun game is selling out?
orig_club_soda @ Jun 20th 2007 3:25PM
How can a company, who's primary function is to generate revenue, "sellout?"
RupeeClock @ Jun 20th 2007 3:51PM
What the fuck?
Smash Bros?
Mario Paint?
Mario Kart?
Sunshine?
Those are NOT sellouts, no fucking way.
The only worthwhile thing on there was the movie, not even a mention of the awful CD-i game.
This is just way too hard to even agree with.
This isn't a list of selling out, it's some guys list of Mario games he just didn't like, ugh.
Mr Khan @ Jun 20th 2007 4:21PM
I would agree with numbers 8 and 5, Mario DDR was an obvious attempt to appeal to the idiotic mentality that "GameCube owners only buy Nintendo games"
And the Super Mario Bros Movie was just horrible, mostly because of how radically they departed from the game, i would've expected something in a colorful world, not a bad 1980's styled action flick
None of the others; by no means, though. Super Mario Sunshine ruled, they took the basic precepts of 64 and allowed for even more acrobatic free movement (the hover nozzle REALLY helped that game) The story and added characters were a little cheezy, but that's a good thing
I found Double Dash a little gimmicky, but the gimmicky precept didn't hurt the gameplay at all, they perfectly nailed down the concept of chaotic item-based gameplay
feh

Also:
How could anyone possibly claim that Super Mario Sunshine had wonky Camera controls
That game had the single best set of camera controls ever, very smooth and fully analogue
Patrick @ Jun 21st 2007 12:07PM
That guy is retarded. Some were correct, but about 3/4 were wrong.
#10: Not a sellout. Just a bad game.
#9: Not a sellout. I quote him when he says this is a "water downed fighter". Super Smash Bros. is an amazing game and he wasn't the main person just another fighter.
#8: Oh ya he sold out in the DDR Mario game
#7: Not really a sellout. He was just in the game as a small joke. A sellout if someone who uses their populariaty to make money. I really doubt anyone bought this game for that.
#6 Like the guy said (yes he was correct) Mario Paint was good, but this really was a sellout game.
#5: Super Mario Bros. Movie? That should be the number one sellout moment.
#4: Sellout...in a good way. Anyone will agree (except for the guy who made that video) that Mario Party is a good game. But the game was an obvious sellout game. Just ended up really good.
#3: Baby Mario? It's not a sellout, just a desperate chance for a new character. Now if he was Baby Mario in like a Sony game, then yes, big sellout.
#2: Super Mario 64 for DS. It's debatable. It was a good game (of course) because it was a game made 10 years ago, but no way in hell it is #2 Mario sellout of all time.
#1: Mario Kart: Double Dash was an OK game. I don't think anyone fell in love with it but still that guy is retarded. That game was just a bad game. Not a sellout.
Apparently this guy doesn't know what a sellout is. He was wrong about 7/10. He got three half right. I say half because he put them in the wrong places. What about those McDonald's commercials and stuff at the beginning? Those weren't even at the beginning.

What, no mention of Mario's umpteen other cameo appearances in games? Well, let me fix that:
