Pokemon Center brings out yet another Pikachu portable
To celebrate the July 20th opening of its new Tokyo store, the Pokémon Center will be offering Pikachu-branded, yellow DS Lites to an unannounced number of gamers. Those who're looking for a chance to grab one of the special edition handhelds will be able to submit an "application" at any of the Pokémon Center's five locations in Japan. Submissions will be accepted up to July 1st, and those eligible to purchase the 16,800 yen DS Lite (approx. $138) will be notified by postcard later in the month. Even if you're not a Pikachu fan, you could always just acquire one anyway and tell everyone that the face on the lid is actually a rosy-cheeked rabite.
Despite a near-decade's worth of handheld variants featuring the mousy mascot, these Pokémon-designed consoles show no signs of slowing down. Take a stroll through memory lane and check out all the Pikachu portables we were able to round up after the post break.

I'm not sure why but that colour makes me feel physically sick! Otherwise I would buy one.

Man, I really like that GBA SP. I wish I'd had a chance at it, but then again, I do love my Classic NES GBA SP.

I think it would have benefited from a bit of orange striping, a la Pikachu's back. Or even two red cheek spots. Something. But the yellow is cute.

Ah, you see SpazCat, the solution is to own the Pikachu-face SP *in addition* to your existing Classic NES SP. Worked out pretty well for me!
I can't tell you how excited I was the day I found out the Pikachu SP's were to be sold in the US. It had been YEARS since they'd come out in Japan, seemingly ample evidence they would remain Japan-only, like so many other offerings...but they didn't! Since I can't afford to import all of the Pokemon handhelds, I console myself with the fact that the Pikachu SP is by far the coolest design, plus the late-generation SP's are just so functional, with the kickass backlight and the ability to play any Gameboy game. (I don't get much use out of my Pokemon GBC, you know?) Between it and my Pikachu N64, I consider myself blessed.
