FFIV DS to remove spoony bard?! [update 1]
[Update 1: Our bad. It appears that, in fact, three-fourths of the original game script was actually left out of the SNES title, and much of it will be added in for the new DS re-release. Still, the probability of a script rewrite is extremely high, so our terrifying supposition remains.]Unacceptable, we decry! News from yon Square Enix headquarters, which is releasing approximately a dozen Final Fantasy-branded games in the next twelve months, reports that over three-fourths of Final Fantasy IV's script will be completely redone for the upcoming DS re-release. This is generally good news, as Square Enix's early efforts hardly utilized the kind of localization teams they employ today, but this particular instance is blasphemy.
The term "spoony bard" has become a cultural mainstay for today's youth. Why, when's the last time you could even leave the house without hearing it spoken thrice in direct succession? The removal of this phrase, we feel, would be extremely detrimental to the development of future generations. Square Enix, we implore thee, leave this paragon of digital literature be.
[Thanks, zshadow!]

noOOO!!! This is the second greatest FF phrase since "I, Garland, will knock you all down!!" and they dare try to take it down?!
This is blasphemy... T_T
Why do this to us, squeenix? I freakin love that line! It's the only reason I start a game over and over again!

I first saw that line in a SNES tips & tricks book. Still memorable and shouldn't be taken out.
CapeMonkey @ May 17th 2007 1:22PM
They retranslated the script for the Game Boy Advance release, and the line "You spoony bard!" was still around. It's a little too early to be speculating on it being taken out, I think...
Illtron @ May 17th 2007 1:44PM
If they're rewriting the entire script, I think it's fair cause for alarm.
FWIW, I *probably* won't be buying the game when it comes out because I just got my GBA FFIV yesterday from Amazon (try finding it in a store, it's impossible).
I just needed to throw in my two cents and say that I remember it too.

I shall have to make my own.

So what? They've completely re-written the script every time a new port of this is released and the "Spoony Bard" line has always been kept, just like FFI's "I, Garland, will knock you all down!"
The localization team is smart enough not to remove it now.

Nobody has a line on the release date?
Ive been playing FF games since junior high school, and this is one of my favorite ones along with 4, 7, and 12.
Spoony bard ftw!
Ainu @ May 17th 2007 3:01PM
Smells like FFVI Advance, without the "KEFKA: Son of a submariner".
Big Mike @ May 17th 2007 6:13PM
Whens this bad boy coming out?
Pichi @ May 17th 2007 6:40PM
"Takashi Tokita, the main writer for FF4s story, reveals that 75% of the original script had to be cut out. This is in reference to the original Japanese script, not with any translation cuts. So some of the new scenario and events they intend to put in FF4 DS are from the stuff they intended to put in but didnt."
dsfanboy is wrong here.
