Mortal Kombat performs fatality on Wi-Fi functionality

While we've all thought since January that the odds of online gameplay making its way into Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for the Wii were almost nonexistent, it seems now that we may finally take that nonexistence by the throat and choke it to death. And toss it in a trunk, lock it shut with chains and padlocks, finally tossing it into the Atlantic ocean. It just isn't happening, as the game's producer Shaun Himmerick revealed to AMN in a quick Q & A session. This, of course, is quite sad, considering that some folks working on the game actually wanted to include online functionality.

Not online, not buying it.

So now I won't be buying this.

The Wii is just a gimmick. I've had my wii since launch day and the only game I've been interested in getting is Super Paper Mario. (which is really a Gamecube game) Real gamers stay away from the Wii. I'm giving my Wii to my girlfriend and I'm getting an XBOX360.

Boy... talk about overreaction. Frank, relax buddy. Your outbursts can be taken care of with prescribed medication. We will all look back a year from now and laugh our butts off while playing online.
I trust Nintendo. They will decide where the industry is heading. You'll see that the next generation of systems for both Microsoft and Sony will follow suit in adapting motion sensored controls or whatever Nintendo has in mind for the next generation.
Relax, online functionality will come.

"it seems now that we may finally take that nonexistence by the throat and choke it to death. And toss it in a trunk, lock it shut with chains and padlocks, finally tossing it into the Atlantic ocean."
The way this is written makes it seem like you're doing away with the ninexistence, which would mean that you're confirming that it DOES exist. Which is the opposite of what you actually mean. I'd suggest changing it to say "...we may finally take that extremely slight possibility by the throat..."
Also I agree with Elric in that I'm not going to buy this if it doesn't have online, and I'm starting to agree with Frank. My Wii has been collecting dust for months, and as the kind of gamer who values the replayability and interaction that online titles offer I'm just not seeing much in the Wii's coming lineup that holds any interest for me. I'm still extremely disappointed about MP3 lacking online multiplayer, and until someone starts providing that kind of content for the Wii you're going to see more and more sales lost to the 360 once Halo 3 comes out.

It sucks that there's no wi-fi, but I'm still getting it just for the Wii controls. Classics and GC controllers work too, so it's got all the bases covered.
Hey Frank, real gamers aren't scared of change. New things are good.

This was announced months ago, in fact this very website posted about it back in March

Online for a game requiring quick reflexes is likely going to be a waste anyway. With latency likely hovering anywhere from 50-200ms on the internet, I'm sure the game this genre of game is better without online play.
Save that sort of online play for puzzles, shooters, sports titles and RPGs.
hhceo @ May 9th 2007 9:40PM
@ John
Ya cause any kind of online fighting game will crumble to latency. Ive played many online games(shooter, mmo, and fighting) and latency does happen but we still seem to get some matches in. Nintendo should offer a media channel and some online MP. Cause the wii seems like a system that is scared of the net. Even the PSP can do online geez.

While online is important, is it enough to be a deal breaker for a game that you would otherwise want? I don't think it should be.
Spekkio @ May 10th 2007 2:54PM
Lack of online play is a deal breaker if it's a game that you weren't terribly interested in unless online play was included.
