First look at Final Fantasy IV 3D remake [Update 1]
Japanese magazine Shonen Jump has unveiled the first screenshots of Square Enix's Final Fantasy IV 3D remake, confirming rumors about its development that've been circulating since yesterday. The preview shows a sampling of combat and Cecil wandering through a populated town. Run past the post break for the scanned page and a smug look from Shonen Jump's pirate guy. With FFIV released for the GBA around late 2005 and FFIII remade for the DS just last November, are you starting to tire from all of Square Enix's rehashes like we are? We won't deny that the 3D engine looks great, but do we have to revisit every single Final Fantasy adventure with it, especially when an updated version of this particular game already came out less than two years ago? And for the love of all that is good and holy, why haven't Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger made it on the list of games to be remade yet?

[Update 1: Whoops, mixed up our dark knights with dragoons. Thanks for the correction, crossbone!)

Duuuuuuuude... and I've still to beat this damned game on the SNES. I think this one might get me to actually try to finish it. I'm already liking the VJ-esque character design.

Wake me up when they remake FF6j in 3D. ;)
Saphion @ May 9th 2007 10:19AM
I've never played the original so I'll definitely be picking this up.
And Secret of Mana! That game was freaking awesome.

"The preview shows a sampling of combat and the series' Dragoon class wandering through a populated town. Run past the post break for the scanned page and a smug look from Shonen Jump's pirate guy."
That's no dragoon class, that's Cecil....have you guys played this game before?

Yes we do.

I will stand in line to buy this or any other 3d remake of a classic final fantasy game they throw my way. Having beaten the original I would list IV as one of the best in the series.
onepointfivevolt @ May 9th 2007 11:21AM
to be fair, the GBA remake was crap. at least in the States. it was buggy and laggy to the point of unplayable, as far as i'm concerned. i hear europe got a better version, though. personally, i think this looks fantastic, and i hope they just keep going on up through VI.

this is one of my all-time favorite games! i am so excited that this is coming to DS! now my little bro can experience this awesome story! the music - the story - the characters. this game is top notch! i can't wait to see what the moon and the underworld looks like!
Matthias @ May 9th 2007 12:51PM
Well, I considered buying the GBA port in the near future, since I haven't played any version of this game yet - well, I think I'll wait a little bit ;-)
John @ May 9th 2007 12:55PM
I hate the 3-D.
Chris @ May 9th 2007 1:05PM
YES! YES, we DO need them to remake all of them. Every single one they put out I will happily buy.
I'm so excited.
Yan @ May 9th 2007 1:40PM
lol John. that means you hate 3d games in general? >.>
anyways, nice screenshots of the game! im looking forward to this awesome game!

Fortyseven:
Newsflash: FFVI"j" has been FFVI ever since we got the damn game way back on FF Anthology. We all know what FFVI is by now. Honest.
Besides, there never even -was- an "FF6j." I believe you're looking for the terms "FF2j" and "FF3j."
Cheers~

Given a lot of people didn't like the GBA FF4 because of sluggishness (I also remember hearing about some bugs that the GBA version introduced), a full-on remake is welcome in my book. And since we'll probably see FF5 and FF6 on the DS anyway, might as well go for it.
kaiju @ May 9th 2007 2:55PM
Hopefully we're finally going to get a 3D remake of Chrono Trigger sometime.
Nik @ May 9th 2007 6:44PM
I wasn't biting when FF III came out last year because of what I was sure would be archaic gameplay mechanics like I found in Dawn of Souls for GBA. However I recently picked up the FFVI remake and love it to death so this one should be awesome :D
Still... Squeenix? How about after this we move away from Final Fantasy for a while mmmkay? After Tactics 2, Revenant Wings, FFIII and FFIV I think we're ready for some Chrono Trigger lovin' ;)
Donald @ May 9th 2007 5:15PM
WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Bluebreaker @ May 9th 2007 6:52PM
I knew it! Ever since Romancing SaGa had their remake I just knew SE would go back and do a lot of their 2D games and give them an extreme makeover.
I wonder if we'll get the new content from FFIVA in this one? I really liked the "extended version" of FF4 the best.
King @ May 10th 2007 1:34AM
*Squeals like a little girl who got her first Cabbage patch kid*
I love this, and I will buy it and play it - as must everyone else, cus if this doesn't sell well, then they may not make FFVI in this form.
After VI we definitely need Chrono Trigger. Mana I'll pass on, as well as any other FF they do. IV, VI, and VIII are my fave FF games.
I've been saying for *years* that they should remake all the old FF games in 3D, and now they are... praise be to Squenix! :-D
Cat Buddy @ May 11th 2007 9:12AM
FF4 has arguably the best story of the series. This thing is gonna be good! Any word on extras?
Mike @ May 12th 2007 8:50PM
Man, they really know how to pimp a franchise. I am looking forward to this, as well and any CT or FF6 remakes. Although, I think Final Fantasy 6 should be revisited on an actual console (PS3 or 360, I don't care).
Does the DS Lite allow you suspend GBA games like DS titles? My old brick doesn't suspend the system when you close the lid while playing GBA games. I tried to play FF Tactics and couldn't get into it because of this deficiency.
ttegeravg @ May 12th 2007 9:20PM
FFVI(6) is (in my opinion) infinitely greater than FFIV(4),
Kefka is a much better villain than Zeromus,
the story in FFVI(6) is more involved, and even though there's no explicitly stated protagonist
(I don't believe Terra is really the protagonist)
Locke, Edgar, and Shadow are all much better characters than Cecil.
You can't have an opinion of FFVI(6) if you haven't played it
I've played FFIV(4) and even though it's definitely not the worst in the series, it still can't touch FFVI(6) which is the best game in the series
(no, FF7 is not the best, if you think it is you should play every other game in the series and then play FF7 again so you can see how inadequate it is by comparison)
Jace @ May 18th 2007 10:53PM
I won't buy a DS just for this, but if they did VI, I would be on that like a monkey on a trampoline.
Ohartnet @ May 18th 2007 12:48AM
VI may be more advanced storywise, technically, graphically (of course it is! it came out years after IV did!) but I find a certain charm to IV that I didn't feel with VI. Perhaps it is because I played IV before playing VI, and it was the first FF game to engage me completely (not to mention that I played it when it was first released, and back then it looked amazing :P). Also, I slightly prefer the musical soundtrack of IV over VI, even though the synthesizer was much improved upon in the latter. I think that this game could well rival VI if they tweak it up a bit, as it has a ton of potential...I recently played it again on GBA and wasn't as intrigued by it as I had been, due to growing older and seeing its flaws more clearly...so ..I'm eagerly awaiting this remake and hope that they do the game justice by fleshing out the storylines, improving the dialogue, and making the characters come to life a bit more. If they do that, I think it would change a lot of opinions about IV.
Mathius @ May 30th 2007 11:21PM
Oh how I have waited for this. I used to one of the top rated Final Fantasy IV fan sites on the net (FFIV Eternal Light) a while ago. I have been playing the game since it came out on the SNES. Currently, I own over 11 versions of FFIV from the original SNES, to the GBAdvance. I've collected over one thousand dollors worth of merchandise and games. This will make a wonderful addition. I might bring my website back to life with this new version. It looks so sweeeet!

FF IV is my favorite FF game. i first played it when i was 12 now im already 26.omg time freaking flies -_-'.. the whole converting from darkness to light and the complicated alien( if you played this game you know what i mean, im not trying to spoil *cough*lunarians _) family ties this game has...really made me love it more than any FF game. this game was the first i noticed to have a connection to possible other FF worlds. can't so no more on that lol but all i can say is watch the ending carefully and the words of goblez and da moon.

I know it's FF for the umpteenth time. Square has been doing this and doing this since the Wonderswan was out. Yet FF3 was the only one that never made it. Hahaha!!! Re-releasing their games over and over again. Yeah and it's kind of silly that we got a FFIV-VI for GBA and now they're remaking FFIV for the DS. Well, hopefully this remake will offer a little more to the story of what we didn't get. The wiki stated that we only got 1/4 of the story. So they want to try and do it right this time. So, does that mean we didn't get everything when they put it on the PSX? I mean I bought those games too. I do want both 3 and 4 for DS. And if they decided to do 5 & 6, I'd buy them. More so FF6. But I'm not going to waste my money for remakes of 1 & 2 on the other systems when I already own them on PSX. I mean 1 and 2 for PSP. Nah!! But I guess Square is keeping FF alive so that any generation that comes along will be able to play it. But supposedly there was suppose to be a new 'Seiken' game but it's almost like nothing more has been said on it. Think it was 'Heroes of Mana'. It would be cool if they re-released 'Seiken 3' (the one we didn't get) on DS. Considering that new one 'Heroes of Mana' is supposed to be a prequel. Or something. I would love to see it. I guess eventually they'll remake the Saga GB versions. Seems everyone is remaking their games for the portables.
