Kojima: Brawl is "very complete"
Our love of Kojima is no secret within the walls of Fanboy HQ, so when he goes on record saying that he got to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl with the game's director, Masahiro Sakurai, we listen. Not only that, but the game he played was apparently very polished. How polished? Well, according to Kojima Productions podcast person Ryan Patton, Kojima said the game was "a lot of fun" and "already feels very complete."As if that wasn't enough torture, Kojima apparently further emphasized his opinions on how finished the game felt, adding "You guys could put it out right now and it could sell millions of copies." Of course, we're kind of peeved that the game isn't on store shelves, in its apparent "millions-selling version," but if the version Kojima played was that good, imagine what the final product is going to be like?

FISS01 @ Apr 27th 2007 1:02PM
And is not finished yet... AAHHHHWWWW...
I need to change my pants now...
Ed @ Apr 27th 2007 1:32PM
Guess it may really come out this holiday season then.
blasphemizer @ Apr 27th 2007 1:35PM
I have a general understanding for what it means, but what is pwned?
hvnlysoldr @ Apr 27th 2007 1:38PM
They should take this time to polish the whole game, add new modes, add new trophies, add new mini-competitions or games, add characters, and balance everything. Oh and make online, 1vs.1 is good enough. I wish for Sonic, MegaMan, and Baiten Kaitos.
I nearly can't wait for Brawl and am tempted to buy Melee. I'm wondering if I should.
Andrew @ Apr 27th 2007 1:51PM
Yes. Spend the $20 and buy a used copy of melee. You won't regret it.
Steve @ Apr 27th 2007 3:46PM
I've never liked the play control on fighting games so I was never able to enjoy Super Smash Bros. Suddenly having to press up to make Mario jump instead of an action button just never felt intuitive.
I always hoped the game would allow you to control each character the way they control in their respective games, but I realize that wouldn't be pratical. For example, while it would be awesome to play as Samus using the Metroid Prime 1st person perspective it would make it impossible to have a second player...unless you used those unpopular splitscreen views.

"I nearly can't wait for Brawl and am tempted to buy Melee. I'm wondering if I should."
It only justified the existence of the Gamecube. I say go for it, especially if you have some friends to play with.
Frip @ Apr 27th 2007 2:23PM
"It only justified the existence of the Gamecube."
I meant to say "It alone". Not a prick. :(
samfish @ Apr 27th 2007 2:43PM
Yeah, only buy SSBM if you've got a group of buddies to play against regularly. Otherwise it kinda sucks, to be honest.
shadow @ Apr 27th 2007 3:10PM
Frip:I was just about to lay down a whole list of great Gamecube games :p. Your revised comment makes much more sense :p.
On related news, blasphemizer: The long and short is that 'pwnd' is a play on the misspelling of the word,"Owned." Notice on your keyboard that the 'p' button is very close to the 'o' button(IE. right next to it). So it would be an easy mistake to type 'pwned' instead of 'owned'. Thus the conception of the phrase.
That being said, I can't wait for this to come out! I just hope I don't get too much of it like I did with Melee. I'm just now barely starting to get back into Melee. I had a friend that didn't want to play ANYTHING aside from Melee. My friends and I would even try renting other multiplayer games(Custom Robo, SNK Vs. Capcom, etc.) and we would only play for about 2 or 3 rounds(If we were lucky) before our one specific friend would say,"Ok, let's play Smash Bros!"
The funny thing is that he thought he was really good. It wasn't that he was good so much as my friends and I never put any effort into it anymore. We played so much that we didn't care if we won or not, so most of the time it was just easier to let him win.
trainwrecka @ Apr 27th 2007 5:21PM
this is great news... now when it is delayed 3 or 4 times we will know they are only adding more characters... :)
Jonathan Tran @ Apr 27th 2007 3:28PM
"I have a general understanding for what it means, but what is pwned?"
Pwned is what just happened to you for asking this question on the Interweb.
blasphemizer @ Apr 27th 2007 3:35PM
OH snap!!
I just got dork served!!!
but seriously WTF is pwned?
is it an acronym?
is it an intentional typo for owned?
shadow @ Apr 27th 2007 3:44PM
blasphemizer:Read my previous post, I already answered that question ;). Sorry if I burried it in some text. It's the first real paragraph(Not the semi-introductory one that's only like one sentence long). The fourth word of the paragraph is even your name :).
Mr Khan @ Apr 27th 2007 3:52PM
@ Steve
you do know there were always jump buttons on the Smash Bros control maps, right?
C pad for the original, X and Y for Melee
And i would say that Smash Bros was for GC what Halo was for the Xbox, its not like it was the ONLY worthwhile game on the console, but it was the gateway system seller that was responsible for at least 1/3 of GC's sales...
I'm betting a december release, though. Rumors come down the pipeline about a December release in Japan, and i don't see why they wouldn't want it to help their holiday sales elsewhere, too. Plus that would make it almost exactly 6 years since Melee (at least in US)
James @ Apr 27th 2007 4:14PM
SSBM is probably worth 20 bucks even as a single-player game -- far more for multi-player, sure, but single-player is fun too. There's a couple of minigames/challenges that will keep you involved. If nothing else, mastering every character against the AI will take you tens of hours.
Roger @ Apr 27th 2007 4:31PM
if its complete than release it damnit! or at least add some crap or tinker with online! make it all out.
Soiden @ Apr 27th 2007 5:40PM
Maybe Sakurai wanted to get the fighting system done perfectly, and that's the only finished part of the game. Maybe they still need to improve graphics, make final models for characters and scenarios, define more interactions with every scenario, add all known modes and create new ones [I'm sure there will be new modes], and even add music, voices and more characters. So yes, maybe the game can 'feel complete' to fight, but everything else is totally uncomplete.
shadow @ Apr 27th 2007 5:49PM
"if its complete than release it damnit! or at least add some crap or tinker with online! make it all out."
At this point they are still finishing things up. Kojima said it felt like it was complete, but I'm sure there are plenty of single player things still in there, and working out the kinks and small glitches.
Not to mention, even if the game was 100% done right now, Nintendo would still not release the game. It's not very smart for them. Why sell a game that is guaranteed to move more systems than a bulldozer when they're already moving systems. Don't expect Brawl until the Wii starts to slow down and is actually readily available. I would say that predictions of a winter release are probably right. By then the Wii should have considerably slow down in sales, and Nintendo will want a hard hitter anyway.
Tim @ Apr 28th 2007 5:14AM
I'd much prefer a longer wait in exchange for more work being done on the game, because if Melee was enough to get me and my brother in front of the TV for hours, a 2.0 version with online play needs to be as golden as possible.
badboy15 @ Apr 29th 2007 10:27AM
man, i am defintely getting this game when it comes out. My friends love SSBM so the new version will have to be awesome. and online play will be so cool i'll stay up all night so i can kill people online
