Pokemon pokes fun at Sony

We can't say we've encountered this for ourselves yet, but apparently it's in the game. Whether it's a joke at Sony's expense or not, we're laughing all the same. Now, if only that trainer used Krabby ...

Yeah, it's in there. There's also a point where someone tells you that if you don't have a single gym badge, you'll look like a noob.
Oh, and a clown who says "A winner is you!"
Between this and Super Paper Mario, I have to say, Nintendo's US localization team is getting pretty clever. Or, at least, they're on the Internet more often.
Loban @ Apr 25th 2007 10:50AM
Nintendo is more in tune with the aging game (>25 years of age) than any other company in my opinion. While Sony is busy telling us what they think we want, Nintendo is listening to us and giving us what we really want.
Loban @ Apr 25th 2007 10:51AM
Oops, I meant "aging gamer".
The_Wind_Waker8 @ Apr 25th 2007 11:12AM
Like I told my friends, I'm going to go back to LeafGreen, catch a Krabby and name it Sony. Then I'm gonna take it online in D/P and when it gets critically hit, I'm going to yell into my mic, "You hit my weak spot for massive damage!"
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Raaaaaaaacer!
ssuk @ Apr 25th 2007 12:22PM
I'm getting quite sick of the gaming world thinking todays English language consists of "pwn" "own" and all other 151 memes the internet has appearing in our games. Phoenix Wright is basically a mish-mash of YTMND and 4Chan /b/ memes, which is good for a laugh, but Nintendo seems to throw in a "1337-speak" line in whenever they possibly can.
It isn't just limmited to Nintendo either, remember Kingdom Hearts 2 and the "that was definate proof we owned you lamers"... I think localisation teams need to re-evaluate what's hip with people in the real world rather then checking GameFAQ and 4Kids TV forums.
atsui @ Apr 25th 2007 12:40PM
I totally agree with you ssuk. It really pisses me off, even to see it all over the web.
It really does tick me off a lot. It needs to stop.
Elric @ Apr 25th 2007 12:44PM
How is this making fun of Sony? I would say more of a Wii joke with TV's being the assistant. No? I just don't understand what it has to do with Sony.
religiousjedi @ Apr 25th 2007 12:56PM
@Elric
I believe it was at last year's E3, when Ken Kutaragi (sp?) showed off the PS3. He put in a demo where this group of people were fighting off a giant crab. Kutaragi then showed off where to hit the giant crab for "massive damage." He tried to make it sound cool...or something around that. Anyways, the whole presentation seemed stale, so they keep making fun of Kutaragi for that phrase (and Riiiiiiiiiiidge Racer!)...
...or something like that...
ConstyXIV @ Apr 25th 2007 1:12PM
Yeah, this and the L33T H4MM3R BROZ in Partners of Time.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Apr 25th 2007 2:02PM
I've actually been writing a list of 'leet speak' terms I've seen in the game so far.
Noob (x3)
For the Win (x4)
Leet (x1)

That's not at all where the phrase came from. It is from last year's E3, but Kutaragi was no where on the stage when it was said. The lead of the team who was producing Genji 2 was on the stage and was demoing it and showing off one of the levels. He says that the game is actually based off of real historic battles and then partway through the level he gets to a boss which happened to be a "Giant Enemy Crab".
He then went on to say that you had to flip it over and hit its weak spot for massive damage to beat it.
And it was Kaz Hirai that said "Riiiiiiidge Racerrrrr!" not Ken.
Rubang B @ Apr 25th 2007 6:50PM
Ah crap, I haven't started my Partners in Time yet, and now you ruined the L33T Hammer Bros. for me!
Hobofuzz @ Apr 25th 2007 6:14PM
I was playing Super Paper Mario the other day... or was it Rogue Galaxy? I can't tell anymore since I've been playing so many damn games lately, but one of the characters mentioned "hitting the enemy in its weak spot for massive damage"
Nushio @ Apr 25th 2007 6:46PM
Gotta love Nintendo.
This actually happens early game. I must've missed the humor, but now that I reread it, yes, they're poking fun at Sony, but then again, who isn't?
As for the Krabby joke... I'd SO want to have one on my team!
religiousjedi @ Apr 25th 2007 9:17PM
@Silver R. Wolf
Ah, guess I was wrong then. Thanks for the clear-up! :)

(P.S. I took that one myself. if you played the game, you would have seen it too... lol)
Joshua @ Apr 25th 2007 10:34PM
Yeah, I've been picking up on these in the game! The translators really made a few cool references there! It makes the game even better. :)
Spencer @ Apr 26th 2007 9:47AM
Isnt this like, before your first gym badge? It is your first double battle, and its either before your first or your second badge.
ConstyXIV @ Apr 26th 2007 3:30PM
@19 Spencer
Indeed it is.
Alex @ Apr 26th 2007 4:21PM
@ ssuk, internet language like owned, etc. is associated with gaming, its a culture, or at least a lifestyle to many people so I see nothing wrong with companies expending the dialect in their games. Its already popular in online gaming, plus it shows companies are trying to get in touch more with the hardcore gamers than the casual ones.
Donald @ Apr 26th 2007 4:41PM
One of the trainers on Route 205 pumps themselves up by yelling "OSU" before the fight.
Sadly, no Ouendan ensues.
dustin @ Apr 27th 2007 5:12PM
Also when your rival says, "you can tell I'm the hotness"
that was funny

I caught an old Nintendo one the other day while playing Super Paper Mario. When you first the end boss for level one he says, "I am Error" after one of the baddies fries his circuits. Anyone thats ever played The Adventures of Link for NES knows who that is... or does anyone really know? ÔO
Fooley @ May 25th 2007 3:01AM
I doubt someone will see this, since its 3am and im bored. But the guy who translated this is a poster on the somthing awful forums, so he peppered references to SA and net stuff in general through the game.
