Flash 7 in Opera browser is ... Adobe's fault?

Sure, the browser isn't the best choice available (still beats the PS3's browser), but when Opera released the final version of its browser for the Wii, many found the update to be a big improvement over the previous trial version available. We thought the thing improved a lot of aspects of browsing ourselves and now we find we're surfing the internet on our Wii a lot more than we used to.

Still, many of you out there are a bit upset over the thing. Well, we can shed some light on one common issue: the use of Flash 7 over the more modern versions available. Turns out, this is due to Adobe more than anyone else, as without the latest Flash SDK (software development kit) available, it's impossible for anyone looking to run the more modern versions of Flash (8 and 9) to do so without the use of Windows, Mac, or Linux. So, until Adobe releases the latest SDK, we're all stuck with the ancient Flash 7.

Is there any indication at all that Opera might drop a Wii browser update once Adobe gets its shit together? 'Cause if this is the last word in Wii browser support... well, I guess it's just a bit depressing. I know the PSP folks must have considered their browser "good enough", since I don't think it's been updated since release. I just hope the Wii doesn't stagnate like that.

Opera made this known back when the original beta Wii browser was released.

Well Opera did say they would be able to easily update the browser through WiiConnect24, so there's still hope. Obviously the interwebs will be different (as far as software and standards go) at the end of the Wii's life cycle (6 years?) so there's no way they can get away with NOT updating it over the years.

Since I've updated to 2.2E all my internet functions don't work(won't connect). I got a full 3 bar signal and the connection test works. Are the servers down?

adobe is owned by microsoft so flash is not as good as it was when it was owned by marcromedia

Finally I get to find out why it's Adobe's fault. I'm surprised they haven't released the SDK yet.

@6 and 7 : Nope. Adobe is not owned by Microsoft. (Although they did work together to develop the OpenType font format.)

heh Adobe isn't owned my Microsoft. Actually Microsoft has been talking about releasing competing flash type products for a while now. I think there was some articles on Slashdot talking about it recently.

He probably meant that Macromedia is owned by Adobe which is true. That's a fairly recent thing. Not quite sure how I feel about it yet. It'll be good in some ways and bad in others.

Other than the fact Billy_McBong is completely wrong, he's completely wrong. Not only does who owns it not have anything to do with it (Adobe had -just- bought Macromedia when 9 came out) but the fact that the SDK for 8 wasn't out means it was still Macromedia's fault. Not to mention it has nothing to do with Flash not being 'better'...
