VC Monday Madness: Finally, we get Punch Out!!

Seriously, how long have you been waiting for this Virtual Console release? Since late November, right? Well, we've been waiting for it too, and although it's not the game we all grew up with, it's relatively the same title. The other titles available are a pair of games we all knew would be emerging on the service, so no surprises this week.
The games available for download after 9 a.m. Pacific Time are:
- Punch Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES, 1 player, 500 points)
- Bonk's Revenge (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 points)
- Virtua Fighter 2 (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 points)

That's strange, the American release of Punch out featured Mike Tyson, but you guys end up getting the European release that changed him to Mr Dream due to licensing issues.
coyurtney @ Apr 16th 2007 11:59AM
no, they released this version in the US too. After Tyson went to jail.

From the Wikipedia article linked above:
"In 1990, towards the end of the NES's run, the game was re-released as Punch-Out!!, with the Tyson character replaced by Mr. Dream. Mr. Dream fought in the same fashion as Tyson, but had cosmetic changes to his face and skin color. Contrary to popular belief Tyson was removed not because of his 1991 rape conviction of Miss Black Teen America, but because of a contract dispute with Nintendo and his title loss to Buster Douglas."
It was re-released with Mr. Dream instead of Mike Tyson in the USA, albeit late in the console's lifetime.

I love my Wii and I really dig the Virtual Console
but... Where's the big games like Chrono Trigger or
Perfect Dark? I (stupidly) thought we'd be seeing alot
more classics by now not just a bunch of Tubo Graphix
games.
It seems like Nintendo could be doing alot more towards
updating classic games ie. better graphics, expanded content and "gasp" online play.Of course they're doing the opposite and removing content.
Picture, Perfect Dark w/ no slow down, more guns and outfits, online w/ Hi-res graphics. Pretty cool huh?
I just think it's lazy "Here's a game you probably already own, no enhancements, for more cash."Thanks guys.

I'm so excited. Punch Out and Bonk's revenge. I can't wait to get home and download these. I've been waiting for both of these for a while.

Only 5 dollars, might as well. Bonk's Revenge, too. This is actually a pretty good VC week except Virtua Fighter.

I loved Punch Out, but I'm actually a bit spoiled -- I think I liked Super Punch Out (SNES) a bit better. I know the NES cart is the real classic, but I liked some of the extras they threw into the SNES version. I hope that one hits VC as well...

Bah, Riddick Bowe Boxing was the REAL king of boxing games back on the SNES. I'm still waiting for that and Tecmo Super Bowl 3. My cartridges are always finicky :(.

I totally agree with #6. Super Punch Out is bar far my fav, but I'll still pick up the original when I get home tonight. There's still some nostalgia to be had with some great gameplay.

I think XBLA would be more suited for your taste. The Virtual Console is more for those people catching up with older games they never got a chance to play. There are already a lot of gems on the VC, if you ask me. You can't expect them to upload every game at once. They're going to be milking the shitty ones, too.
Also, Chrono Trigger is a lot more likely to appear on the VC than Perfect Dark. Square is supporting the VC, Rare obviously won't be.
m bowen @ Apr 16th 2007 4:04PM
I think there's pretty much no chance of seeing Perfect Dark, so I'd just give up that hope right now. That franchise, much like Banjo Kazooie and Conker, belongs to Microsoft now.
Also, VC doesn't do graphics tweaks, performance upgrades and the like. If we did get PD on VC, it'd be just as you remember, slow down, seam tearing and all. To paraphrase Electronic Arts, "if it was in the game, it's in the game".

I've beat both Tyson and Mr. Dream (they're exactly the same, I just had to), but I can't get anywhere in Super Punch-Out!. I should give it a whirl again.
A.J. @ Apr 16th 2007 11:54PM
I'm using Perfect Dark as an example but I'll never give up hope.
I'm not trying to dis' the V.C. I'm just trying to
show that the big N' could be doing more to add value
to our consumer dollar.
I just can't wait to see something like F.F.2 or
Earthbound 3 (in english) come down the pipe.
XBLA does look real cool but it almost seems like you're
paying money just to see the selections. Now to go truly off topic. Why would a console need a red ring of
death built in anyway? It's like "Hey, our R&D guys really suck so we'll put this red ring of death in there so the people who buy this thing will know when they're screwed." Perfect.
And now for the most off topic thing so far. We know
that that after the GCN was out the door work began on
what we now refer to as the Wii. What the heck is
Nintendo working on for the next next generation?
Ryan Thorpe @ Apr 17th 2007 4:35PM
Didn't they release Donkey Kong Country for the VC? That's a Rare title. Why wouldn't other games come out on VC? Unless I'm missing something.
