Could Super Paper Mario have DS functionality? [update 1]

We'll admit, we haven't gotten that far in Super Paper Mario yet. That's why the above picture intrigued us so. Sent in by reader David, it hints at a future update that could allow Super Paper Mario and your DS to interact in some way. In which ways could the game and DS interact? We have no idea and, frankly, are incapable of even speculating at the moment, but if you want to see it for yourself, in-game, check around the kitchen on the first floor of Flipside. We just cannot conceive how the two would play nice together.
Any readers want to take a guess?
Update: Looks like the game won't have any DS functionality, as our Poppa site Joystiq, along with the comments, say otherwise. We want to believe though!
[Thanks, David! That's an awesome name, by the way.]

There is no connectivity, it is just a recipe data base. Nintendo likes referencing other systems in their games, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door had a DS as an in game email device as well as a GBA matching the fights in the Glitz Pit. Luigi's Mansion had the Gameboy Horror. This is just another thing similar to those.
Sorry to disappoint, we will have to wait for Pokemon to see some connectivity

I think you mean it was a GBA SP that was used in 1000 year door for the Email Device.

Welp.

If this was fact it would have been broadcast everywhere. At any rate, it's fun to collect the little DS carts that have recipes on them in the game. They're well-hidden!

It would be neat if you could view the other dimension on your DS. For instance, if you are 2D you would see the 3D, and vice versa.

Why isn't anyone talking about the system update that either is available online or comes built-in to the Paper Mario disc? Have yet to see what the update changes, so who's to say it isn't some kind of functionality?

Call me old, but I miss the days when you have 3 lives and then you die. I've been playing Super Paper Mario and I havent died yet. Also, dont bother getting this game if you dont like reading. Most of the time you're reading text on the screen instead of actually playing.

Of interest, when I put the Super Paper Mario disc in my Wii, a screen of the game on the gamedisc channel didn't appear. It just remained as a blank disc.
Upon opening the channel, I was told that a "Wii System Update" was being performed. Apparently the game requires a certain System Update to be on the Wii before you are able to play.

As everyone has said, if it had DS connnectivity (even just a little smidgen of it) Nintendo would NOT keep it a secret. They would declare it far and wide.

It has nothing to do with DS connectivity, its just some cook book data reader or something like it, made some photo's with the camera on my phone if you'd like to see the pictures, follow the links, they explain all :)

The system update does make some changes to the system setup menu, and also adds the first menu for the Shop channel for those of us who have never been online with our Wiis.
Nothing too exciting, though. Hence the fact I didn't go fire off an OMG-email to WiiFanboy last night... :)
Other than those two things, the only thing I've noticed is that it seems like the pointer is a little jerky at the Wii menu now. Not inaccurate, but like it's updating its position fewer times per second. Don't know why that would have made a difference, and nothing else about the remote or sensor bar had changed.
And it does warn you in the manual that there's a system update on the disc.

Bleh...just so you know: after Chapter Six, MAKE SURE you have at least four coins with you. If not, DO NOT SAVE IN THE AREA YOU GET TO AFTER YOU ENTER MERLON'S HOUSE. If you do, you'll end up with no way to progress. This just happened to me, so now I have to start the whole damn game over again.
James @ Apr 11th 2007 8:54PM
Huh, I never had to do any updates, but then I've been keeping up-to-date until now. Maybe you needed an older one? Anyway, yeah, pretty cool game, kind of a lot of reading (typical weird Japanese story), but really fun overall. Good to know about the chapter 5 thing -- I often find myself spending my last coin, so I need to watch for that. If I had to start all the way over, I'd be taking it back to the store ;-)

Thought: can one copy a save game to an SD card, then send the file generated by email? I mean, maybe somebody at chapter 5 could send you a save and save you some time. I'm only at chapter 4, but I'd give you mine if you want it.

Thats what I thought at first but it's just a recipe database.
The system update on the disc changed things on my never internet connected Wii. It added support for the SD card for game saves and added a little Wii Menu title at the bottom of the menu.
It also causes the pointer to act very jittery on the Wii menu no matter how I change the settings. But it acts very smoothly in game.
And yes, you could email the SD save file. For some reason its labeled R8PE or something on my SD card. Does that stay the same on all Wii systems?
