Mortal Kombat gets previewed, offers video as well [update 1]

During a preview for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for the Wii, Game Informer revealed that the preview build they were given was actually good. It was better than good, it was fun. And what exactly makes this game so fun? Well, we're glad to report it's the controls.
What's odd about this piece, however, is the report that the folks developing this MK title wanted to include online functionality. What's even more odd though is that the reason given for not including the functionality is Nintendo hasn't given them any online-capable dev kits yet. This goes against the reports of third-party devs already receiving these.
This doesn't make much sense to us, to tell the truth, even if Nintendo's Pokemon Battle Revolution is to kick off the Wi-Fi gameplay on the console. That doesn't mean the developers can't implement the code and just force those who have purchased the game to wait until after Pokemon before turning the Wi-Fi on, right?
Update: Whoops, we got our dates mixed up. MK releases before Pokemon Battle Revolution, explaining why they can't implement online play. Our mistake as we had the DS Pokemon games in mind when we said April.

Actually... Pokémon Battle Revolution is due to release June 25th. So, Mortal Kombat is due to release a month BEFORE Battle Revolution debuts in the US. Confusion, much?

That's just what I was thinking about the online play. I would totally buy this game if it were online, but without it will be a hard decision.

I sucked at the arcade and never played it again. I liked Killer Instinct better. I did see someone go through MKII. Yeesh Goro's brother was tougher than Shao Khan.

Online Play:
Ed Boon's original interview stated that they didn't have access to the online dev kits... this was a long time before Nintendo annoucned that they had even shipped the dev kits to any one. I suspect that they finished the core of the game long before any of the online dev stuff arived. Perhaps its not easy to bolt it in.
Pokemon:
I would argue that with Nintendo wanting to be the first to deliver an online title it gives 3d parties the following advantages:
* If Nintendo's online game play is buggy, its on Nintendo's shoulders instead of the 3d party.
* Pokemon can be dismissed since it is geared toward a specific audience.
* It also gives 3d parties the ability to learn from any mistakes that Nintendo mades first rather then tarnishing their own IP.
My G/F has been a big fan of Mortal Kombat and tends to button mash her way to beating me consistantly. She can never pull of special moves with any reliable success. When this version comes out, I expect my matches will be a lot harder and that I will probably loose a lot more.
I'm looking very forward to this title.

Um... this is wrong...
Pokemon Battle Revolution is coming out on June 25, AFTER MK: Armageddon....
gotta get the facts straight....

Also... I've been told that the PS2's online play tends to run in the laggy side. If I am fighting someone, I'd prefer not to see them pop in and out of field because of high pings. Comming from a Computer Gaming stance, the most frustrating thing with online play is going to be lag. I don't mind that its not online.... I prefer to smack talk the person I am fighting in the same room.

Erm, last time I checked Pokemon Battle Revolution wasn't releasing until June 25th. You may have been referring to the DS games, which are scheduled to release late April.

They probably didn't get the dev kits in time to include this or something along those lines. Who knows and this game should be fun as a rent, but online have sold more copies.

Sorry for the mistake, guys, I had the DS games on my mind when I originally posted this. Thanks for the correction!

I played Mortal Kombat II online with my SNES. It was kinda boring. I didn't get to yell at people and flash them after my fatalities. I'll get my online fighting fix with Smash Bros., but I am dying to try out the controls for this game. I might need both games.
