GDC 07: Mark Rein talks Unreal Engine 3 on the Wii (again)
He said as much last year (wow, seems like yesterday we were calling this thing the Revolution), but the hopes of seeing the Unreal Engine 3 on the Wii is still strong in the community. And this year at GDC, again the question came up and again Mark Rein took the time to take those hopes into a headlock and proceed to give them the Mark said "this is kinda a high definition engine. Designed for a certain level of graphics card and certain amount of CPU. You know, I'm sure one of our licensees will squeeze it down into the Wii. The way Ubisoft squeezed Unreal Engine 2 into the PSP," he explained in a little bit more detail exactly why the Wii and Unreal Engine 3 won't become best buddies, "Unreal Engine 3 is designed for a high level shader architecture and the Wii doesn't have that. I mean, you know, it's just not what we've been aiming for, so it's not something we're looking to do or support." Mark didn't go on to talk about specific companies that were already looking to license the engine, if there even are any, but apparently its fairly cheap to license as Mark said he "only saw a splinter of the money from Splinter Cell."

We dont need the UT3 Engine. There are plenty of other good looking games that dont use it, why should we care if anyone else does. They think just cause they make a decent looking graphics model that everyone has to use it.
Quake was a better game anyway.

Hi wiiboy. Nice to see you're still posting.
Mr Khan @ Mar 9th 2007 5:17PM
And he's posting all over the place, too, eww
Honestly though, i don't think interviewers should be allowed to ask such banal questions
They already know the answer, they knew the answer since the devs began recieving the kits, since E3 06

I don't get why not having the Unreal Engine 3 on the Wii is such a big deal. If the engine is meant for the HD consoles, then so be it. The Wii has around less than half of the Xbox 360's horsepower and around a 3rd of the PS3's horsepower, in terms of GPU clock speed at least. If they have to downgrade Unreal 3 to fit within the Wii's horsepower, it would kind of be like... not the Unreal 3 engine anymore anyway.
Seriously though, if he doesn't want to develop for the Wii, then let let him not develop for the Wii.

@wiiboy sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed
@topic-Unreal engine is important for the sole reason that most developers are using it to develop games. You have to ask yourself somthing. If you were a developer wouldn't you want to use the cheapest most high tech stuff possible?

Another thing...I am already about 75% sure that UE3 will show up on a game for the wii. Like he said "I'm sure one of our licensees will squeeze it down into the Wii." But even if they don't it won't really bother me because there are already engines that would work just fine on the wii like Vicious engine.
