Popularity Channel? A Wii Fanboy staff reaction

Miyamoto's keynote revealed that he is making a new Channel. This new Channel will allow people to compete in popularity contests with their Miis. Now, we don't have any concrete information other than that, nor do we have images of the new Channel, but isn't this enough for us to form an opinion on the concept? You bet it does!
Join us past the post break where we each discuss what we think about the new proposed channel.
Dave says: You know, the Everybody Votes Channel is crap. Sorry, but it's stupid in its current state. I checked it out the first day it was released (you might remember that post) and haven't looked back at it since. I could care less about it and, personally, this new Channel being proposed by Miyamoto sounds like the exact same thing. I mean, who wants to vote on Miis? What are we going to do, vote who's the most attractive Wii user in the world (based on their Mii, natch) or who could make the most accurate looking Mii of Hitler? Come on Nintendo, give us some meaningful content, something that we would like to put some time into and come back for some more. Not this worthless junk ...
Here Nintendo, I'll do your job for you. Here's the list of Channels we should get in the next 6 months:
- Nintendo Trivia (that could be fun, with all kinds of stats)
- Nintendo Power Channel (seriously, this should happen)
- DS Demo Download
- Wii Demo Download
- Original Content Channel (give us new downloadable games)
Jason says: For gamers like us, yeah, the Everybody Votes channel and this new "popularity" contest are meaningless junk, as Dave says. For the fifteen-year-old girls that are becoming more and more interested in this system, however, it's absolute gold. Wasn't it just recently that people were saying Nintendo hasn't been releasing enough casual content since Wii Sports started to fade? These may not be games, but they're something that will be enjoyed by a demographic found wholly outside of readers of this website. For the one true gaming crowd? Sit back, relax, and look forward to Super Paper Mario in early April. That game looks awesome.
Alisha says: I think it's a bit judgmental (and probably incorrect) to assume that the only people who are interested in non-gaming content are teenage girls. So many people these days -- even gamers who tend toward the "hardcore" label -- have two important things in common: a love for social networking and less time to play games. I know so many people who say things like, "wow, I'd love to play Twilight Princess or Final Fantasy XII, but I just don't have the time to put into it." If this is anything like the Everybody Votes channel, it seems perfectly in line with the market expansion Nintendo is shooting for. Maybe it's not for everyone, but the beauty of the thing is that it's not in your way, nor do you have to use it. If you want to ... there it is! The thing about these "casual" channels is that everyone assumes that it means that there will be no channels for the hardcore gamer. What's the Virtual Console, if not a channel for us? Also, there's no reason we won't see five new channels this year ... and one that will satisfy dedicated gamers will probably take a little more work than this. My advice is: give it some time.
JC says: I hate to say this as a fanboy, but I didn't buy any of that for a second. Miyamoto's been aching to design a game based around caricatures? The Mii channel as the culmination of his whole career? No way. Miyamoto is acting as a mascot here and pushing what Nintendo happens to be selling at the moment.
I thought the idea of Miis was great, back when they were going to be cute standardized character profiles used across games. But now the Miis are the point of the games? Even casual content needs more ... content.
I'm worried that Nintendo is going too far in the "casual-lifestyle-Brain Age" direction, and abandoning games entirely in favor of some kind of featureless MySpace.
Eric says: While I don't see this channel as a feature that will hold the interest of most hardcore gamers, I think there's just enough there to entertain the casual audience. If there's one thing people love to do on the internet, it's sharing themselves and their creations. Remember the dozens of "Look at this Mii I created" posts you had to suffer when the Wii first launched? This just adds another layer on top of Mii creation. What better way to compare our Mii caricatures than with a popularity contest?
Now all we need is a channel where we can throw them into a Thunderdome-esque gladiatorial pit and watch them battle each other to the death. Two go in, one comes out! Maybe that will satisfy the gamers who feel like their needs aren't being met with these "casuals channels."
You've read what we think, now it's time for you to tell us what you think? Comment away!

Thunderdome sounds awesome. The winner of the popularity channel should get some kind of prize. I've seen on message boards people comparing how accurate their predictions are, so it does affect some hardcore gamers.

The Everybody Votes channel was a nice change of pace, though a tad stupid. Let's hope there aren't many more like thaat.

I must have missed it when Miyamoto jumped his shark, cause this is a feature on the downhill side of a fantastic career. While encouraging designers to look at the elements that make games fun, and to continue returning to those fundamentals, it seems he has lost sight of the fact that it is still their combination that makes a great game.
As time goes on, it seems Nintendo is producing more and more product that combine fewer and fewer of those elements. While this simplifies gameplay and makes gaming more accessible to the mainstream, it alienates the "core" gamers that have historically driven the industry. The real question is what the members of the newly expanded market will do as they grow familiar with video-games:
Will they look for games to grow in complexity and move on to the more (careful reading comprehension word ahead) "mature" systems as they do?
Will Nintendo continue their trend of devolving games to the simplest elements and relegate themselves to being the industries gateway drug?
Will Nintendo level out and continue to offer a mix of games from Wario-ware complexity to epic Zeldas?
What happens to all of this when Miyamoto retires? Can we quit worrying about what his wife thinks?
No one knows but Nintendo.

Alisha got a lot right with her post in that the inclusion of this in no way takes from anyone's experience and only adds to the experience of those who use it. But the video games industry is definately a "what have you done for me lately?" kind of crowd. They only remember the last thing released, so until Nintendo follows this up with something gamer related, we'll have to listen to the interwebs fill up with PS360 fanboy drivel like Jason's "15-year old girls" comment. (Sorry, dude).
Chocolate Starfish @ Mar 8th 2007 6:49PM
I said "industries" but meant "industry's." Looks like I'm just another monkey at a keyboard afterall... =(
JC Fletcher @ Mar 8th 2007 7:03PM
People who want games from their game companies are PS360 fanboys now?
I've settled down somewhat, and now I can kind of see how interesting it is to emphasize social interaction via Mii stuff.
It's still strange that Nintendo, who not only seem to have missed the boat with online play, but seem to be AFRAID of boats, are coming up with everything they can to get people online, interacting and NOT playing Wii games together.
Enigma @ Mar 21st 2007 1:45PM
JC. Miyamoto really has been trying to push the character creation idea for a long time.
Even before the GDC he has made mention of it.

@8
I was afraid that wouldn't be clear enough.
It wasn't a shot at Jason (as his paragraph actually acknowledges that this is just for a different group than most of us), I just used his words as an example of what's to come over at Joystiq -- lots of generalizations and put-downs based on the latest offering from Nintendo being uber-casual.
The fact that my comment is, itself, a generalization about PS360 users requires a level of irony that's just not gonna translate in a forum post. My mistake.
milhouse007 @ Mar 8th 2007 7:27PM
Mii hot or not channel?
Billy_McBong @ Mar 8th 2007 7:58PM
you all need to be more grateful that Nintendo is giving us free content(even if it is aimed more at the casual gamers)
airpolgas @ Mar 8th 2007 8:32PM
In addition to Dave's list, I also want (seriously) to be able to buy food, particularly pizza, from a Wii Channel. They should also add Amazon as a sub-level of the Shopping Channel.
Mii loves the Everybody votes channel. My entire family check it every two days, and so far, I'm leading at 10-0!!!
Jason Wishnov @ Mar 8th 2007 10:08PM
In my defense, nowhere did I state that I view all "non-core gamers" as fifteen-year-old girls. This is merely the demographic that I feel a "popularity" contest would appeal to the most. I think it's coming off as an insult to non-gamers, but I literally meant girls who are in fact fifteen years of age and would thus enjoy such a feature.
Alisha Karabinus @ Mar 8th 2007 11:06PM
When I was fifteen, I would have -hated- that stuff, whereas now I find it somewhat interesting.
STAFF WARS! STAFF WARS! IT'S ON!
;)
Pawsie @ Mar 9th 2007 12:28AM
eh.. the wii is still just 6 or so months old...It has a long way to go... but they can rush it and push stuff out.. or they can take their time and make it correctly. Including online gaming and channels.
I don't see a problem with going at it slowly
Fort Max @ Mar 9th 2007 7:38AM
For the love of god, would a free demmo channel be too much to ask for?
I can't recall Nintendo ever giving their fans the toption to try before they buy. :(
reef @ Mar 9th 2007 9:53AM
Fort Max, the DS Download Stations allow you to play DS demos. I would love to see something similiar to this on the Wii.
Steve @ Mar 10th 2007 4:31PM
@ Jason Wishnov....my daughter is eleven and she has designed and redesigned a Mii for everyone and our dog over and over. Your on the money.
As far as a Mii channel, she would like it. I would rather feed Mii's to a pack of mutated pitbulls with grenade launching balls.
Steve 3.2 @ Mar 9th 2007 9:36PM
I hope Nintendo was tight lipped at the GDC because of the upcoming stock sale in Japan and not because they didn't have anything better than a 'Wii Popularity Contest' Channel to show off. While it's nice to have these extras, we need channels and features with a little more substance.
kayla @ Jun 5th 2007 2:08PM
im gettin kinda upset with these wii chanels. it takes them forever to make a new channel and when they finally do its worthless. i mean the everybody votes channel is okay but its nothin i would wanna do for more than a few minutes. plus it seems like they lie alot about when the channels are coming out. like with the mii popularity channel was supposively to come out in may and here it is in june and it still hasnt came out. and to be honest that doesnt seem to interesting either. if they wanna give us a channel give us something that we would use for more than 5 minutes! it would be nice if we could get a media channel so we could listen to music and watch dvds. but thatll never happen the way things are going now. i know they tried to make the wii unique and more creative than the other systems, in fact thats why i bought it in the first place, but their creativeness turned out to be pretty boring.
