So what is it about the Nintendo DS that does it for you? Are you a die-hard Nintendo fan, praising the big N above all others? Or is it just the DS itself, with those sleek dual screens and array of designs? The games? Something else entirely, perhaps, or maybe a combination of many reasons?
Let's talk about the best aspects of the DS on this fine (we hope!) Friday morning. Save the complaints -- maybe we'll talk about those another day -- and just take some time to share our stories about everything that keeps us coming back for more.

actually i love all the things of my DS...EXCEPT for the f***ing d-pad and his "very difficult to do" diagonals -_-
Loban @ Mar 2nd 2007 9:41AM
The slick look of the DS Lite and the games did it for me.

Its the games for me, I like weird wacky stuff. My boyfriend has a Playstation 2 and there are alot...alot of games for it, but I have ahard time finding ones I enjoy, I'm always scared to buy any because being that there are so many games I don't know much about I don't want to walk out of the store spending my hard earned money on trash. The only game for playstation that I have played and love is Katamari. I heart Katamari. The DS just offers more titles that are fun and have weird concepts. Plus its portable ;)

It's funny because I had a DS when they first came out and sold it a few weeks later because I wasn't really feeling it (games were kinda lame at the time). Since then, I've had a White Lite and just picked up a Onyx one. With Castlevania, Lunar Knights and the new Mario Bros. I've been playing this thing non stop. I love that they keep some of the "past" in the DSLite games. Not all graphics, not all glitz, just simple awesome gameplay.

Games, prices, slim design, awesome touch technology. It seriously is the future of gaming. PSP-fannies say it sucks because it doesn't have movie player options, music player options, and it has bad graphics. The fun factor on games are high, you don't have to sit there and stare at a loading screen every stage. If nintendo wanted to have good graphics, it'll be the hottest thing on the Market. Awesome graphics + Touch screen, then again, people would just complain about the high price of the handheld and how long it takes to load.
BrainAgeFan @ Mar 2nd 2007 10:33AM
Well, it is the hottest thing on the market as of now... but it would be the "next" hottest thing on the market.

For me it was all about the games, and the assumed sturdiness of it (being a Nintendo product). Even after part of one of the hinges broke off of my Phat, I didn't hesitate to buy a pink Lite on the day they came out. My Phat held up really well until the crack (and still plays perfectly fine) and my Lite continues to do so (as do my original Gameboy, Gameboy color, and my little sisters' micros). It's a great system with innovative&simple gameplay that actually focuses on games, unlike its glitzy competitors. Does anyone even buy those mini-DVDs for PSPs?
Fox @ Mar 2nd 2007 11:41AM
The games for me, sure the hardware is nice, and the lite is slick, but what keeps me coming back to the DS more than anything else is awesome games. Whether it's shouting "objection" into the mic, or going back to Advance Wars for another battle, the DS always provides awesome entertainment for me on the go, or just sitting in bed. Couldn't be happier with it!
With all due respect,
Fox

Well, I bought it because of New Super Mario Bros and Brain Age. I still prefer sudoku on the DS over on the pc based or simple paper based. Now after having finish Mario Kart DS and picking up Final Fantasy III, I play all the time, even at our terrible 3 minute red lights.
It still embodies what a "handheld" should be. I can be playing, close it, pop it in my pocket, go to work, pull it out, play more, and so on. There is no chance in hell the PSP would fit in my pocket, because i got that logitech case, since the screen seems highly vulnerable.
I also appreciate that they kept it basic. Most companies seem to think every consumer just wants an "all-in-one" device. That's ridiculous. If I want to listen to music or watch a movie, i bring my iPod. Phone calls/text messaging: phone, obviously. If I want to play games: ds lite.
Ironically, the three devices combined are much easier to tote about than my psp.

The most obvious thing is : it's SO affordable!
Therefore, I don't care carrying it with me everywhere I go.
Let's not forget that games are cheap too! Got 8 of 'em :
New Super Mario Bros
Tony Hawk's american sk8land
Metroid
Super mario 64
Brain Age
Lunar Dragon Song
Need for speed most wanted (SUCKS!)
MARIO KART DS !!!!!!!
:D awesome games in general, awesome gameplay, great battery life, great looks, online gameplay, etc...

So far, I've put 170 hours into Advance Wars Dual Strike, the title I keep coming back to on the DS. Does that answer the question?
David Pawlowski @ Mar 2nd 2007 4:57PM
i like it because i do
Alisha Karabinus @ Mar 2nd 2007 5:05PM
@#11 (Matt) -- my taller half is the same way about that game. There's one level he keeps playing over and over to get everything right.
atsui @ Mar 2nd 2007 5:34PM
I broke one of my arms and the ds all the sudden seemed more appealing. So I did some research then bought it. I mainly got games that rely on the stylus to be played so I could play games with one arm. Zoo keeper, a game a lot like bejeweled is perfect for the ds since you don't have to press up left, left, left, up, up, left, etc just to get to the piece you want to move. Also the fact I can slip it in my pocket and has a screen to protect it with an awesome designed sleep mode. That's why I like it. I use to think bad of it, but hey, I've actually been more interested since the DS lite, just my broken arm did me in.

Before, I bought my DS Lite, I used to play the demo machines at Gamestop alot. When I finally got it, I was thrilled with it. I only got 2 games now but once my situation gets better, bring on the games. Prices are really good and gameplay really makes it a worth and GBA backwards compatible really extends my game library.

My love of video games is all about the actual games, but the redesign really took the DS from a nice system to a must have one. It's like that little girl from next door who went away for the summer and came back looking like a cover model. (The only thing I've love to see 'fixed' is getting GBA games to fit all the way into the system.)
I don't think any game system before has had the true variety of games that DS owners can now enjoy. Whether you want some quick logic puzzles (Brain Age), classic platforming (NSMB), rhythm games (Elite Beat Agents), or just a virtual pet (Nintendogs), there's almost something for everyone. And if it's not there now, it's coming!
Wilerson @ Mar 3rd 2007 6:45AM
I just *love* the 8/16 bit era, and most games on the DS bring that "classical" feeling back, with actual technology. I have fun playing the DS. That's enough for me.
#11: I have only 93 hours on AWDS. :(
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Mar 4th 2007 10:12AM
I like touch screed. I like ad-hoc wireless. I like game selection. I love Tetris. I love Sonic. I love Meteos. I love Castelvania.
I hate mic. I hate Metroid for I do not have enough fingers. I hate Mario for it is stupid, boring and unplayable. And I hate myself for I have bought the games on some idiotic old timer's advice (and that's categorization for 90% of all review).
strider_mt2k @ Mar 4th 2007 10:32AM
The engaging gameplay and the revised design of the DS Lite.
An enjoyment that I can only liken to my original Gameboy experience.
Not the most advanced thing out there, but the one that grabbed me.
