Everybody Votes, one week later

One week has passed since Nintendo sneakily updated the Wii with the Everybody Votes Channel, and the polls are still open on the channel itself. We'd like to say it's been a success, but half the time we go in to try to vote, either massive wait times make us reconsider the idea of voting, or we suffer through just to participate in this democratic process only to be told there's an error. Oh well. We can only hope that it'll get better. After all ... hey, it's free, amirite? And it's not as though it's all been loading times and errors, because we've thrown our hats in on a few questions.
But since we've all had a week of opportunity to fiddle, we thought we'd spend some time talking about Nintendo's latest and what may be yet to come for the new channel.
Sure, the execution is not perfect. We definitely have some issues with the painfully slow task of navigating the channel, but it seems like that can easily be improved through the magic of glowing blue updates. There is, however, something of a schism in the fanboy community about the best philosophical path for the new channel. Some prefer the irreverence of random questions; we're all about the current war of red vs. blue that is currently raging on the Wii. Others see a different potential here ... the potential of millions of fanboy voices clamoring to tell Nintendo how they feel.
There are certainly issues that are continuing sources of disagreement between Nintendo and their staunch supporters, who stoically bear things like the Big N's dedication to safety in online gaming. The payoff is worth it. We get great games and usually dependable (and sometimes amazing) customer service. Even better, however, is the indication that Nintendo actually listens already. Despite the gems of the GameCube, that was a dark time for many Nintendo fans, but many of the biggest complaints seem to be addressed with the Wii -- at least, potentially. We're still waiting to see what will happen with the Wii and online gaming, but we've seen with the DS that free service can be pretty satisfactory. But that's not all when it comes to the potential of the new channel. Others see the seeds of a WiiSpaceJournal fusion tying together a world of Nintendo fans. They're definitely giving us the tools for such a community, what with built-in photo tools and the streamlined browsing. Perhaps the Everybody Votes Channel is a baby step in that direction, and for once, the idea of an online social community seems tempting, since it will be peopled with Miis. On that note, we must say that the Mii animations in the EVC are too cute for words.
As it stands today, one week after it became available with no fanfare, the Everybody Votes channel is just an extra, a sometimes charming (and sometimes not) distraction, or a way to kill a few minutes while you're kicking around the Wii menu. We'll watch and see if it develops into anything else!
To all of you: where do you stand on the potential of the Everybody Votes Channel ... or is it even an issue for you? Certainly some of us aren't terribly concerned with the greater implications of occasional Wii community polls, and we'll take what we get on those days when we feel like polling. But if you see the new channel as a platform for the gaming community to speak out, then we'd love to know about it -- and just what it is that you want Nintendo to know.

Wait times? Errors? I haven't had any of those...just a disappointment in the lame questions. I wonder how much the Big N is making selling this info to advertising agencies? Sneaky little devils...
I just wish they would use this system to find out what the Wii fanbase is looking for from the system...you know, which Virtual Console games we're most looking forward to, what we do with our system, which type of control scheme we appreciate more...and then use that information to get us what we're really looking for.
John Doe @ Feb 20th 2007 8:20PM
I havent had any errors, and its pretty fast. I have two issues:
1)Please, more that 4 questions
2)Please, if there are multiple miis, allow multiple controllers
mepaco @ Feb 20th 2007 8:58PM
I have to echo the previous two posts as I haven't had any errors, wait times, and it has been very fast. It just needs more questions.
Gabriel Jordan @ Feb 20th 2007 9:29PM
Ditto here... no errors/slowdowns. In fact, all online activity has become much snappier ever since the update that day on my Wii. Used to be Opera and Shop channels were hit or miss on whether they would connect or error on the first try... but no longer. Any body else had that experience?
and yes, they need more q's.
Ethan @ Feb 20th 2007 9:52PM
The only problem I have is the amount of time you must wait. If they really wanted a voting channel, they should have about 2 a day, not 2 a week.
And whats up with the worldwide poll? The first one said 3 days or something, and this one makes us wait 12 days! Jeez I think most people will finish voting after the third day!
Gabe @ Feb 20th 2007 10:23PM
No problem of errors or waiting time on my end. But I do agree with Ethan, if they want us to vote they should put more questions there and have the questions be related to gaming of some sort.
KirbyMeister @ Feb 20th 2007 11:09PM
What errors or waiting times? It's like 10 seconds from pressing Start to seeing the list of polls. I just want some more damn polls already.
WhackMushrooms @ Feb 20th 2007 11:09PM
total waste of space if you ask me...they should integrate its functionality into post game play for "how did you like this game?" type questions rather than the simple "for everyone" question kinda of thing.
however, ask anyone who reads the USA Today what part of it they remember the most .. its always that goofy poll question ;).
if it goes the pure market research and response route however they would stand to gain with potential marketers and advertisers if they start giving out Wii points for time spent on this channel.
So many different directions .. but as a hardcore gamer i must say i would rather save those blocks for VC content.
Carlos @ Feb 20th 2007 11:11PM
60% of you don't know how to whistle a song??? what's wrong with you, people?? haha
i think this channel it's not very useful but i find myself going to it everytime i'm about to play. I like the random stupid questions, but i'd like some "serious" questions for us gamers even if it's just once in a while, i see potential in that.
Oh, and no errors or long loading times here, on this or any of the channels :D
Abdon @ Feb 21st 2007 12:45AM
no errors or slowdowns either... I used to have them, it used to take like 4 or 5 tries before I could get in to the shop channel.. then I got my router closer to the Wii, after that I've had no problems at all.
Kev @ Feb 21st 2007 1:30AM
You guys are a bunch of paranoid weenies. No marketing research firm with an ounce of sense would pay for results of these questions.
Tom @ Feb 21st 2007 2:00AM
They're joking about the wait times and errors. It's a clever subtle commentary on REAL voting in the American political system. For example: Some shill from *Big Candy* was trying supress my vote for "Flowers" on Valentines Day. Flowers are more romantic, dammit! I'm feeling disenfranchised already from all this voter intimidation.
reef @ Feb 21st 2007 4:24AM
I've never had any load times or errors whatsoever. I think the interface is what makes it fun - it'd be boring if it was simply checking off checkboxes on some random form. Dragging the Miis and such may take a bit longer, but for some reason it puts me in a little Nintendo trance :)
I don't expect Nintendo to use this service for any kind of 'serious' questions about VC games or what not - it's just a fun little diversion.
colin.barnette @ Feb 26th 2007 5:39AM
No problems here either. Honestly though, aren't we all just waiting for Miiverse? Esesntially a sim game using the Miis? Is there potential for this? And is there any word on internet connection gaming?
mutantmagnet @ Feb 21st 2007 8:56AM
When I saw this channel I thought Nintendo would eventually throw in customer service related questions as well. After consideration I think that's a terrible idea.
Instead Nintendo or 2nd/2rd party developers should create a seperate channel called Game Development channel. This can be a hybrid public/private portal where Developers can all communicate with each other about ideas to push the Wii to its limits in game design. To reach such sensitive private areas you'll need a devkit and a key pass regulated by Nintendo.
The public portion which all Wiis can access would be the domain where customers and developers can talk to each other about peripherals and games.
Everybody Votes should stay the way it is without any customer/corporate hang ups fouling the mood of going in there and getting a chance to learn how well you are in touch with the rest of the Wii community.
Cheswick @ Feb 21st 2007 2:50PM
I like it. Its a nice distraction but seriously only 3 questions at a time is kinda stupid. They should have 7 questions at once so they still stay up for a week but you get a new question every day.
Frankie @ Feb 21st 2007 9:26AM
It's great. Just another reason to turn the damn mii on. The mainstream Wii users will eat those random questions up. Hell, I'm addicted to the predicting part.
justin @ Feb 21st 2007 9:33AM
no error codes or wait times in Pa at all. Actually my 8 year old finds it fun what other peoples answers are. So for the younger crowd it seems to be a good idea.
Loban @ Feb 21st 2007 10:02AM
I love how the authors of these articles just assume everyone is having the same problems they are. It must be your router is something, cause I've never had any problems with the voting channel. It runs smooth and fast and I've not seen one error.
Dave @ Mar 5th 2007 7:55PM
I haven't had any errors either. It's been nice and smooth and it loads quickly for me. I would have to agree about the lameness of the questions though. Some more interesting fare is definitely in order.
circa1978 @ Feb 21st 2007 11:45AM
My 4 year old laughs every time I grab my Mii's hair and drop him for a vote. Pure entertainment. Oh and no errors or wait times and I'm on "lite" internet (256KB/s).
Tim Buchheim @ Feb 21st 2007 2:30PM
I've never had a problem with errors or load times on Everybody Votes. The only problems I ever have are on the weather forecast channel ("Unable to get forecast, press Start to begin" or something like that on the "preview" you get before hitting start) and on the shopping channel (several times over the weekend it would just hang while connecting, and I had to power off my Wii)
I wish they'd have more questions. It's sort of annoying to have to wait a couple days between questions. They should have at least one per day.
Cole @ Feb 21st 2007 2:42PM
"Can you whistle a song"
I live in Texas and I don't have this question. Are there different questions for regions?
hmmmmmm
Have fun
Cole

@#9: You know how to whistle, don't you? Just put your lips together and blow...
Jack Doyle @ Feb 22nd 2007 9:47AM
I think the channel is really neat. One thing I would like to see is the ability (not just with this channel) to see stats, etc, on the Miis that have been sent to you by friends. I want to see my buddy's Wii Sports Bowling top score, or how my friends voted in the polls, etc.
It's nice seeing the results, but if you could see how friends voted, etc, that would be really cool. Or try to beat his bowling score or get a higher skill in tennis.
Jack Doyle @ Feb 22nd 2007 9:47AM
Couple of other tidbits, sorry.
I had the errors for the first few days with the channel, but I am not seeing it anymore. In fact, the wait times while it reads data and receives data is down to about 5-10 seconds.
I would like to see more than four questions, and I would like to see them updated more often. Maybe the addition of an hourly poll or something like that. Or even every few hours. So that when you go to the channel there is always something to do.
The way it stands now, you have questions that end in 2, 4, 6 and 10 days respectively. That means for the next two days, you have no reason to even look at that channel if you have already voted.
