Wii creates new party trend
There's an interesting article up over at Reuters which discusses how the Wii has become the guest of honor in the new genre of parties cropping up across the country. Now, we can't argue that, as every time we get together with friends, the Wii becomes the focal point (however, we wouldn't call it a party so much as turning Wii Sports: Bowling into a drinking game). One Kris Smith calls it "the equivalent of a man Tupperware party."The article goes on to discuss a homemade tournament held by Smith, as well as the sheer amount of these kind of parties that have been cropping up across the country. Have you held a Wii tournament? Do you often engage in this kind of Wii party?

In my university house of 4 people, 3 of us own a Wii. At any point in the day, at least one of them is on. I think we are going to grab a copy of WarioWare pretty soon.
When friends come over, it's "Where's Wii Sports? Who wants to bowl!?!" We also have an advanced rule set detailing how many drinks an open frame or a gutter ball is worth (2 and 4), and things get interesting after about the first hour. Let me tell you, if you think Golf is hard, try playing on a Friday night at 3 in the morning!
I'm ever thankful for the wriststraps!

I haven't had a "WiiParty" yet, but I did bring it along to New Years at the Neighbors. Big hit. Now neighborhood kids are asking to be babysat at our place.

I get together with my friends about once or twice a week for one of these wii parties. They are pretty sweet and everyone has a great time. My favorite thing is when someone who hasn't played before starts telling me how stupid the thing is, then they play for about an hour and say "I think I'm going to buy one of these."

As stated in the post, when friends and family come by the Wii is certainly a focal point, but I wouldn't say that I've hosted any "Wii Parties". I tend to think of more than 4 guests when I think "party", but whatever. My Wii is host to over 50 guest Miis if that's any indicator of how successfully it's gone over here...

I had a Wii Party when it first came out. It was a BIG hit. Funny thing is whenever anyone comes over to play Wii sports gets the attention. ExciteTruck is second, superswing and zelda are never touched.

I've certainly had a Wii party. Every time any friends have parties, the Wii is also invited. (In fact, I think that I am just invited as a way to transport the Wii...)

I had a Wiii party about a week ago with a total of 10 people (2 guys and 8 girls), with lots of food and drink and music. I started off by getting everyone to make a Mii. The girls loved this. One girl said she was going to get one before she even had a chance to make her own Mii or play any games. We played a drinking game so that the winners had to take shots of tequila or their drink of choice. It was lucky I had 4 Wiimotes.
I planned 3 games for the night. After making the Miis we had a Wii Tennis tournament, then followed it up by Wii bowling making sure everyone got a chance to play. We then played the first 10 single player levels of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz by passing the Wiimote around the room until everyone had a shot at the level, and then we went to the next one. If you fell off you had to pass the Wiimote to the person next to you.
After that everyone wanted to play Wii Boxing, but I only had one nunchuk so it was single player. Then they wanted to play tennis again. We ended up finishing about 3AM. It was a really cool fun night.

I had it on at Thanksgiving and at New Years, as well as taking it down to Florida for Christmas. I haven't specifically had a "Wii Party," but tomorrow's Super Bowl extravaganza should be a golden opportunity.

I've had a few of these now. Especially fun to see all the non-gamers step up and play. Rarely do any of them fight it.

We're having a Wii Party of sorts: The 'Wiimbledon' Wii Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam is April 14th 07. Anyone in the area (Netherlands) should check out: http://upcoming.org/event/171178/
