The Wii-order experience

It's Wii preorder day! But is it such a cause for celebration? Unfortunately, it seems a bare few fanfolk walked away from their local EB or GameStop this morning clutching a receipt for the Wii. Reader e-mails are pouring in, lamenting the reserve numbers -- which in some cases were even lower than the number of PS3s allocated to a given store. Disappointment is rampant. For those of us who arrived early to spend hours cold lamping with our brethren, it was a tense morning, because no one really knew what would happen -- except that some people would go home empty-handed.
Reader Matthew Ryan snagged some pics at his EB Games in Virginia, near Washington, D.C. That store had 30 systems available for reserve (far more than many other stores), but nearly double that showed up in hopes of slapping money down on a system. And this blogger snagged a few shots herself at a nearby store. Check out the full story after the jump, where we've tucked a few of Matthew's pictures as well.
Alisha's Friday the 13th Wii-order diary:

7:38 a.m.: Arrive at EB Games. Only three people already there. Score! Time enough to take a quick detour for coffee.
7:47 a.m.: Arrive at coffee shop for a white chocolate mocha. Mmm. Tasty! Just the thing for hanging out in the crisp (read: chilly) morning air.
7:56 a.m.: Suddenly remember that our local store only got three PS3s for preorder after employee reserves. Unnamed source on East coast indicated that stores would get 32 Wiis for preorders, but he'd also said 16 PS3s. Hmm. Quick math. Two times three is but six ... time to hurry back to the store just in case the numbers are low!
8:05 a.m.: Spend two minutes raving and swearing at the car that neglected to turn on a perfectly legal yellow light at a busy intersection. Safety? There are consoles to preorder here, people! Priorities!
8:09 a.m.: Arrive back at store to find that nothing has changed. Am still fourth in line and thus probably safe. Time to settle in with a book. Also of note: three of the four of us are female.
8:10 a.m.: Commence to checking watch every thirty seconds. Read exactly four words of book. Fret. Rinse. Repeat.
8:32 a.m. Subdued crowd begins quietly chatting when fifth person arrives. He reports that he called the store last night and they expected to have fourteen units for reserves. We all breathe a sigh of relief. One woman has been there since 6 a.m. and she was the first. She's there to reserve the console for her 15 year old son and to pick up a Mom of the Year nod in passing.
8:38 a.m.: Random guy stops to check Alltel store next door and asks what we are all doing. Upon learning, he joins the line as number six. Smart guy!
8:48 a.m.: Another intrepid consumer arrives, a chatty fellow who is there to reserve the system for his young granddaughter. He says that if he doesn't get it today, he's prepared to pay up to $1000 to see that she gets what she wants. He was told that our store would have twenty units. We are all further relieved.
9:01 a.m.: Conversation picks up. The grandfather offers everyone coffee. First EB employee arrives and passes out lists of release games and Wii accessories to those who need them. We explain some of the items to the mother, who is working off sketchy instructions from her son. Employee confirms fourteen systems available.

9:16 a.m.: More people arrive in a sudden burst, bringing the number to 13. One guy, an amusing fellow reminiscent of the late Mitch Hedberg, has driven in from a nearby college town with only one store. By 3:00 a.m., he says, they were up to 17 people outside. When he left to join us several hours later, the numbers had climbed to 50. Sounds like we were definitely among the lucky ones. People spend some time discussing console launches of yore, like the N64 and the Xbox.
9:32 a.m.: The comedian is regaling everyone with stories of How Trauma Center is So Incredibly Awesome. He's pretty adament about everyone reserving the game. Spirits are high. We're all getting a system. It was probably the most cheerful preorder wait in the nation. The mother and another guy make sure everyone has their numbers down.

9:47 a.m.: The time is fast approaching. Unlucky person number 15 arrives and those of us in the chosen group eye him with sympathy until he announces he's not even there for the Wii. Not there for the Wii? Scandalous.
10:00 a.m.: A few other poor souls are arriving, but we're in! We quickly form up in line at the register.
10:11 a.m.: Mission accomplished!
Matthew Ryan's preorder experience doesn't look quite so jovial, however. In his pictures, everyone looks very serious -- focused, even. There's a definite air of tension in the shots. From what we're hearing, that must have been more typical across the country, as more and more people learned that Wii preorders were turning out to be quite rare.

Must have been nice to spend the time inside. And are those ... chairs? Some people have all the luck.

Some of these people are not going to get a Wii today. That makes us sad.

These people look like they're taking their preorders seriously.
Share your own experience, good or bad, in the comments. We want to hear about everyone's day, though from our e-mails so far, we expect more bad stories than good. One reader even said Wii preorders were sold at their store at the same time as PS3, though it seems strange that no one heard about it. And several people drove from store to store, ending up number twelve when the allotment was eleven, fifteen when there were fourteen systems, and so on. It's not the best day to be a Nintendo fan, but rejoice! Surely there will be enough systems at launch, particularly if you select your retailer with care.
[Thanks to Matthew for sending us his photos, and to everyone who's e-mailed us so far!]

i got one at eb. only about 10 poeple in front of me and this was at 945 15 min before the store opens. guy at the store said there were 18 preorders
Ben Woodrow @ Oct 20th 2006 4:33PM
I thought that there were 6m units and no shortages, and there might even be 9m if Nintendo plays their cards right
Why are people so desperate? Why do they need to pay $50(this is about £25, right)and why haven't you guys been able to preorder them for ages(August September) like us in England(Bromley, just out side south east London)?
I'm fourteen, english and naive
Me @ Oct 13th 2006 3:28PM
they had 30 wii preorders at my gamestop in cerritos. I got mine...only waited 30 minutes for the store to open. Im guessing there is gonna be so many at launch it wont matter if u preorder.
Crzylink @ Oct 13th 2006 3:27PM
I failed. School let out because of a threat so I thought I might get lucky. Didn't get to the store until 10:10.
Alisha Karabinus @ Oct 13th 2006 3:28PM
There will very likely be PLENTY of units on November 19th. I'm hoping that what some people are being told -- that what went out today is it for EB/Gamestop -- is just employees popping off. Considering that Nintendo is making Wiis like bunnies make more bunnies, I doubt anyone will have much of a problem.
I preorder because hey, I can always cancel my preorder.
Corey @ Oct 13th 2006 3:31PM
I arrived at a GameStop at 9:50 only to see that they had already opened. When I walked in, the person at the back of the line said they only had 20 units and us at the back of the line were unlucky. Fortunately, there's a mall right down the street from GameStop (about a 5 min. drive), so off I went. I got to the mall and stood outside the EB Games waiting for it to open. I was about the 20th in line, and I sucessfully pre-ordered one =) The lady who waited on me said that she had 16 left, and there looked to be 15-20 left in line, so I'm not sure how many people got sent home empty-handed.
Justin @ Oct 13th 2006 3:31PM
#2 it's a 50 dollar deposit toward the console... you aren't paying $50 + $250 to get a box on launch day.
anyways, showed up an hour early, was 19th in line... but they had 28 units :) lots and lots of people were turned away @ 10am
Ted @ Oct 13th 2006 3:32PM
I got at the GAmeStop at 8:30. There were only 5 people in front of me, but when the store opened(they opened about 15 minutes early), there were close to 40 (FORTY!!!) people in line.
It's a shame our GameStop only had 12 allotments.
May God have mercy on their souls.
Interestingly enough, there were boys, girls, teens, elderly, and military personnel all lining up to pay
$50 for a slip of paper that said they would get their hands on a Wii on Nov. 19!!!
Erich @ Oct 13th 2006 3:34PM
I dunno, demand for this system is pretty big. I won't be surprised if it's completely sold out from launch til Christmas.
As well, I think ebgames etc. are playing it safe by only allocating maybe half of their expected allotment in order to avoid the xbox360 debacle. As well, they might be allocating it to different regions within the Americas in order to meet demands for different areas.
JacKal @ Oct 13th 2006 4:07PM
man the allocations are really strange… I’ve seen reports of stores getting 20-30… when I went to GameStop this morning here in gainesville, fl, there were only 8!!! eight!@!!! I was around 12th in line and so I am very sad I was not able to get one…
RevJonathan @ Oct 13th 2006 3:45PM
First to those of you who failed, I'm sorry for you. I did a brand new gamestop, that was the way to go, no one knew it was there!
I arrived at about 8:55 and was the fourth one there. We all had a pool going on how many they had. I guessed 9, they had 8.
I preordered a Wii, a second wiimote, a second nunchuck, and twilight princess.
Definately explained what super-moms needed to get, they were very thankful.
One guy showed up who had gone to an EB and the line was too long. Lucky fella there, he was 8 of 8!
I really hope that I will get it, and there won't be a PWii-order debacle.
Can I get starts for Pwii-order? haha.
RevJonathan @ Oct 13th 2006 3:46PM

Alisha Karabinus @ Oct 13th 2006 3:50PM
I ended up only preordering three games: Rayman, Zelda, and Red Steel, though I want to get my hands on a few more. The man of the house fixed me with a dark stare this morning and indicated that I should probably not reserve the entire launch lineup.
It's probably a good thing he said that... I had a mighty list clutched in my grubby little hand. Besides the guy singing Trauma Center's praises, most people were talking about Zelda. One guy (and the EB clerk) were both raving about Rayman. What about y'all, with the games?
Spex @ Oct 13th 2006 3:52PM
I had no choice but to run home after school off the bus to see if any pre-orders where available at the two stores I visit. Sadly, there were none, but that's no matter. I got a smart mom, who had already registered online so she could pre-order online when the time frame comes.
Chris @ Oct 13th 2006 3:57PM
WHOA guys! I came to EB Gamestop at 9:50 AM and there was already a line 30 people deep. I waited in line for an hour and a half and was able to get a Wii one off from their 32 unit limit for preorders. Remember, that Nintendo is shipping out twice as many Wiis to the states as there were PS2s back in 2000. If the PREORDERS sold out in an hour and a half imagine how fast those things will fly off the shelves when all the marketing sets in.
But also, I live in a popular city. Maybe if you live in the middle of nowhere you could be a lot more lucky when it comes to Wii preordering. Don't wait around, call your nearest EB Gamestop now if you want any chance of getting a Wii at launch.

I was first in line at my EBGames. I've paid in full for Zelda TP when it was first announced for GCN, and switched it over to Wii as soon as I could. I really need something to play it on this Christmas. My EBGames only had 10 Wiis, and I have ticket number 2!!! I'm assuming the cashier rang himself up one first. I had to pick at everyone for a minute though, while the cashier was looking around for a SKU I asked him "What are you doing, I just want to buy a PS2." Him and half the line look at me and the cashier tells me "YOU, Leave my store now!" Obviously we were playing and I still got my Wii preordered.
bc @ Oct 13th 2006 4:26PM
Matthew Ryan's pics come from one of my local hellhole/closet/rude employee factory EB's. Glad I didn't cut work to wait in line for naught. Helps that I already have a pre-order, from Amazon's all-too-brief window on 9/15.
Meph @ Oct 13th 2006 4:05PM
Damn near 40 preorders at the GameStop near me and them things flew off the shelves like bandaids at a hemophiliac treatment ward...
Kinda funny cause the town I live in people don't camp out for CRAP but them employees damn near lasered a hole in me just for even asking about it... an ugly scene

here is my story:
I had to work so, i had my wife get up and get in line. she showed up at 9:20 and was #17. At 9:35 manager said they only had 16 units. She calls and I leave work and head to the nearest store. Arrive at 9:45, none left. I jump in my car and head to another store in a mall. I locate the directory and find the location of the store on the map and run over there. They had moved to the lower floor so i run downstairs and get in line at 9:55. Three people show up behind me. The manager sees me and says there are none left. I was so upset and then the girl in front of me says that one of the guys in line is with a friend and the manager has the count wrong so i stay in line. I got #16 of 16.
rob @ Oct 13th 2006 4:17PM
Up here in more remote ND, my store had 12, 4 gone to employees, so really 8. I was there when the mall opened at 8 expecting a line to get in to wait at the store that opened at 10, but nobody there. By the time the store opened there were 6 of us, then some kid drifted in, then some lady came from another store that was already sold out and was the ninth and turned away.
Long story short, because I briefly left for Mcdonald's breakfast I became #2, but got my preorder. Generally I was surprised there weren't a lot more people there.
M. Pino @ Oct 13th 2006 5:02PM
The main store in Tallahassee had about 32 units.
TVGenius @ Oct 13th 2006 4:22PM
GS in Yuma, AZ had 14 (one went to employee). I was #3 in line at 8:05 (store opened on time at 10:00am), first two were there approx. 6:15am. At 9:50, #11 showed up, and when I left nobody else had. As of 9:30, there was nobody at the EB across the street (we were discussing the fact we all hate EB with a vengeance, and we don't know what the other EB across town was like. Seems like most were just doing the system, and a couple games (which most of us had done weeks before). Only one in line had already gone in for a PS3, though that may be because the store forgot to call their preorder list for the PS3, and only the people who got the email (or found out otherwise) knew about the presale, which is why they didn't sell out their 16 until about 4pm.
Valaris @ Oct 13th 2006 4:20PM
Had to work today, and I just called 4 of the EB/Gamestops in the area, all are gone. *Grumbles at 1st shift job* Oh well, I'll likely be able to pick one up on Launch day. I have a Best Buy, 2 Walmarts, 2 Targets, and 4 EB/Gamestops I can hit up.
William Crabtree @ Oct 13th 2006 4:23PM
8:38 a.m.: Random guy stops to check Alltel store next door and asks what we are all doing. Upon learning, he joins the line as number six. Smart guy!
HAHA! LMAO! That cracked me up! I can just visualize this!
Anywho... I have posted elsewhere..but I got there at 9:00 am and nobody was standing outside.
Cool..nobody doing the XBox360 mile long line thing.
So I sat in my heated car until about 9:40 when an older lady go out of a car and stood at the door. After about 5 minutes her husband got out and stood with her.
Looked like he had walking problems so no beef with not standing with his wife for a few minutes.
I got out of my car when he did pretty much and went up stood behind them. The couple said their 19 yr old grandson wanted nothing for Christmas but the Wii. So here were these grandparents, wish mine would do that!, standing out in 30ish degree weather for their grandson.
As soon as I got out at least 2 other people got out of cars out of fear of not getting a Wii.
One guy said he got off of work at 2 a.m. and then drove an hour home to cmoe and sit in the parking lot just to make sure he got one.
Thats dedication!
Another was a guy that previously worked at a GameStop and still had insider friends that relayed info to him. He had a hand full of DS stuff to trade in.
We all chatted about Wii stuff..rumors, games, etc. I was the knowledgable one! I helped the grandparents understand a bit about everything. They had no clue on the price or whatever about the Wii. I helped them select a game that their grandson would like, Red Steel of course! They were really nice. Thankful for the help and very chipper spirits!
One guy said he traveled all over Ohio when the PS3 preorders were going on and returned with nothing. Felt bad for the guy..maybe he's going to be a new Nintendo guy now!
The 4th or 5th guy had no clue what was going on. He just wanted to trade some games in and to buy a game.
You would have thought we were all friends the way everyone was acting to each other. The gentleman, who was by himself!!!!, opened the store to let the line of about 13 people in to preorder. All calmly, nicely, and professionally we all kept in the single form line to the desk to preorder.
Great experience! I almost wish I would have got the grandparents names..or even seen if I knew their grandson..just so we could hook up later for a game of Wii Bowling or something!
jdb @ Oct 13th 2006 4:23PM
Made it to the EB Games here in Boulder, CO around 7 AM and ended up 17th in line. Turns out that we had 3 people standing outside starting 10 PM the night before, but two ended up leaving -- the remaining one stayed all night though and was the first consumer preorder. Turns out that 4 preorders went to EB employees first, and then an additional 24 consumer preorders were taken.
Paid in full for the Wii, Zelda, and another Wiimote + nunchuk set. Less than $390 total including tax -- sure beats those other systems.
Ended up with 20 or so people in line that were turned away. The store manager feels Gamestop corporate was just playing it safe with allocation numbers, however, and mentioned that people could probably show up on launch day and still walk away with one. I hope that ends up being true, although I'm still glad I preordered mine. The store manager very much wants to do a midnight launch as well, and said he's going to try very hard at getting such approved. Awesome, only 37 more days to go....
Chris @ Oct 13th 2006 4:24PM
My experience was pretty unique, because a Marine home from Iraq encountered our line while he was mall-walking. It was a harrowing experience, and I suggest you all read the diary I wrote about it below.

I walked out of EB with Wii pre-order in hand, but significantly less excited than I was when I showed up.
Al @ Oct 13th 2006 4:57PM
Plenty at launch? I heard that from many people and MS reps before the 360 launch and then wasted every morning of my life (4 am launch day) for two months trying to find one. Before you go attacking MS for an admittedly botched launch (and pr campaign afterwards), I believe that Nintendo's launch numbers are very similar to the 360s. I have had every system since Pong, and while I love Nintendo, don't forget that the original systems with chronic shortages at launch were Nintendos.
rob @ Oct 13th 2006 4:25PM

I couldn't make it, as I was at work, but my wife stood in line for an hour at our local GameStop.
She was 10th in line, with about 10 more behind her. I think most, if not all, were served a pre-order.
I've officially pre-ordered:
One (1) Nintendo Wii
One (1) Classic Controller
One (1) Wii Remote
One (1) Nunchuck Attachment
One (1) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Can I really keep this thing in the box until December 25th?
rob @ Oct 13th 2006 4:40PM
I've got to say after reading all the comments so far...I guess I don't quite completely get being so excited, jittery, anxious, etc. Maybe it was because I was running on like 2 hours of sleep this morning but I really saw it as much more of a chore than anything, kind of a "I guess if I really want to make sure, I had better crawl out of bed and get this."
The most overpowering thing for me is frustration that all this work for a slip of paper, and wait another month+ for the actual doodad that we all really pretty much became very familiar with (or as much as you can without actually playing one (unless you're one of the lucky ones who have)) months ago.
But oh well, now the final looking-forward-to begins, I suppose.
Jesse @ Oct 18th 2006 8:56PM
I live in Tallahassee, Fl and the two stores in one of our malls had 12 and 15 (respectfully) and I was last in line. I wasn't able to get one here. But someone in the line said that there was a place west of Tallahasse that had them, so I got online and looked east. Sure enough I found one an hour away and was able to pre-order. I was sad to find out a friend of mine was not able to get one though. He was one person away to ordering one.
Adrock @ Oct 13th 2006 4:55PM
According to the receipt above, you got duped into pre-ordering fake money (Wii Points Card)! Did you think that Nintendo would run out of fake money? or that you wouldn't be able to purchase it online through the Wii interface?
More than likly, you met your demise at the hands of a crafty EB cashier who lives his life by the ABCs (Always Be Closing).
jdb @ Oct 13th 2006 5:00PM
>I've got to say after reading all the comments so far...I guess I >don't quite completely get being so excited, jittery, anxious, etc. >Maybe it was because I was running on like 2 hours of sleep this >morning but I really saw it as much more of a chore than anything, >kind of a "I guess if I really want to make sure, I had better crawl >out of bed and get this."
To me, it was fun because it wasn't my typical, average day.
Instead of hanging around at home until 9 or 10 and then heading to lab to do my PhD research, I was up early and hanging outside a game store with 30 other people who were just as excited about the Wii as I was. Talking to others about what games they're planning to reserve, passing time by arguing what the "top 5 games of all time" are, etc is something that I don't really do on a typical day. Console preorder and launch lines are always a awesome bonding experience.
It's like when you go out to eat just to do something. The food isn't particularly great, you could have probably cooked something out home in the same amount of time, but you do it for the experience. Except in this case, it's an experience you only get to enjoy every 4-5 years; and even then, only if you're excited enough about a new console.
Bryan @ Oct 13th 2006 5:07PM
A friend and I went to our local EB to preorder our Wiis shortly after 8AM, we wound up #17 and #18 in line (out of 32). Most, but not all of the preorder tickets were given out by the time the store opened, and they let people in 5 at a time starting 9:50 AM.
We were talking about the preorder with a few people around us, and the two guys directly in front of us told us they were buying for nothing else but Ebay. "So you're reserving a Wii?" "Yeah, but I don't really play games. I'm just trying to make some money on Ebay." We started talking to another lady next to us, who was ordering one for her son, about the features of the system, from the Wii-mote to the multiplayer. The two guys listened in, and by the time they got inside the store to order theirs, they told us, "it sounds so good I may just end up keeping it."
Another Ebay ripoff (hopefully) averted!

For the spoiler though, I did get my pre-order after 3 stores; but there was a good amount of drama and a car chase involved.

I hate the whole pre-ordering deal, it numbs down the whole experience and excitement of getting a new console. I like camping out the day before launch at a Wal-Mart, target, best buy, whatever that doesn't have preorders. See the hundreds of people there, everyone talking, waves coming and going to hunt down a store with a shorter line. Plus the way I see it is those 24 hour stores are always the way to go. Don't have to hassle with pre-orders and you get your console 9 hours before everyone else. Ah, I'll be the first in line at my favorite Wal-Mart come November 18th.
I feel sorry for those of you who preordered, I get my game on the second it turns from the 18th to the 19th.

I have to say, it was actually a really pleasant experience this morning - everyone was suprisingly calm except for mall security, who ordered us into that foodcourt to sit...which was great, it gave us a chance to sit down and play MarioKart..

Preordered at a standalone gamestop here that was across the divided local highway from a mall with another gamestop. had 7 (after gamestop employee reserves) consoles for the general public, whereas the gamestop across the street had 35 (before gamestop employee reserves). I arrived at 530 with no one else arriving until 730. Then the other 6 came within about an hour. Store worker came and told us he only had 7 consoles and we turned away a couple people advising them to go to the mall to try to get in line there.
Pre-ordered/Paid in full:
1 - Wii
2 - Classic Controllers
3 - Wii Remotes
3 - Nunchucks
I pre-ordered at FYE a while ago, but was not assured a console on launch date from them. So now i have one console pre-ordered and one paid in full for launch.

I attempted to get my mom there early enough (the only peeson I can think of), but she got there at 9:45 (aka, no chance). I'll be one of those camping out at Best Buy on Launch day... Hopefully, not many people decide to go to that Best Buy on the 19th...

I lazily expected there to not be too much of a crowd (whoops) So I arrived at the mall at 10:15, walk into the Babbages and wait, after about 5 mintues I found out they had a crowd before and gave out their last alotted system at 9:30 (damn!) so on my way out of the mall, depressed with my own stupidity, I drop into the EB games in the mall (yeah, we have both, odd I know) I stand in line behind a guy who I find out is reserving Wii games and stuff (oh, a glimmer of hope?) another guy comes in behind me in line and asks if they're still taking pre orders for the Wii, they say they have one left, look at me and ask if thats what I'm here for (oh sweet baby jesus!) I respond with "Yes!" and I proceed to order my Wii, Zelda, and an extra controller and nunchuck.
The EB games guy was also nice enough to tell me that the Wiimote will not be $40, he was looking at the screen and said, "wow, the controller is only $22? I thought it was more" I'm pretty sure he wasn't confusing it with the nunchuck since I asked him "the controller is $22?" and he responded "yeah, and you have to put $10 down so its really cheap when you buy it."
