LoZ controls get updated and Shiggy talks GC titles updated for Wii
Some have said that using the Wiimote as if it were a sword, swinging it around to perform actions in-game, will undoubtedly cause us all to collapse from exhaustion. Some have noted that no actual force is required when using the Wiimote as if it were a sword or in any other kind of fashion, causing the previous point to be irrelevant. Well, now the argument may heat up yet again as Shigeru Miyamoto recently confirmed with Nintendo Dream magazine that the previous controls established for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are no more. Instead of using the B button to cause Link to slash, as the E3 build demonstrated, now players will need to physically swing the Wiimote around should they wish Link to vanquish his foes. Only thing is, the combat in previous Legend of Zelda titles has been intense, causing some to wonder if this new change is for the best.
Also, now that the B button has been freed up, it will now be used when Link is utilizing the bow. Upon aiming at a target, hitting the B button will let loose the arrow from the bow. Miyamoto also tested out using the d-pad for aiming duties, but decided to scrap that idea.
In the same article, Miyamoto stated that given the hardware set of the Wii, it would be easy to update GameCube titles to allow full use of the Wii's control scheme. Of course, we have to assume that if this were even going to happen it would only be restricted to first-party titles from Nintendo. Miyamoto said:
"We'll be upgrading the development tools, but GameCube code can be used for the most part as is. In that sense, I believe that it would be good to remake GameCube games for Wii, and that some titles would become better with the change to the Wii remote controller."
So, you can have one GameCube game updated with the Wii control scheme: what would the game be and how would the Wiimote be used?

Wave Race: Bob the controller in all directions to simulate the way a Jet Ski is steered in real life. My, that was easy.
Seems like the ultimate way to rekindle the Wave Race franchise...it's never been a proven, super-popular game, but a solid one that has a dedicated fanbase, so why invest in yet another Wave Race title production when you can just reclaim profits on the already-established game from '01? Cheap, but smart.
Hame @ Aug 21st 2006 2:11PM
Shigsy, how could you say that? Surely the last thing we want is more remakes?!?!
Am I the only one who's deeply saddened and worried by this comment?
raymond @ Aug 21st 2006 2:20PM
they should have an option in LoZ if you want the control scheme like it was before or the updated version.
friedgreenmushrooms @ Aug 21st 2006 2:38PM
Mmmmm...I like my Windwaker with the Wii-mote. Yummy.
El Hajjish @ Aug 21st 2006 2:39PM
Hame, I'm not worried about that comment. He said later in the article that these games would be at a reduced price. Now, if they were trying to pass these off as new games at full price, then I would be worried.
As for a Cube-to-Wii port? Pikmin. I'd love to play Pikmin using the remote as a pointer so I can more easily select one ore groups of pikmin. You could also use the remote to aim.
metayoshi @ Aug 21st 2006 2:42PM
Yes! I'll be one of the few happy with this change as I was one of the few hoping to use the Wiimote as Link's sword when Twilight Princess was rumored to be playable with the Wiimote. I don't care what anyone says about this control scheme as long as it works. If my arms get tired, then hey, they get tired... save, quit, relax. On a side note, I play tennis, so swinging my arm for hours won't be enough to tire me.
jeff @ Aug 21st 2006 2:56PM
i beleive a perfect game to update, not graphic wise, is mk:dd. it has online support but not the type that the wii iss going to use.
mykie @ Aug 21st 2006 3:00PM
The only thing I want them to do is go back and update older SNES and NES games to not include the flicker and slowdown!
Hunting_Phoenix @ Aug 21st 2006 3:33PM
Hmm...Link is left handed. Will this affect the gameplay or control?
I am something of a strange case, I am left handed when it comes to any precise movements, writing, eating, painting, etc. Gross movements I do right handed--throwing a ball, chopping wood, etc. This is probably due to me breaking my right collerbone twice when I was very young. I also use a mouse, play games, and have the ability to write using my right hand.
I'm probably going to re-learn to play games left handed on the wii. Since generally my left hand is more precise than my right, I expect to use the wii-mote in the left hand, and the nunchuck in the right. I'm slightly concerned that games like MP3:Corruption, and now LoZ:TP won't be playable easily by left handed people.
I guess I'll probably learn both ways to play. It'll probably be unavoidable for us, the overlooked minority.
Tush @ Aug 21st 2006 4:08PM
I need me some RE4 Wii! That would rock a lot of faces.
Joe @ Aug 21st 2006 4:14PM
Eh, I'm not too happy about remaking Gamecube games when they can make new ones, I'll happily pay $50 for Pikmin 3 instead of paying $20 for a game I already own with a different control scheme. Other things to consider is if Z-targeting will be possible with the Wii. I dont want to carefully aim the bow in the heat of battle, if the Wii version does have Z-targeting then I'll get it. Can someone fill me in on this?
uchiha5 @ Aug 21st 2006 4:15PM
Hunting_Phoenix, Im pretty sure Miyamoto is left handed and he has no problem with the controls so you don't have much to worry about.
vidGuy @ Aug 21st 2006 4:29PM
Joe, rest easy my man. The Wii version has lock-on targeting with a button on the nunchuk, heck it probably IS the Z button.

"You get to try out your sword on a scarecrow (lock on with a shoulder button on the nunchuck, then hit the B button underneath the pointer to strike)"
Hame @ Aug 21st 2006 4:40PM
You're right El Hajjish, but I'm still not convinced that this is a good idea and I feel let down.
I thought the Wii was ALL about 'innovation' and 'new games', not shoving out old games with tacked-on features.
Surely this gives out the wrong message completely, to gamers who will think they're being fobbed off and developers who may now think "why bother making new games when we can just re-release our old ones?"
We don't want the Wii to be: "That console that's just full of old remakes."
We want Pikmin 3, not Pikmin WITH NEW WII FEATURES!!!
We want Luigi's Mansion 2, not Luigi's Mansion WITH NEW WII FEATURES!!!
We want...........(you get the idea).....
Hopefully they will be at a very reduced price and be in different packaging (like the NES Classics range) so people aren't being conned into thinking that they're new games.
Joe @ Aug 21st 2006 5:21PM
I agree with you Hame and that's kind of what I'm saying. I don't want to play "Wii-makes" and have new control schemes and updates for old games. That's exactly what happened to Resident Evil. They kept remaking it until it's last iteration on the DS, with a "unique" and "new" control scheme. Heeeey, that sounds familiar, remaking and old game with a new control scheme, thing is Resident Evil DS isn't exactly selling out...
Ryan Pax @ Aug 21st 2006 6:33PM
I'll second #9 'Tush' for RE4 for Wii. They have to do it, the way the game controls useing the Wii-mote to aim your gun, it's a perfect fit. In fact I bet the 'pulled' RE-for-Wii scoop the the UK nintendo mag had to back off of was a RE4 remake. It's the best game of the current gen and the new controls would be so awesome. If that isn't allready the plan then someone should start a petition to get them to do it.
A week ago i would have also begged for a Wii version of FFVII Dirge of Ciberus, it has the same 'in screen' aiming, but it's gotten bad reviews so, I wouldn't miss it.
I know this isn't a gamecube game but with all the Square-Enix love nintendo's getting latley i'd love to see
Final Fantasy XII on the Wii.

I don't think there's any concern of them trying to pass these revamped games off at regular price. For one thing, they would have very little production cost, as most of the game will have already been made. And I'm not sure how I feel about the Wii controls for TP yet. That said, I'm still going to buy the Wii version XD
Bighouse @ Aug 21st 2006 9:23PM
Hame:
"We want Luigi's Mansion 2..."
Ha. Speak for yourself, buddy.
himwhoknows @ Aug 21st 2006 9:28PM
in terms of WAVING AROUND i think people are GETTING CARRIED AWAY you simply wave at the wrist and supple movments in ur hand u dont have to dance round your living room to play ALLTHO THAT IS ALLSO POSABLE
Hame @ Aug 21st 2006 10:10PM
LOL. Sorry,
Some of us want Luigi's Mansion 2
(damn mansion-bashers....) :-)
Anonymousaurus @ Aug 22nd 2006 2:28AM
-Killer 7 would be badass if it was updated with Wii motion sensing.
-someone out there has got to agree with me.
Duscrom @ Aug 22nd 2006 2:51AM
Ahh, yes, the Wii is about all new experinces.. not repeats of the same old games..... Uh.... so this story dosen't exsist.
ajprice @ Aug 22nd 2006 7:50AM
Well I don't have a Gamecube and haven't owned any non portable Nintendo before, so if they can sell cheap Gamecube games that use the Wiimote, thats all good for me, just gives a wider choice of games to play wiimote stylie!!
bryan @ Aug 22nd 2006 9:01AM
The gamecube games that people would want ported, are all under $20 now anyway. (Metroid Prime 1&2, Zelda WW, Pikmin, RE4) I hope they just allow you to purchase a microtransaction for modified controls (as one brilliant Joystiq reader pointed out). I would be reluctant to pay $30 for a game I have already purchased, and beat, but I would gladly pay less than $10 for added features in my existing library. This all relies on how much external storage nintendo allows. If I can purchase a 3rd party hard drive and hook it up USB, I will. If they try and pull an XB360 propratery hard drive, i will be very disapointed.
Draracle @ Aug 22nd 2006 12:01PM
Sweet. I am really hoping for a wiimote sword and nunchuck shield. Then I will truely have a hack'n'slash game.
