Just how many flaps does this thing have?
This is getting ridiculous. Just when we thought the mystery was solved and the conspiracy theorists were silenced, someone has to go and find another mystery flap on the Wii. What is it this time? A holographic laser cannon? An automagical DVD dongle? A nickel and dime slot for Virtual Console purchases? A scrumptious pancake maker? A completely fake photochopping attempt?We'll leave you free to speculate about its true, potentially evil purpose while we get back to eagerly pining for the flappin' games.

Hm. Not to squelch rampant speculation, but... is that actually a flap? It's completely invisible in the regular-sized image and looks rather different in the "close-up".
Not trying to ruin anyone's fun, but (a) that's a really weird place for a flap, and (b) that's a really weird place for a flap. It wouldn't even be accessible in the stand. I am withholding excitement.

That actually looks more like an SD Slot with a retractable hatch; something where you'd slip in the SD card like you would in a camera or something. It still seems somewaht strange that they would have such a big flap on the front just for an SD slot.

I had a crazy idea. How about if they put in a DS slot? You could use the wiimote in place of the stylus. Just a thought.

It's probably the DVD dongle slot. Nothing more, nothing less.
It would probably work like the GBA cover slot on the DS lite. DVD dongle goes in once, and you never have to see it again.

you CAN see the slot in the large image. It's hard to see, but it's there.

Since the SNES (I think), Nintendo's systems always have slots for possible attachments and peripherals that may or may not be used at some point in the system's lifespan. They were rarely put to use until the 'Cube, where there were a few that were used for the modems and the Gameboy Player. That's probably all this is, though I agree it might be used for the DVD player attachment in the future.

i think that flap is to lock it into the base since the councle looks like it is outside the little rectangle base thing

Just to give everyone an idea, I'd estimate the slot to be around 5 cm wide based on the GC disc's size, by 5 cm deep (slightly larger than 3 stacked DVD cases), by a few millimeters tall.
I'd say DVD dongle, as that'll be a one-time insert that you won't have to mess around with again.

hmmmmm might sound crazy, but could it be a slot for REPLACING THE BACKUP BATTERY???? you know the sort.... the flat ones that go in watches / calculators / the Dreamcast... also found in many SNES cartridges, instant lost save when it goes flat...

Wii doesn't need a backup battery for that as it uses flash memory for game saves and downloads. As we know, flash is a non-volatile memory that doesn't need electricity to keep what's stored in it.
It could be a flap for a realtime clock battery tho, but that's not certain either. Gamecube had a battery-backed realtime clock too, and that battery isn't accessible from the outside. It's usually not neccessary to change these batteries, my original NES Zelda cart's battery still works for example, the Wii is likely to become obsolete and fail mechanically or electronically before the battery does. Still, it's a possibility...
It isn't going to be a SD cardslot or such tho, because it would become obstructed when the console sits vertically in its stand. That'd be stupid design of Nintendo, and say what you will of them, they usually don't design stupidly. :)
