Slight alterations to the Wii controller
Somewhere in the land of Spain, Nintendo held one hell of an event without anyone else on the planet seeming to notice. RevoGamers.net were some of the lucky ones invited, and managed to chronicle the event with pictures and a short video. As we can see in the picture to the right, the Wiimote has once again gone through some minor design alterations. First, the + and - buttons have returned to their original "return arrow" and pause versions, as seen in hardware shots prior to E3 2006. The Wii logo on the bottom of the remote has disappeared, for reasons unknown. Finally, however, is the attachment of a wrist-strap for the remote, which is a wonderful idea considering the motions required in games like Wii tennis and the, ah...expensive TV sets around the room. With any luck, a similar strap will come bundled with the system and remote.
But that's not all. There are pictures of the back of the Wiimote without batteries, some sleek sensor bar close-ups, and a bitchin' wall mural for Wii Sports. The event seems very classy and much more relaxed than E3.
Wii. Jugar para Creer.

I'd don't know what to make of this. If it's true - it doesn't help that I can't read the page :) - Nintendo just took a huge step BACKWARD, in my opinion. It's the A button's lack of gloss and shiny that throws me off... but maybe that's just the difference between real life photography and those PR pics.
And removing Wii from the bottom of the remote makes it too plain down there.

Actually, the strap was present on E3 wiimotes. Seen plenty of E3 gameplay videos to know that.
Probot @ Jun 28th 2006 7:00PM
Heh, those pictures of dozens of people playing the Wii in a practically empty room makes me feel sorry for everyone that waited 4 hours in line at E3.
As for the changes, Nintendo has said they're still deciding which buttons to use, so it'll probably change again before it's released.
Fok @ Jun 28th 2006 8:25PM
Is that comparison of the pen and the sensor bar, ACTUAL SIZE?!
If so, wow, just wow Nintendo.
matt @ Jun 28th 2006 8:45PM
you'll notice that the display remotes (with the shells and whatnot) still had the Wii on the bottom... these were probably pre-e3 units that have been used in internal demos and whatnot... that's my guess.
Franky Digital @ Jun 28th 2006 10:30PM
Seeing as how these are all just demo units for the purposes of the conferences, and they were being used by tons of people, I'm sure the version he had was just the demo version remote, intended to be used and then disposed of.

The wrist strap was on the E3 units, and the playable controllers at E3 had the back and pause symbols. The only thing different from the E3 version is that the "Wii" branding is gone. I know, I went to E3 and played the thing.

Worst. Translation. Ever.
"OMG! The consoles of the positions did not have trumpets it connected!!"
Let's translate it to English next time. :D

the strap looks alot like the strap on the original DS. i'll probably just use the DS strap on the pointer. I hope the rumor of the pointer having your user information rings true, so i can bring my wii pointer with me everywhere.
nintendoidloyd @ Jun 29th 2006 8:41AM
if they have removed the logo could it mean that even nintendo dont like the name
travis @ Jun 29th 2006 9:39AM
you know there was some rumor a while back that nintendo may change the name of this thing again...Im wondering if this is why the 'Wii' branding has been removed...
nintendoidloyd @ Jun 29th 2006 10:19AM
as much as id love them to they aint going to change the name. dam why did i even mention it . sometimes it hurts
Tush @ Jun 29th 2006 10:56AM
Dude, there were girls there??? No way!
Tush @ Jun 29th 2006 11:00AM
Sorry to double post, but I think it's great how Nintendo is releasing Wii Sports as such a simple and fun game. even with it's "low-end" graphics, it still looks pretty slick. It really symbolizes the system as a whole.
Nathan @ Jun 29th 2006 12:31PM
Lots of widescreen stuff. I don't care if it's not hi-def, but PLEASE let most games be 16x9. No Black Bars!
Dan @ Jun 29th 2006 12:59PM
I think this is the picture they took off:

That is a pretty cool sensor bar, by the way.
Joe Sap @ Jun 29th 2006 1:15PM
i took a closer look at the picture of the backside of the wii (tee-hee). There is a lable above the orannge port that says sensor bar. and so the mystery of the strange port from back when the book of wii pictures cam out, ends
sergio @ Jun 29th 2006 2:33PM
Actually the site tells that they used pre E3 units and the final versions are the ones in display with the Wii logo.
gavucha @ Jun 29th 2006 4:38PM
it was in madrid, hotel puerta de america not somewhere in the land in spain

I've noticed the bottom 2 buttons are continuously changing. In these pictures they are 1-2 buttons in others they are a-b, and others they are x-y. This just goes to show how much the controller and the system could change by launch date.
fraxyl @ Jun 30th 2006 11:43PM
The A button is still glossy, it's not shining because of the lack of light on it.
If consider a buttons lack of glossiness and shine to be a step backwards, you have serious issues. It wouldn't be the end of the world.
The DS buttons aren't shiny and glossy and they're fine. They're even better than I thought because the lables are actually inlaid plastic, whereas when I first looked at it, I thought they were just painted on.
If the buttons are like those, I'll be cheering.

"Heh, those pictures of dozens of people playing the Wii in a practically empty room makes me feel sorry for everyone that waited 4 hours in line at E3."
It was 6 hours in line actually.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice at the beginning of that video a glimpse of what looks like an updated version of the skeet shooting game that's part of Duck Hunt?? It even has the classic status bars at the bottom of the screen! Wonder if this would be part of WiiSports?
Man, I would love to play an updated version of Duck Hunt on the Wii!
