View Opera Browser box art through a web browser
These web browser things are fantastic innovations. We fully understand why Nintendo would want to have one on their DS. They no doubt envisioned situations such as these, where you could use the newfangled technology to actually look at images online, images depicting anything from adorable kittens to Japanese box art. The guys at Game Watch were quick to take advantage and have "uploaded" the two versions (one for each DS model) of the Opera Browser packaging. We know. Being at the helm of cutting-edge technology can be quite frightening.Larger images "after the break". Whatever that means.

Why two versions? Whats the difference between the lite and fat (i refuse to call it the phat).
Pieps86 @ Jun 22nd 2006 8:53PM
Different versions probably for the included GBA slot memory pak, the Lite pak is probably small so it won't stick out.
Crazylink @ Jun 22nd 2006 10:04PM
Two versions? That sucks. I don't have a Lite yet but I plan on getting one latter this year. In the meantime I'll want to use my phat so I'll have to buy two versions. v_v
Rich @ Jun 22nd 2006 10:26PM
You probably don't have to buy both versions as long as you don't care that the GBA memory pak sticks out the bottom.
ramuji @ Jun 22nd 2006 10:52PM
"You probably don't have to buy both versions as long as you don't care that the GBA memory pak sticks out the bottom."
This appears to be true. In the images above, the bottom line on the package for the DS says: "Usable with the Nintendo DS Lite; however, the cartridge will stick out about 1cm."
The bottom line on the package for the DS Lite says: "Compatible with the Nintendo DS Lite only. Cannot be used with the Nintendo DS."
FYI

Can anyone find where it says Opera on there?
Neko Tsukimi @ Jun 22nd 2006 11:43PM
That brought tears to my eyes... So... beautiful... I'm imagining the future...
But, yes~ Go Opera for recognizing the need for 2 versions :D
idioteraser @ Jun 23rd 2006 12:06AM
Well obviously the lite version can only be used for the lite. It wouldn't connect to the pins in the phat version.
Conn @ Jun 23rd 2006 12:28AM
This damn well better be cheap.
Cyryl @ Jun 23rd 2006 3:53AM
What you people do not seem to take into account is the possibility of different hardware. Or perhaps they both use the same hardware but different revisions of the same hardware. (In the tech world this would effectively be considered DIFFERENT hardware.) Or perhaps different firmwares FOR the hardware.
For example... (Just for the sake of argument... A scenario.)
Perhaps the wireless network hardware is using newer firmware.
Note that this would be consistent with the fact that you can use the DS browser software in the DS Lite. The newer firmware in the DS Lite would most likely support all functions of the older firmware revision. That would also mean that the newer software functions of the firmware in the DS Lite version would not work on the older DS's hardware.
Remember though... That was simply an example of a possible scenario. See my point, though?

I did actually check it out where it was on display at E3. It's dog slow. I doubt I'll be picking it up for myself.
.ed @ Jun 23rd 2006 8:55AM
Jef,
It is not dog slow, its actually very very fast.
and where at E3 did you play it... i was there and saw nothing.
if you don,t believe me, my blog has visual proof i have had my hands on it this week at the opera 9 launch even tin seattle.

As for price, knowing that Opera is free, chances are we're going to see a $15-$20 from Nintendo/Opera together. Seeing that this is pretty innovative (the whole idea of a slot loading web browser) I'm sure Opera may want a small cut.
Then again, I'm just some guy...
Kaizoku Risu @ Jun 23rd 2006 10:23AM
Unfortunately though, the browser is pretty limited.
"The browser does not reproduce Flash, PDF, animations or sound content."
That really rules out a majority of the things most people use the internet for. I guess you can still read email, articles, webcomics, etc...

Wow, if that's what the majority of web users are doing, I feel sorry for the future of the internet. I guess that explains why there's no longer information on the internet. Just ads and pr0n.
Crazylink @ Jun 23rd 2006 1:08PM
No flash? Are you serious?
gil @ Jun 23rd 2006 1:08PM
that makes no sense.. there should be NO reason for two cartridges. that would mean you can not use Tetris DS, New SMB, or ANY GAME PRIOR TO THIS MONTH with the Lite, unless they releases a seperate version. AND that is a crock.
i call bs.
naib @ Jun 23rd 2006 1:13PM
"The browser does not reproduce Flash, PDF, animations or sound content."
That's the stuff i have blocked in Firefox anyway. Good riddance! Now if only Opera supported Greasemonkey...
@Neko
Smutt surfing is still doable. We'll just have to settle for pics. =)
tachase @ Jun 23rd 2006 1:32PM
Looks like "gil" has a little trouble reading and understanding.
gil @ Jun 23rd 2006 1:42PM
I just don't see the need to make two seperate versions. One cm is not cause for a new cartridge.
Bobadillo @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:12PM
Gil you're a moron. Read the frickin article
For those who want a flush fittnig cartridge its there, for Phat owners, they can buy the full size. It's simple so eat my shorts.
Chuck @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:30PM
I didn't notice anything about this...will Opera on the DS allow you to rotate the screen and hold it in "book mode" so you can browse more easily and have the landscape effect?
Bob799 @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:33PM
I was thinking they would have 2 versions.
The ZeroCorpse @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:37PM
I'm glad they made two versions. I don't want the damn cartridge sticking out while I have it in my pocket. This way, I can keep the browser in all the time, instead of the "blank" cover.
I think the whiners here are the ones who have the phat.
gil @ Jun 23rd 2006 3:10PM
You are correct Bobadillo. I am a moron. It's settled.
...Jan... Medi @ Jun 23rd 2006 3:55PM
So, no Flash, Sound, PDF, or Animations? Animations like .gif? Or just Flash animations?
Eh, I'd still buy it. I don't see myself reading a giant PDF document on the DS. Without FLASH, there's no real reason for sound. Unless it's a music website...
Guess it'll just be the basics for me. Google, Wikipedia, and websites that don't have animations.
But what about cookies, movies, or Java?
Mike Ishi @ Jun 23rd 2006 5:10PM
#24: Java? Well, if it doesn't support Flash, PDF or animations, I doubt it would support Java. Do you mean to say Javascript? They are completely different. :)
It will most definitely support cookies. Movies? Movies would probably be what they were talking about when they said "animations."
:)
Anticrawl @ Jun 23rd 2006 5:50PM
Are we sure these are real? Where the hell is the huge O for Opera on it? Nintendo musta compensated Opera quite nicely to keep the O off the front cover and top filling.

Keon @ Jun 24th 2006 9:56AM
Anyways, when's DSpeak & video comin out?
Keon @ Jun 24th 2006 10:00AM
Wait...Shouldn't opera b able 2 download FLASH and all that other stuff?
