Kojima loves analogies
The latest issue of Official Playstation Monthly featured a short interview with Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. After comparing the three next-gen systems to food in a rather famous quote a year ago, Hideo now has a new view on the subject."Now, the PlayStation 3 is like a movie theater for people who want to see this movie on the big screen with THX and 5.1 audio, even if they have to pay a high price. The Xbox 360 is DVD. Basically, you don't know what movie you want to see, so you go to the store and see if you can pick up a good one. The Wii is like a TV for when you're home and you don't know what you want to watch but you [want to] have that variety."
Yeahhhhh. Not really sure what that means, but Hideo has shown some major love for the Wii in the past, so it must be good. Anyone have some of their own interesting analogies they'd like to share?

Sounds to me like he means the Wii will have the biggest variety of games... which is almost always a good thing, isn't it now?
Trauts @ Jun 16th 2006 4:48PM
You're inviting analogies for the Wii?
Well...
"Wii gives you the freedom to go Wii wherever you want."
"XBox360 let's you play with a large box."
"PlayStation3 is an overpriced brick, which might be good for bludgeoning, but not for anything legal."
derfreddy @ Jun 16th 2006 4:56PM
yeah i learned a new voc!
ps3 = percussion (more possibilities than u need)
360 = drums (sounds good.. in the background)
wii = airguitar (most fun.. and everyone can play it)
JacKal @ Jun 16th 2006 5:08PM
@derfreddy
I like those analogies
courtney @ Jun 16th 2006 5:23PM
Well if the Wii is like TV then that should be the best right. On TV you can get shows and movies and get it in High Def. with 5.1 surround.
SuicideNinja @ Jun 16th 2006 6:17PM
Can the PS3 be that ugly triple-deck aluminum spoiler you put on your car because you think it makes you faster?
I'd say the 360 is more like going to the mall to be social.
I'll go with Kojima's analogy on the Wii.
Tom @ Jun 16th 2006 6:18PM
Game consoles are like Stephen King novels....
PS3 is like The Stand. Large with several components integrated into one package.
Xbox360 is like Pet Cemetary. A Mainstream, tried-and-true formula currently resurrecting past incarations.
Wii is The Dark Tower Series. Totally Epic! I just wanna use the Wiimote to shoot baddies Gunslinger Style!
Ben Serwa @ Jun 16th 2006 6:29PM
I don't like that Hideo just compares the graphics potentials of the consoles without taking into account Wii's controller. If the PS3 is like going to the theatre and the X-Box 360 is like having a DVD setup in your home, than the Wii is like... well, like playing a video game instead of watching a movie.
Vince @ Jun 16th 2006 6:34PM
He's saying the PS3 is the main event and the Wii is the clown that warms up the crowd, the staple act.
The clown appeals to everyone.
Take that how you want.
Darrel @ Jun 16th 2006 9:13PM
Kojima loves his analogies doesn't he?
Las time he used FOOD.
PS3 being like the most expensive meal in the most posh restaurant
Xbox 360 like eating in a very nice affordable restaurant.
Wii is like eating a delicious home cooked meal./ or home made cookies grandma makes (no makes it better than she does ;) )
Pikachelsea @ Jun 16th 2006 9:13PM
Worst. Analogy. EVER.
"If the PS3 is like going to the theatre and the X-Box 360 is like having a DVD setup in your home, than the Wii is like... well, like playing a video game instead of watching a movie."
lol, nice. Much better :)
wii the people @ Jun 16th 2006 11:05PM
The PS3 is like a brutal raping.
The XBOX 360 is akin to statutory rape.
The Wii is comparable to good old fashioned woman on woman on man consensual sex.
ngSliver @ Jun 16th 2006 11:36PM
^^ ROFL
nice one "Wii for the people"
Leon @ Jun 17th 2006 12:21AM
Humm, Wonder if the Ps3 folks and Msoft talked to him about downing the wii. seems to me he is saying the wii is a basic system while the other to are high end models.
I think the wii has the best potential. its like the ford focus basic but works for everyone the Xbox is like a suv nice but still has some problems like the suv does eatting gas and the Ps3 is like the ferrai or Lotus athe high price care that sounds great but price to high for anyone but the big money folks.
boots @ Jun 17th 2006 1:11AM
Xbox 360 is, like someone said above, the tried and proven formula, or in other words, the same old crap with marginally better graphics.
PS3 is the best in technology of entertainment you've ever gotten.
Wii is the best in gameplay you'll ever get.
Anyone that disagrees is mentally disabled.
Jedediah Johnson @ Jun 17th 2006 1:56AM
I know this is the WiiFanboy site and all but tell me again..how do we know the Wii will have the best gameplay? I mean, we know it'll offer new methods of playing games but that doesn't really say anything about having the best gameplay experiences. Thats totally up to how good the Wii controller is and how good the developers are. For all we realistically know, the Wii could have a life as lacking as the Cube or the N64.
OyoyoY123 @ Jun 17th 2006 2:49AM
and u know what they say:~ TVs make ya stupid
BPMΩ @ Jun 17th 2006 4:27AM
How do we know Wii will be great? Developers are flocking to it like crazy, saying how awesome it is.
We've got people like Tecmo and SNK Playmore who ignored Nintendo the last two (console) generations, and here they are supoorting Wii! With launch titles, no less (Tecmo with PangYa, and SNK with Metal Slug Anthology)!
Then we have other people like AGFRAGS and NIBRIS making games on Wii, and not PS3 or 360 (AGFRAGS with the Bob Ross title, and NIBRIS with several titles).
Big guys like EA, SEGA, Ubisoft, and Activision are also showing their fare share of support.
EA is already working on a Wii-specific version of Madden (that doesn't use a standard controller; granted it's Madden, but still nice to see they're supporting it like this).
SEGA has the Wii-exclusive Sonic Wildfire and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz.
Ubisoft has Red Steel as an exclusive, and a Wii-specific version of Rayman Raving Rabbids as well.
Activision has made the new Tony Hawk game, Downhill Jam, Wii- and DS-exclusive. Though it seems a bit watered down compared to the rest of the Tony Hawk games (from what I hear, anyways), so we'll see if they bring a standard game to Wii later on as well...
Heck, Nintendo is even creating new IP for Wii, such as Project H.A.M.M.E.R.
I think with this kind of developer support (new and old, big and small), it's hard to believe that Wii will fail.
And I'm sure there'll be many people who'll get Wii JUST for Virtual Console. :P
As for the TV analogy... um... the controller looks like a TV remote! Yeah!
Janet @ Jun 17th 2006 6:37AM
Gamecube and N64 were lacking? Even if you don't support Nintendo, you have to admit the quality games released on those systems. They were also following the SNES, quality since unmatched. And the best thing SNK Playmore can do for the Wii is continue to release "Anthologies" with Wi-Fi capabilities. Playmore-made titles are absolute shit.
Leon @ Jun 17th 2006 8:28AM
Heck, I would think the controller makes the wii amore interesting system because you will almost be in the game not just playing. that to me is what will set the wii apart from the others is your not controlling the character with a
standard controller but your actually being that character in the game at times. you will be the qb and kicker more in madden than just pushing buttons and a stick.
If the minds of gamemaking can try and get the wii control figure out strong i get the feeling the wii will last like the ps2 has in terms of usage time.
John @ Jun 17th 2006 12:06PM
I think he's saying that most people go to the Movie theater once in a while because of the higher price so they can watch big-screen movies. (PS3)
Others watch DVDs more regularly than them going to the theater as it's cheaper and there are more options. (360)
Lastly, when you don't want to watch a movie or don't know what movie to watch, you can turn on the TV and see whats showing. I think it's important to note that he likely means that the TV is watched more often by more people than the other 2 and that it is very inexpensive comparitivly. (If you dont count cable costs :P)
Chris @ Jun 18th 2006 1:51PM
I wonder if he may be discussing the time commitment needed for each of the 3 consoles. Something like the PS3 is always an event, not something you can pick up and play because a movie at a theater waits for no man. The 360 is a little more flexible because you have the ability to pick it up and put it down a little easier, as in you can pause a DVD, but most people will still watch it to completion. Finally the Wii is very easy to pick up and play, and requires no overhead time investment (going to the theater, picking up a DVD) so you can turn it on a and play a few rounds whenever you want, without feeling like you have to commit a large chuck of time to it. You can see the same effect on the PC, where you have high quality games that require 40+ hours to complete and aren't the kind of thing you would start playing when you have to leave in 10 mins, but then you have little flash games on the web that are just as fun, but you can pick them up and play for a few mins and be satisfied. Just a few thoughts...
renaldo @ Jun 18th 2006 8:50PM
The PS3 is like two ply toilet paper that moisturizes the ass crack and soothes you.
The 360 has all sorts of decorations and characters and is fun to read.
The Revolution is anything you use to wipe other than toilet paper. Like a fine leaf or a golfing magazine.
Pit @ Jun 19th 2006 4:16AM
Wow. That was kinda weird. He kinda compared those games to movies and such? What do video games have to do with movies (besides electronics and TVs)? And what was the point of this article?
Baylor @ Jun 20th 2006 3:03AM
You see, Wii is like a Jello Puddin' Pop. No, actually, it's more like Kodak film. No, actually, Wii is like the New Coke. It'll be around forever, heh-heh-heh.
...Bleeding Gums Murphy?
...Anybody?
Billy_McBong @ Jul 1st 2006 8:36PM
Bleeding Gums Murphy is from the simpsons
and i like the analogies that the wii is like the TV because i watch TV all the time -accually im watching it while i type this- i will rent a DVD every once in a while, and i rarely go to the movies
KirbyMeister @ Jul 3rd 2006 10:22AM
Well I boycott movie theatres, ever since the MPAA started bitching about the 'evils of piracy' that don't exist - if pirates were a threat to any industry that industry would be dead a long time ago.
