New Super Mario Bros. only compatible with DS Lite
In a statement issued today, Nintendo
have confirmed that Mario's triumphant return to smashing bricks with his head and chasing after mushrooms in New
Super Mario Bros. is poised to help usher in the North American launch of the DS Lite, perhaps to a degree that
few gamers were expecting. New Super Mario Bros. will only be compatible with the DS Lite and will
not work with the original machine. Nintendo's name-taking, posterior-assaulting marketing guru, Reggie Fills-Aimes,
explained that players would be able to see why this decision was made."Players won't be able to see. On the original DS, I mean. The screens on the old system are simply much too dark, making the new Mushroom Kingdom almost impossible to navigate. We had always planned to make New Super Mario Bros. a premier title for the Lite and its superior screens, and what better way to make it exclusive to that system?"
This lends more weight to the earlier murmurings of a Mario DS Lite bundle hitting US shores, though Reggie was quick to point out that the recent shortages in Japan may cause the system to launch a bit later than the game itself.
"New Super Mario Bros. should be out for a little while before the DS Lite, which is a great way of starting the marketing train rolling. The actual system won't take long to catch up though--two months at most."
The Lite-only New Super Mario Bros. is currently slated for release on 21 March.
[Update: Just in case you're reading this late, this story was an evil, bogus April Fool's trick. Shame on me.]

im sure this isnt an april fools at all
Lewigi @ Apr 1st 2006 6:30AM
This is terrible. But then again, it will probably work, as i am now thinking of getting a DS lite for this game.
Btw if you look at the official site at http://mario.nintendo.com/ you will see that the game has been delayed to May 21st. But that news came out before this news, so i dont know whats going on
Richard @ Apr 1st 2006 6:31AM
Weakest April Fools ever.
Brad Root @ Apr 1st 2006 6:44AM
Man, this totally had me until I noticed it was April 1st.
Everyone knows that a move only this bone-headed could come from Microsoft or Sony, and mostly Sony at that. Not to make that as some sort of fanboy comment, but a mark of truth. Nintendo has done some really stupid things in the past (the friend code system is pretty far up on the list IMHO) but lately they've been good, so I wouldn't believe it.
Iwata @ Apr 1st 2006 6:50AM
April fool to you too
Kamran @ Apr 1st 2006 7:11AM
".... slated for release on 21 March."
Chris Mear @ Apr 1st 2006 8:22AM
You totally got me. I was all ready to come here and post a diatribe on what a stupid move this was, until I started reading the comments.
You win this time, DS Fanboy! You win this time...
phl0w @ Apr 1st 2006 8:25AM
It's maybe mankind's most detestable habit to mess with other beings' beliefs.
You do know that misquoting someone is manipulation and violates personal rights?
student @ Apr 1st 2006 8:50AM
hah, drinks all around. Despite knowing it was an april fools joke, my heart stopped and i wondered... could it POSSIBLY be true?
Nik @ Apr 1st 2006 9:38AM
hahaha, nice one guys, ur april fooling needs a little work, I mean c'mon. Theres no way they'd release a game that's only for the DS Lite BEFORE the system actually comes out, and if they did this, all the developers might start doing it.
PS: if you guys like april fools jokes, check out EGM's april issue. It actually had me, I'll admit.
Tre Parker @ Apr 1st 2006 9:40AM
This is bogus. I am not going to buy an entirely new DS just so that I can playNew Super Mario Bros. This is kind of like UMD movies on the PSP, which can only be played on the PSP, versus DVD, which is compatable on so many different media devices. I hope this game has poor sales on the exclusive DS lite version so that maybe they'll have enough sense to put it on the original DS.
tonedef @ Apr 1st 2006 10:00AM
haha! you got me. good one.
Clinton @ Apr 1st 2006 10:01AM
Take it easy there Tre, if you haven't notice this is April 1st which means APRIL FOOLS!!!
Ipsum @ Apr 1st 2006 10:04AM
How can you be poster #10 and not know that it's an April Fool's joke?
Brian @ Apr 1st 2006 10:08AM
wow, that was actually pretty weak for an April Fool's joke...I don't think even Nintendo is THAT stupid...they'd be cutting off millions upon millions of potential buyers. I didn't believe this article from the first line
Tivy @ Apr 1st 2006 10:47AM
Notice how there is no read link and therefore no source to this information. I'm saying this is definitely a joke. Why do people feel it's necessary to spread a bunch of BS. Just 'cause everyone else is doing it doesn't mean you should too. Doesn't matter though, I'm getting a Lite anyway.
RupeeClock @ Apr 1st 2006 10:53AM
Lmao, nice prank.
Not that it'd matter to me, my DS lite order is FINALLY being processed. ^_^

Ilya @ Apr 1st 2006 11:05AM
When i read it....i knew it wasn't gonna work....theres no way anyone can make a Ds lite version of a game because the DS lite has the same system as the other one...
But i did wonder at first if it was true!
B1gC72 @ Apr 1st 2006 11:38AM
bravo DS Fanboy bravo. i was seriously gettin pissed 4 a second there, until i realized "y in the hell would they put a game 2 months b4 it can b played?" wat a great move that woulda been 4 Nintendo. wow, an 2 think i almost ended up like Tre Parker in comment #11 lol.
Joe @ Apr 1st 2006 2:50PM
LOL I almost fell for this until
the last sentence....
The Lite-only New Super Mario Bros. is currently slated for release on .
skittles @ Apr 1st 2006 3:16PM
this has to be a joke. isn't it? it's april fools day. besides, how do we know that some punk with amazing photoshop skills didn't do this? if that's not a joke than f**k you nintendo
skittles @ Apr 1st 2006 3:18PM
f**k you nintendo!!!!
skittles @ Apr 1st 2006 3:25PM
"New Super Mario Bros. should be out for a little while before the DS Lite, which is a great way of starting the marketing train rolling. The actual system won't take long to catch up though--two months at most. if that's what reggie said than why would it only be compatible only for a system no one has yet. and if he did once again f#@k you nintendo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zack @ Apr 1st 2006 3:35PM
Nice April fools trick!
Nintendo is all about reaching out to gamers and non gamers alike, so they wouldn't release a most-wanted game like this for a system that no one in the U.S has and make them pay for a bundle. Had me for a second though.
skittles @ Apr 1st 2006 3:37PM
this is definetly a joke this is a joystig weblog and revolution fanboy has a bugus blog too for april fools day. one more time cause I feel like saying it f##k you nintendo.
Vincent @ Apr 1st 2006 3:40PM
I'm soo stupid...I fell for it....X_x
skittles @ Apr 1st 2006 3:41PM
all joystig sites have an april fools blog and so does revolution fanboy. it took two readings to realize it was a fake.
ElChibo @ Apr 1st 2006 3:46PM
I guarantee everyone 100% that this is an April Fools joke. The lowest brightness setting on the DSL is similar to the DS. And not being able to see the game? That makes no sense. GBA had no backor front light and you can still play every GBA game on it. This is a poorly thought joke.
aprilfool @ Apr 1st 2006 3:47PM
Ya know what would be the best April Fool's joke ever? Not posting one. Seriously, the WWW is the place for the worst April1 jokes.
troyboydesign @ Apr 1st 2006 4:02PM
Even though this is an April Fools, it did make me cancel my DS LIte order from Lik Sang. Why pay an inflated import price because Nintendo cant meet overseas demands, plus shipping when it _possibly_ could be packaged as some sort of deal for it's US release?
Jim N @ Apr 1st 2006 4:53PM
Whew! I am so glad that is a joke. With all the XBox 360 games due out in March, if I had to buy a DS Lite too my wife would probably scalp me.
B-bird @ Apr 1st 2006 5:49PM
Yo they had me for a good while. Even upon realization that it was April 1st, I was still wondering if it was true or not, the photoshoped game case looked so... "official"
Jamie @ Apr 1st 2006 6:49PM
Hehe... VERY FUNNY! Nintendo is much smarter than this, a move like this could shatter their handheld market; as everyone that owns a DS is not going to buy a Lite to play one new game. And what a pathetic excuse: "The Screens are too dark" HA! Happy April Fools, idiots...
B1gC72 @ Apr 1st 2006 7:53PM
bravo DS Fanboy bravo. i was seriously gettin pissed 4 a second there, until i realized "y in the hell would they put a game 2 months b4 it can b played?" wat a great move that woulda been 4 Nintendo. wow, an 2 think i almost ended up like Tre Parker in comment #11 lol.
Miranda @ Apr 1st 2006 8:19PM
God, I'm dumb. I totally believed this until I read the comments. Well, maybe we can consider it a measure of my cynicism about corporations, rather than of my gullibility? :-)
Pinocchio @ Apr 1st 2006 8:59PM
Possibly a better excuse would have been that the game relies on an Option Pak that is available only in the DS Lite's smaller form factor. Remember that the forthcoming Opera browser will be available in two editions: one with a GBA-sized Expansion Pak that juts out of the DS Lite the way GBC games jut out of a GBA SP, and one with a smaller Expansion Pak exclusively for DS Lite.
Andrew @ Apr 1st 2006 10:03PM
Not cool. April Fool's or not. Just mean-spirited.
Go to gamefaqs.com, maybe they'll give you guys some inspiraton.

*rolls eyes at ds fanboy*

Kinda tiring that every story posted on every website has to be bogus just because it's april 1st. I don't mind so much if they're good jokes but this one was sad.
I'll check back later when joystiq gets back to giving information instead of lame jokes.
DragonHunter @ Apr 2nd 2006 7:56AM
They wouldn't be able to make an exclusive DS Lite game at all. Reason? It runs on the exact same OS (if you will for lack of a better word) and hardware as the original DS. The only thing different is the brightness.
c.Lake @ Apr 2nd 2006 7:30PM
You Bastards!!
Logan @ Apr 3rd 2006 1:46AM
Holy crap that scared the snot ouf of me for a few seconds, I have no way of affording a DS lite and have been looking forward to this game since teh beginning of DS....
pinkechidna @ Apr 3rd 2006 12:11PM
Boy, some people cannot take a joke.
Web Browsing Guy @ Jul 22nd 2006 6:24PM
This actually IS possible, (yes, I know it was a filthy trick.). Though the DS Lite has essentially the same hadware, but there still is a way for the game to detect weather it is or is not the lite. It could be from anything from a serial number to an extra hardware component.
pepe @ Sep 16th 2007 11:02PM
dude im from italy so wen we saw it it it waz 3 days before so my cuz went bougth the ds lite for €110 about $129.99 and bought the game for €50 about $60.99 dude you made him waste €160.72 wow lol
