The DS outsold the PSP in the US if only buy a margin. I don't have a link but it was a hot stories for a couple of days in January. This article is superb. I ask PSP fansboys all the time..."Sony had Madden and GTA released on PSP already and Nintendo kick them in the nads with Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and Nintendo Wifi. Madden and GTA were supposed to be the games that put PSP on track. It didn't happen. What's going to happen when Zelda is released for the DS? What about Final Fantasy?"
Nintendo...pimps of the industry...hahahahah

It's interesting to see that the PSPFanboy post about this post (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2006/02/05/could-ds-fanboy-be-right/) have a heap of comments that, err, mostly agree with the comments here.

If only america could come to it's senses and stop liking mindless games. although mindless does pretty much describe the majority of americans. this coming from someone who lives in america mind you.
c.Lake @ Feb 8th 2006 6:26PM
Um... James,
I am an American and I find what you said to be frigging racist. If it wasn't for the Japanese, we wouldn't be here bitching about videogames today. We would be reminiscing about the "good old days" of owning and playing the Atari 2600, Collecovison, and all the other 80’s suck feast of games.
Please stop making the rest of us look bad, by continuing the stereotype that all Americans are self-absorbed, jerks that don't give a rats-ass about the rest of the world. We don't live on this planet alone.

Its not suprising to see the DS outselling the PSP by this much... the Nintendo name has been synonymous with handheld gaming for many years now. Being the owner of a PSP, I definately see an issue with the lack of exciting content... however I am confident that the library will eventually (hopefully?) become stronger.
One thing I notice hardcore Nintendo fans (notice how I avoid the "fanboy" label) doing is complaining about console ports/rehashes on the PSP. I think what many of you are overlooking is the fact that the PSP is meant to bring a console experience to the handheld market. While these systems compete for market share, they go about handheld gaming in completely different ways.
I am VERY worried that what we've seen with the PSP and DS is a preview of what we will see on the next gen consoles. With its rumored media center functionality, as well as ability to play Blu-Ray discs, the PS3 may suffer the same fate of the PSP in that it tries to do to much at once. Sony needs to realize that gaming is what made their Playstation division into the powerhouse it is, and without a great gaming experience on the PSP and PS3 they are dooming themselves. Hopefully their focus will improve and we will continue to see quality games on both Sony and Nintendo systems far into the future.

Man, I can't believe someone actually tried to convince me the PSP was doing better than the DS.
GUEST @ Feb 22nd 2006 5:21AM
Has anyone noticed that the GBA beat the Xbox?
Lynk Former @ Feb 5th 2006 9:56AM
Man, after seeing this I feel ashamed to be a Nintendo fan, I mean Nintendo screwed up big time with the DS, if only it was more like the PSP. Everyone wanted a system with rehashed ports, why won't they ever learn? And look at those Brain Training games! Who's gonna play those crappy "software" titles. We want games dammit, and the ability to watch DV... uh... UMDs!
(lol)
Daniel D @ Feb 5th 2006 10:27AM
okay thats japan what about the US and Europe? im sure the sales figures tell a different tale there although I dont know them personally
Siong @ Feb 5th 2006 10:42AM
i don't see anything wrong with the sales chart. I mean ds is still at the top.
Fortyseven[BTEG] @ Feb 5th 2006 11:23AM
Even more enjoyable than a heavy layer of sarcasm is seeing the replies of those who don't notice it. ;)
Down with gameplay!
James @ Feb 5th 2006 11:33AM
When will you stop showing these pointless numbers from Japan. Last time I checked this site was in aimed at Americans. Some American numbers would be nice, these numbers are a waste of space.
RW99 @ Feb 5th 2006 11:52AM
Ouch James.
Japanese sales directly (but not immediatly) affect the DS in North America. And it's not your space to waste, so enjoy the free DS website ;)
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Feb 5th 2006 12:22PM
James,
Reliable Japanese sales data is released on a weekly basis, whereas the information from other regions doesn't show up nearly as often. If and when those numbers show up, you can be sure that we'll post it (as we have in the past).
Lynk Former @ Feb 5th 2006 1:01PM
Not to mention the fact that Japan is an extremely important region for videogames... why else would Microsoft keep trying to penetrate the Japanese market even though they keep failing :D
@ James: This is a site aimed at Americans? Then what am I, an Australian, doing in here? GASP!! Help me! I'm lost!!
(:D Yes, the sarcasm is strong in here)
Ar?GoW] @ Feb 5th 2006 1:26PM
*sarcasm*Wow, how could Nintendo do this to their fans? I mean the DS is just being owned by the PSP, its quite disturbing. With that new DS Lite coming out their going to just get owned by the PSP. No redesign can save them from total and utter failure*sarcasm*. How could you own the competition Nintendo? What a mean company...
Fortyseven[BTEG] @ Feb 5th 2006 2:08PM
The DS Lite is merely a desperate last ditch effort for Nintendo to cut down on costs of manufacturing the DS.
You see, they simply can't cut and run on the DS, so they're reducing the cost of the device by using even cheaper parts and a reduced component design that only costs them $140 per unit to make as opposed to the $209 per unit it costs now.
It's all being done to avoid litigation from the various publishers that have signed (foolishly) into long term contracts. At this stage in the game, all Nintendo can do is try and turn around this VirtualBoy-esque Titanic of a handheld before they finally hit the big PSP iceberg and Iwata goes sinking into the depths like DiCaprio's character.
Neko Tsukimi @ Feb 5th 2006 4:09PM
I was looking forward to the DS barely getting 300 out the door after seeing only the headline XD You guys are fabulous.
Nmaster @ Feb 5th 2006 4:26PM
Only selling 36,537 (over 150%) more DS's than every other system combined? I expected better from you Nintendo, I'm dissapointed...
designerwhite @ Feb 5th 2006 9:09PM
118, 284 Nintendo (all systems)
57, 341 Sony and Microsoft Combined
(206% more goodness)
and the software sales?
How many games do you guys have for your ds's so far?
I've got 16, and that's not counting the ones I'm sharing with my girlfriend. or advance games...
It's starting to become a problem. Too many high quality games. I have to beat some before march! argh. Stop treating your customers so poorly nintendo, you can't just take all our money in return for amazing game after amazing game! Once all your customers are broke and homeless, who will buy your games then! WHO?!
DeeMan @ Feb 5th 2006 9:54PM
R.E James:
This website is aimed at Americans? Damn. Guess us Australian readers will miss out then.
:|
At least the Japanese numbers remind everyone of an easy comeback to all those who seem to think Nintendo is somehow teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Well written article, anyhow.
Nathan @ Feb 6th 2006 3:35AM
I would just like to say that i sold my PSP on ebay today *please its ok stop applauding*, what a great piece of technology with such a shit list of games.
GO nintendo!!!
anonboy @ Feb 6th 2006 4:02AM
James, they play games in the UK you know.
designerwhite @ Feb 6th 2006 4:17AM
cheers for nathan, prepare to take a mortage for the games.
care @ Feb 6th 2006 10:27AM
#5 because it's a Japanese system and some of us actually like the Japanese taste in games better than the boring ass crap that most of us Americans consider fun. If you don't like it go buy a fucking Ford, sell your Sony TV and hybernate under an American rock some where until you die.
In other words just because we are American doesn't mean we ONLY like American things and only want to hear about what is going on in America. Open up your fucking mind.
care @ Feb 6th 2006 10:35AM
Oh yeah, good point guys. America doesn't own the freaking internet James people from other countries read this site too :P
Now I just hope this is posted on Joystiq.com because a lot of the asshats on that site though that the fact that the DS was sold out had NOTHING to do with the PSP selling more units 2 and 3 weeks ago. What a joke. 2 weeks in a row the DS is back on top and facing even more shortages I hear (revo-europe.com). Those PSP fanboys actually thought the PSP was going to start out selling the DS in japan HAHAHA..
CRP Addict @ Feb 6th 2006 11:23AM
For Europe, the DS outsells the PSP in a proportion of 1.75 to 1
