PS2s survive fairly well, I got a Red Pack(the GT3 pack, way back in the day, V4 I think) and it's merely showing it's age, like every other disc reader over 4 years old.
And kids DROP THE PSP and complain? Sorry, maybe you're a big enough klutz to drop your handhelds repeatedly, but the manufacturer can't be expected to have to fix it when you screw up.
